October 11, 2011

The votes are in and Bermuda has once again been crowned “Best Island in the Caribbean/Atlantic” by readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

Accompanied by 250 guests, NBC Today Show Host Jenna Wolfe presented the award to the Minister of Business Development and Tourism Patrice Minors at the publication’s annual Readers Choice Awards Ceremony in New York City yesterday [Oct.10].

Minister Minors Conde Nast

Minister Minors said, “We are honoured that Bermuda was selected by Condé Nast Traveler readers as the number one travel destination among all of the Atlantic and Caribbean islands. It is a privilege to be ranked so favourably by the magazine’s globetrotting audience and also a testament to the commitment of service that our Island offers visitors every season.”

Congratulating Bermuda, Ms. Wolfe spoke warmly about the destination’s win and her love for the Island.  Also in attendance was Chris Noth of “Law and Order” and “The Good Wife,” as well as actress Angela Bassett, NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and comedian Stephen Colbert, who recently sailed to Bermuda.

  1. Jus' Askin' says:

This is really good news ;-)

  2. Sandgrownan says:

    a) Not Caribbean
    b) Best for what exactly?

    Public transportation?
The warm welcome at the airport?
    Overpriced restaurants and hotels?

Is this one of those awards where you “buy” it?

    • What gives with you says:

Do you ever have anything good to say?

You are just as big a problem as everything your talk about….

      • Sandgrownan says:

Plenty, but this award has no credibility. Unless you like sunshine being blown up your ass.

      • Bermuda is truely another world....(SMDH). says:

OMG…Thank you for saying. I was just thinking that about ‘it’. Damn shame just spews negativity. If you hate the island and her people so much just do us all a favour and leave. I am not one to critize another blogger but ‘it’ is just tested my last nerve.

    • Let's Think About This... says:

DO you have to be so negative? Given the fact that this country is having social, transport, and governmental issues, I think it’s pretty significant we got the award. Be proud of your country for once, and stop being a Debbie Downer! And yes, we may not be geographically Caribbean, but we are definitely culturally part of that group. Where have you been?

Well done, Bermuda! We now have a standard to live up to. Let’s fix this already.

    • Tru Bermudan says:

Exactly. For once we agree on something.

Bermuda is nowhere near the Carribbean.

The hateful terrible spiteful bad attitude and work ethic, or lack there of, is horrendous.

      Dockyard transportation is a joke.

      Cruise Ship Passengers harassed.

Over priced food that is second rate and served by someone who cares more about their next blackberry message than the restaurant they work in or the daily specials.

Angry people working the immigration desks – the first point of contact for the tourists.

      Angry taxi drivers.

Terribly rude and offensive bus drivers who care more about getting their “good afternoon” than they do about their passengers.

And with the exception of a few: most hotels charge 1st class prices for 3rd world service.

A union that ruined tourism in the 70′s and 80′s still continuing their trend of ruining Bermudas tourist trade as evidenced this summer by their tantrum like bus strike.

Bermuda has a long way to go before we truly deserve and earn an award like the one so undeservedly bestowed on us two years in a row.

Want to turn tourism around? Start by dismantling the BIU and stop harrassing cruise ship passengers.

      • True Bermudian says:

Another thing: when those Conde Nast people come to Bermuda everyone knows they are coming at the places they are staying at. They are sheltered and given the best of the best service by the people the hotels know are the best.
They get the best taxis with the best drivers and they stay at the best hotels in the best rooms serviced by the best staff.

They are pampered and treated with the utmost care and respect.

They get a completely different experience than your average tourist coming to Bermuda.

        • LaVerne Furbert says:

The votes are in and Bermuda has once again been crowned “Best Island in the Caribbean/Atlantic” by readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine.

I guess you didn’t see where it said the vote was by the readers of the magazine, not the “Conde Nast people”.

          • LOL (original) says:

LaVerne is right this time credit where credit is due.

            LOL

          • True Bermudian says:

Thank you for pointing that out LaVerne.

You still can’t test the other list though…

    • smh says:

Please SHUT UP. MY country won an award. Congratulate us, or don’t say anything.

#No National Pride. A damn shame.

  3. Clap yourself says:

See the sky is not falling as Cannonier, Dunkley, Richards et al in OBA would have you believe. We have to believe in ourselves and go out an seek business and promote Bermuda and most of all work hard. Good Job to all that made this happen and I’m not talking ’bout the powers that be. I’m talking about us Bermudians here in Bermuda making it a better place for us, our children, our guest workers and visitors. Great Bermudian Day to ALL

  4. Warrior Queen says:

You guys make me holler you just have to hate. If Bermuda was not worthy of the award I am sure they would not have presented it to Minister Minors. Obviously she is also doing something right that Bermudians REFUSE to acknowledge.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BERMUDIANS THAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE.

    • star man says:

What is it exactly that Minister Minors is doing right for Tourism that Bermudians REFUSE to acknowledge? She just goes with the flow, as far as I am concerned, and doesn’t even have a PLAN yet. Neither did Ewart. You can’t move ahead if you don’t have a Plan. Unless, of course, you do it ‘by the seat of your pants,’ which is what I believe she does. Anyway, she’ll soon be gone. Then we can get SERIOUS about turning Tourism around!

      • RN says:

Your negativity along with the rest of your friends will cause the OBA a victory….

        • I'm soooo scared .. says:

Cut the childish threats .. you lot would never vote for anyone but the plp anyway .. Regardless of what the critics (justifiably) say.
The criticism will continue and your vote will not change anyway.

  5. Winnie says:

This is good news, which is always welcome, however where are the “stopover bodies”. We can jump and sing all we want the fact still remains our hospitailty product is suffering. We have less and less rooms and we can’t fill them. Bermuda have been getting accolades over the years from this or that magazine, we now need to find a way to attract stop over visitors to our shores. Just can never understand why everything have to be in black or white or politicised, smh.

  6. George says:

Well done but it has to be said – the numbers speak for themselves when it comes to the continual steady decline of tourism in Bermuda! So lets not get too up on ourselves!

Conde Naste has a very selective and small readership when it comes to travel magazines so we need to put things into perspective.

A quick comparison of the tourism numbers between Bermuda and the rest of the Caribbean Islands will serve as a good reality check!

  7. PawPaw says:

Hear Hear George..I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Let’s look at the facts please…..I just wonder how much the PLP paid Conde Nast..getting so close to an election…..

    • Gangalee says:

Toursim numbers have been on the steady decline (no doy) and we should always look to improve our product, but how can you make such an allegation?

Conde Nast is a worldwide publications company that puts out other magazines such as The New Yorker, Vogue, GQ, Architectual Digest, Golf Digest and many many other reputable magazines. This is not a fly-by night publication by any steretch. Go look at the wiki….

Yes, it is a selective magazine that concentrates on high-end hotels and destinations but isnt that exactly what our tourist product has been focused on for the past decade and a half.

    • mixitup says:

What a total moronic idiot you are! So if the PLP paid for this award, then they paid for it when they were in opposition also, because Bermuda has been the number one ranked Island for the past 15 out of 16 times!

  8. Hard to believe says:

They might want to re-count the voting process….Best Caribbean island…good news, but who did we have to pay to bistow that honour. Im not putting Bermuda down in anyway, but this is a little hard to believe. I not even taking in the murders, the shottings and the robberies….im taking in the little hospitality factor, transporation, kindness when asking for directions and cost factor. I would love to know who came 2nd, 3rd and honourable mention.

  9. RN says:

Can you people just accept good news, even if it is just for a moment.

I over heard a tourist stating to a group of woman in a restaurant, how they love Bermuda, it’s people, it’s beauty and so on….the ladies went on a tirade, about any and everything negative about the country.

    terrible right..

you all are doing the same thing.

  10. jumpup says:

advertising ploy, these travel mags can’t write the same thing all the time so they spread the awards out. Maybe Govt should buy a few million of the great conde nast mag’s and mail them out all over the world, …maybe then someone will actually read the article! Who cares!!!

  11. Kim Smith says:

If all you’re after is to ‘feel good’ then you’re nothing more than a cheap date!

Why is it unreasonable to point out that to vote Bermuda as the best island in the Caribbean makes one wonder if they are confusing us with the Bahamas (as many Americans do). Bermuda is not in the Caribbean and so this award is bogus.

Further, to ask for clarification on the measures that were used is anything but negative. If the award wasn’t bogus, it would give us a clear sense of what we are doing right, so that we can examine it and apply the formula in other areas.

Come on, Bermuda, don’t be afraid to grow up and confront our weaknesses, we will be better for it.

  12. PawPaw says:

Everyone is aware of Conde Nast’s reputation, but let’s face it..Bermuda’s tourism numbers have been on the decline for several years. The only people who seem to love Bermuda are the old broken down relics from the US and the UK. Perhaps the latter because it is still a colony. There is nothing to do in Bermuda! The nightlife does not exist, unless you want to listen to a the sounds of overweight entertainers who have been around since the dinosaurs, the restaurants are overpriced and not consistent…and the service is pathetic..the only thing left are the beaches and the golf courses…and that is fine for those who want to relax. but for those who want to party..Bermuda needs a 5 star Monte Carlo style casino and entertainment brought in from overseas.
This would provide jobs for Bermudians and the tourism industry would be thriving….and you can also throw in an escort service where the girls come in on six month permits, like they do in Panama!! LOL
At this point and time, Bermuda is a tired and worn out destination. Like a vending machine that takes your $$$$ and you receive nothing in return!!

  13. CollegeGirl says:

You know what Bermudians fail to realize?? We’re a WHOLE lot nicer than you guys think. Yes things have declined a lot according to our standards but the world outside of Bermuda isn’t really pretty. When we think of places like the States where people don’t speak and the generosity isn’t a given, places in the Caribbean where its poor and violence is waaay higher than it is at home. We have more of a safe little nugget of paradise than you think. So I can see why we were voted as number one. That doesn’t mean we don’t have places to improve on and not to say we totally deserve it too. Just try not to be so negative about.

    • Sandgrownan says:

No, this is the problem. Bermudians believe their own press, they believe their sh*t don’t stink, they believe they are the friendliest people in the world.

We so lacking in self awareness it simply isn’t funny.

      • mixitup says:

You must not be a traveler. I recently visited Tobago, I took the ferry from Trinidad. The locals shoved the visitors out of the way to board, and said “These Tourist need to let the locals on first” so let me tell you, Bermudians are still some of the more welcoming people around, trust me.

        • Can't Take It Anymore says:

Exactly!!! From one traveler to another, and Im talking the whole Carribean, the US, England, France, Germany, Australia, Dubai and China, Bermudians are the most friendliest people on this planet!! To say otherwise means you have not been to a great many of places and still ive in that lil thing called a bubble..

          • sandgrownan says:

            You are joking?
Bus drivers? Good morning with a sneer? bwwaahahahaha

  14. PawPaw says:

Sorry CollegeGirl…pleaseplease broaden your horizons..there are other destinations other than the US and the Caribbean. Once you begin to travel WORLDWIDE, then you would be able to appreciate my comments. not being negative, just being truthful!!!

    • RN says:

I am a world traveler and every where I go, I appreciate the beauty of Bermuda more and more..you need to get out of your narrow minded thinking and see Bermuda…for it’s finest not it’s worst….every country has it’s worst. And every country I have visited their worst is unimaginable. so whiles there is always room for improvement we are a great little island. doing great thing.

  15. PawPaw says:

    Thank you Sandgrownan…
Bermuda isanother world..several hundred miles at sea..adnthe way the people greet you is PATHETIC and SURLY…
To sail on the harbor and see the multiclored sand, to dodge a bullet in Hamilton Parish and see your life flash before your eyes..yes folks Bermuda is indeed another world…LOL

  16. Curious George says:

I think the win is great, but it does seem a little fishy to me and quite possibly is an award that we purchased. Who knows? As a well travelled Bermudian (and no, not just the quarterly trips to the east coast of the US to shop, that doesn’t count) I can admit that:

    1. I’ve seen prettier beaches and most of them have proper consessions and boardwalks and offer much more to do at a much more reasonable cost.

    2. Have met way friendlier people on other islands that are welcoming and genuine. Not people that tell you ‘Good morning’ then mumble about you under their breath as I see and experience EVEN AS A BERMUDIAN from my own people.

    3. Have been exposed to a world of opportunity, options, choice and amazing customer service, fair cost of goods and services.

    Wow, I could go on…

  17. Meghan says:

I’m a long time visitor to the island, and while I understand that these sort of “Best Of” lists are hardly scientific polls, I don’t see why anyone would choose to harp on the negative here. This is getting Bermuda’s name out there, which it desperately needs, and the magazine’s audience is significant for a couple reasons. I did some quick research: 1. Traveler readership is around 3.5 million people worldwide; 2. Readers’ median household income is 6 figures (read: can afford Bermuda). This doesn’t even take into account the number of people who will read about this honor online — and there will be TV segments about it, too, like the Today Show, Regis & Kelly, etc. Even if BDA bought this honor from Conde Nast, WHO CARES? Why are we complaining about large-scale promotion to millions of people? Would you rather hide Bermuda and slip further into economic decline? Anyway you slice it, this seems like a good thing to me!

  18. Can't Take It Anymore says:

According the OBA and its followers, Bermuda is going down the tubes, but the magazine mentioned above says that we are best in the Carribean/Atlantic in tourist destination. Hmmmmmmmmmm, I smell a rat somewhere!! And just to clarify, the readers of that magazine voted Bermuda as the favorite place, so there could not have been a buy in as the conspiracy theorists would have us believe.

Come on nay sayers, where are you??!! I would really like to read how you say this is all propoganda and that the island is still flowing downstream. And how no one wants to come here.

    • LOL (original) says:

One thing it does point to is that gaming is not required as we don’t have it and yet we are “the best in the Caribbean/Atlantic”. Other ideas that have been floated are water parks, marine tourism infact why does Bermuda College not go into a partnership with Bios or BUEI on marine biology? ( they might I don’t know for sure just an idea from the hip). Summer Fest is another great idea that just needs a little more support from a security view point. Summer is our greatest season as people come for the beauty and beaches. Just some thoughts.

      LOL

    • Sandgrownan says:

Given the reduction in hotel rooms, the declining tourism arrivals both on ships and by air (business travellers don’t count Dr. Brown) I wold say tourism, as a pillar of the economy, is on a downward spiral.

Given that we have made ourselves as unwelcoming as possible for the other crumbling pillar of our economy, we are in trouble.

This “award” while nice and warming needs to treated with a certain amount of cynicism and without rose tinted glasses.

      It means nothing.

      • Can't Take It Anymore says:

No matter what, good news is bad news right? No matter what ray of hope comes through you and others always seem to want to cover it up and say there will never be any sunshine on this lil island. Like it or not, your comments are starting to become part of the problem. Never anything positive to say.
Did you know that magazine caters to over 3 million people worldwide?? Come on man, for once say something positive. THIS IS GOOD NEWS!!
We have reached the low and are starting to move upwards, don’t try to keep us down in the mud.

        • sandgrownan says:

All I did was merely point out the dichotomy between what the “award” indicates and the reality of Bermuda.

          • Bermuda Pride says:

That ‘AWARD’ you are talking about is an OPINION, not fact. Stop trying to influence people to beleive that crap.
            Well done Bermuda.

    • cheeter says:

REALLY? you’re going to take this one publication as evidence to back up your feeble claims? how about checking some real hard numbers like crime statistics, unemployment, declining visitors numbers, rising cost of living, or the fact that, um, gee, i dont know, there’s shootings in BROAD DAYLIGHT? compare all those numbers to the numbers 15 – 20 years ago. Can you do that? Can you honestly say things are better in Bermuda?

WAKE. UP. its people like you who believe anything mommy and daddy tells them that perpetuate our problems here. you believe everything is peachy and therefore do nothing to solve the problems we face.

This little piece of “good news” may be welcome, it may not have been bought. But it doesnt solve any of our problems.

      again, please, WAKE UP.

  19. PawPaw says:

What a laugh..Trinidad and Tobago..no right thinking people visit that little crummy little island..with it’s AIDS and crime rates soaring through the hemisphere..we are talking WORLDWIDE travel..the EUROPE< ASIA, AFRICA, etc..not some scruffy little curry and roti eating island with chicken thieves!! LOL

    • Let's Think About This... says:

Wow someone sounds a bit discriminatory there. Aren’t you all about positivity?

  20. LaVerne Furbert says:

“Cress Welsing states that a system is practiced by the global white minority, on both conscious and unconscious levels, to ensure their genetic survival by any means necessary. According to Cress Welsing, this system attacks people of color, particularly people of African descent, in the nine major areas of people’s activity: economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex and war.[2] Cress Welsing believes that it is imperative that people of color, especially people of African descent, understand how the system of white supremacy works in order to dismantle it and bring true justice to planet Earth”

Seems to me Dr. Cress used Bermuda as a casse study.

    • Sandgrownan says:

Seems to me that you’re an idiot.

      • Can't Take It Anymore says:

Come on dude, I normally respect yoru opinion because they have depth and substance to them, now you just sound like everyone else. Don’t know how to express yourself verbally so you resort to name calling.

        • sandgrownan says:

You are correct, however, sometimes one really needs to call it as it is. LF quoting someone as discredited as Cress is hysterical.

          • Johnny says:

Who is he discredited by, oh white people.

            • sandgrownan says:

IF you think this is credible..

““On both St. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, the white male gives gifts of chocolate candy with nuts…. If his sweetheart ingests “chocolate with nuts”, the white male can fantasize that he is genetically equal to the Black male…. Is it not also curious that when white males are young and vigorous, they attempt to master the large brown balls, but as they become older and wiser, they psychologically resign themselves to their inability to master the large brown balls? Their focus then shifts masochistically to hitting the tiny white golf balls in disgust and resignation — in full final realization of white genetic recessiveness.”

…you are as stupid as Laverne.

        • Johnny says:

When the truth hurts people normally react that way.

          • sandgrownan says:

bbwwahawahaa…..the truth according to Laverne and Cress. Excellent.

        • Localoverseas says:

Wow..still can’t believe people pull the racisim card.

    • green eggs and ham says:

I think you meant Dr. Seuss!

      • Can't Take It Anymore says:

        No she meant Dr. Cress.

        • cheeter says:

Dr Cress also stated that “white people are the genetically defective descendants of albino mutants”.

Can either you or Laverne explain this to me in a way that makes sense?

    • Heading Home says:

      L.Ferbert(and I mean the Nut)
I can’t believe what i just read…what a fractious and caustic statement for a so-called intelligent person to make.
You are truely a joke and embarassment to your country.
Please spend some time in reflection and solitary confinment for the sake of intelligent people on this site.
      Please give us a break.

    • cheeter says:

Dont you have a country to rob or a coffer to steal from or a friend without any relevant experience to give a high ranking job to?

Dr. Cress also believes that “white people are the genetically defective descendants of albino mutants”

Shes a racist. like you. Heres another quote from that looney:

“On both St. Their focus then shifts masochistically to hitting the tiny white golf balls in disgust and resignation — in full final realization of white genetic recessiveness.”

this is laughable stuff, really. Really?

  21. PawPaw says:

    Thank you Laverne Furbert.
Now please throw away your black and white TV and purchase a colour TV.

  22. Let's Think About This... says:

Like someone said, why can’t you be happy that no matter how it may have been achieved, Bermuda got positive publicity in a magazine that is read around the world? We aren’t making CNN for all our shootings, not on The Weather Channel for a hurricane, not the subject of tax losses in the states. We are seen in a positive light for once! Damn people won’t be happy until you bring the whole country to your miserable state, and even then you’ll still complain about how “crappy” Bermuda is.

Btw, no one wants to come partially due to the fact the locals can’t say anything positive about Bermuda. I’m not asking you to cover up the bad. But no other country blasts their problems all over, then complains about the low visitor numbers. Say, “Yes, my country has the best beautiful beaches in the world.” Come on, say it with me:”Yes (pause) my country…” There you go!

  23. LaVerne Furbert says:

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Dr. Cress’ work is as relevant today as it was when she first published.

  24. Don't make me laugh says:

Laverne Furbert what point are you trying to make exactly? Or are you still trying to show us all how ignorant you are on a daily basis.

    • Can't Take It Anymore says:

LAverne, these people have never read, so they have no idea what you are talking about. For those of us that do read know that these people are making fools of themselves in a verbal fashion. Just think themselves lucky that Bernews does not require people to post their actual names with their posts, becasue then we would know who they are.

      • And what? says:

What exactly would you do if you knew anyways?

      • LOL (original) says:

Or IQ levels as if you read and interpreted everything Dr. Cress said you would realize she destroys her own definition of racism with her thought that whites are descendants of mutants that were kicked out of Africa for this difference. If this holds even an once of truth then how can racism only encompass a white way of thinking if it was as she thinks black Africans kicking them out of the country effectively stripping them of everything talk about keeping them out of society and disadvantaged.

        LOL

  25. Tired of nonsense says:

    Sen. Furbert,

Thanks for the laugh of the day. Here are some “interesting theories” from Crss Welsing:

According to Welsing, various cultural practices express white people’s sense of their own inferiority:

On both St. Their focus then shifts masochistically to hitting the tiny white golf balls in disgust and resignation — in full final realization of white genetic recessiveness.[6]

    and this little gem here:

Welsing further contends that chauvinism of white males is rooted in envy, “because Black is always genetically dominant to white”:

…I have said all of the above to state that, yes, there is envy in the white supremacy culture, but it began with the white male’s envy of the genetic power residing in the Black male’s testicles and phallus. Perhaps there was also envy of the comparatively longer length of the Black phallus. The sense of his relative genetic weakness and inferiority compared to Black males (because Black is always genetically dominant to white) caused the white male to attempt to project “inferiority” on white females as well.[7]

That woman is just a little more, um, extreme than you!

    • Tired of nonsense says:

And yes she can be labelled a racist as she believes that the black is always genetically dominant/superior to whites.

Not too sure why yuo think fighting one form of racism with another form of racism.

But hey that’s just me and and in all honesty it is probably my inherent white supremacy, coupled with my envy of the black male genitlia that has led me to even dare question your theories on any subject.

Gotta go now and measure. I think it has grown and I want to play with little white balls as well!!!

  26. PawPaw says:

Precisely. Can’t she use her own words instead of constantly quoting words from someone else to make herself sound so intelligent and intellectual.
Yes, the more things cahnge, the more SHE stays the same.

  27. Rumandcoke says:

Thanks Conde Nast. Nice to see you appreciated
all our recent advertising spend in your magazine.

  28. LaVerne Furbert says:

I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar that the majority of the negative comments written above have been written by a a certain demographic of our community. However, as I continue to say, few, if any, have the courage of their convictions.

Conde Nast lauds Bermuda, and all you can do is criticise. It is my understanding that both of David Dodwell’s properties (The Reefs in Bermuda and Nesbitt Plantation in Nevis) also received plaudits from the readers of the magazine. Did Mr. Dodwell pay them to do so? Or were the readers lying as they did about Bermuda?

As far as the comments from people such as Sangrownan and others, I expected as much. It’s real easy to post as you do. That’s why there are most “bloggers” on Bernews than the Royal Gazette. You can all hide under your rock of anonymity.

But, hey, in Bermuda we have freedom of speech.

    • sandgrownan says:

Ah, au contraire my delusional damsel. I do have the courage of my convictions, but you have been proven to be a vile, vindictive individual who would exercise their influence to cause “bother”. I have no problem with this, but I choose to remain anonymous in order to protect family.

Why should they be subject your nasty behaviour because of my opinions?

      • soon leavin' says:

        Well spoken Sand.
For me this was meant to be a fun blog where we can read, laugh and often comment on current issues. But when a disgrace to the Bermudian political system such as Ms.Furbert places her vile and racists words here it has me shaking my head in disgust. She actually believes this is a forum for her negative and stupid remarks. Please go away Ms.Furbert.

        • RN says:

and you are more vile and nasty, hurry up and leave….My prays are that you are not a Bermudian and at some point you won’t have a choice, won’t want you bumping into any of our tourist…..you are more of an embarrassment then Ms. Furbert will ever be. at-least she bring solid information to the table. whether ones agrees with it or not.. you just project hate.

          • RN says:

and take your friends with you….

          • LOL (original) says:

Solid information that she is racist beyond belief but wait I thought she and those she reps. were supposed to be better than us?? Please the irony of the haters is that they are the ones hating the most and at best sounds to me that someone other than white people believe in their superiority to the point of whishing for supremacy.

LOL seems whites and blacks who think like this will be in a dead lock forever while the rest of us have fun and accomplish our goals. Looks like all this teaching history again and again is producing more circular thinking than progressive thinking. What can be said about one can to easily be turned on the other. Thats the irony of the human condition some just can’t get past they perspective.

            • LOL (original) says:

Looking back at some of the pro black comments and even some of the pro white comments on here I have to say people making them are sounding more and more like “Charles Manson types, Tea partiers, kkk types” by the day. I have a feeling that many posters on here have multible names so thats still says those that think like this are in the minority of the country. However if you look at the content of the comments on here generally you have attacks on a person which others believe is race based based on who they perceive the victim to be and then comments with the basis that all of a race are some way. Just and interesting observation that shows historical perceptions are being placed, forced , pushed on the younger generation much like a families fueding over past injustises and at this point there is no real progressive thought happening just unbrideled contempt for the other.

So when will this lead to what is good for the whole country? PLP & OBA supporters any answers……

LOL The wises man in the world freely admitted that he knew nothing and that the days of are lives are like sand slipping from our finger tips. Remeber to laugh a little and together as much as yo can as it heals the soul.

              • LOL (original) says:

sorry for the gramtical errors hit send to quick. Read the message and think about it.

                LOL

  29. LaVerne Furbert says:

“Ah, au contraire my delusional damsel. I do have the courage of my convictions”.

Prove it!! “Courage (also bravery, boldness, fearlessness, mettle, fortitude, or intrepidity) is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, in the face of physical pain, hardship, death, or threat of death, while “moral courage” is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, scandal, or discouragement.”

    • sandgrownan says:

Not a hope with you. It’s not me I’m protecting. Remember, I certainly do you have previous form for this sort of behaviour.

    • LOL (original) says:

Easy for you your the magority………

      LOL

  30. White Christ says:

Since when is Bermuda a Caribbean Island? Dear fellow Bermudians, if you want to remain the “best” then stop comparing ourselves to the Caribbean or worse, presenting us as Caribbean when we are not in so many ways from geographically to culturally etc. Best in the Caribbean is NOT good enough because we should be continuing to compete on a GLOBAL scale. So all of you who may think my comment is inappropriate remember this…..you are only as great as the standards you compare yourself to.

  31. confused says:

just one question, the last time i looked at the map there was us in the water and some more water next to that water… if you don’t want to be classified as Caribbean then who will we compete with for excellence? the water?! give me a break.

  32. Johnny says:

LMAO!! All the OBA idiots make me laugh. Bermuda is not in the Caribbean, hahaha. Just goes to show that they are not really for Bermuda, just tryin to get in power so they can screw us. Grow up and recognize when to congratulate someone, and stop being so spiteful. You all sound like babies. Wanhhh, wanhh, cryin because Our government won an award, and trying to discredit it. At least the people of Bermuda can see how fake you really are. OBA, oh ya so funny.

    • sandgrownan says:

Oh..the PLP won the award did it? I thought it was Bermuda, silly me.

As said earlier, all that is being pointed out is the dichotomy between a dubious award and the reality of Bermuda.

  33. Raymond Russell Jr says:

I would ask the people to please take another look at the headline.

It says Best Island in the Caribbean/Atlantic. Pretty sure we are still in the Atlantic.

I know you all just want to bitch about everything Bermuda but please read.

1 more thing, I promise you Miss LaVerne is no racist, but i am not afraid to make my dilike and distrust of the white man known. Now you know someone whom you can freely call racist.

    name and all

    • sandgrownan says:

So you’re a racist too?…..”dislike and distrust of the white man” ?

      Really?

  34. BERMUDACEDAR says:

SANDGROWNAN you are a discrace to our country you are racist to your own country get a life.

  35. Don't make me laugh says:

Laverne to think that anyone that disagrees with you or doesn’t like what you have to say is a member of the OBA, UBP or white just shows hwo ignorant you are. I am neither OBA, UBP, PLP or “white” and I’ve heard the opinions of plenty of PLP voters and blacks in general that also think your ignorant. Do PLP a favour and stop spewing your garbage. Your a bitter miserable women and all you spread is negativity. All these survey’s that seem to be getting done maybe a survey should be done to see what percentage of people actually think what you have to say is prodcutive or good for this Country. I’ll bet my life on it your numbers would be low just like your low standings with 8 votes the other night.

  36. Bermyman says:

What are we discussing here? White Supremacy? Or the Award?? In short Bermuda has won this award 15 out of 16 times as someone has said above. That said, it is very good news that we retain this award for another year but in reality it is not to the credit of Bermuda Tourism or the government, our tourism product has obviously declined and we have several derelict hotel sites that if they were not would provide many jobs. That is the reality, it does not mean the economy is turning around, it does not mean that tourism has turned around. If you want proof of that then ask the many people unemployed currently. We need to convince hoteliers to invest in our Island with new hotels on the old sites. Why has that not happened to date under the present government?

  37. Mike D says:

To me these comments on both sides of the fence are very upsetting. I have grown up on this island and I would like to stay here and grow with this country. Why do we have people reiterating very divisive comments on this blog? What is the motivation? If you truly dislike the white man I cannot condemn you but I can ask why? I promise you Raymond of all the white people that I know there is not one that is out to get anyone based on color. Laverne, I am not sure what motivates you to write this stuff but please for the sake of all of us please just stop. I am young (28) and I do not wish to see my country turn into a spiteful nasty community. I would hope that those writing above me on this blog are of the older generation and will soon be too old to continue to fill those less knowledgable with the prefered form of propaganda. We, the young people, can then move forward together as that is how we were brought up……. TOGETHER! To all those prodigious people on both sides of the fence…… give it up you are a small minority and we will eventually weed you out, and in the end you will be remembered in the same way that you have presented yourself.

  38. Mike D says:

excuse me sorry i meant prejudiced

  39. JD says:

Right on Mike D. Thankfully our generation seems to be a bit more enlightened when it comes to these things. I really pity some members of the older generation who are really still hung up with these things, carrying around all that bitterness is just sad.

I must say though I did enjoy those quotes by Dr Cress, that’s some seriously funny stuff. The Snickers bar has just taken on a whole new meaning, and I better quit smoking those white cigarettes while I’m at it, I can imagine the Freudian theory behind that one.

On the topic of this piece, judge the Conde Nast award as you wish. However, I would hope that the people of Bermuda judge the success of tourism in Bermuda by the amount of money and jobs that this sector generates for the economy, not the amount of magazine awards we receive.

Come on people can we all just grow up a bit please.

    • kiskadee says:

As a member of the older generation I agree with all that JD says.

  40. True Bermudian says:

    Here’s the harsh reality:

For a couple of generations now black people in Bermuda have been taught to hate whitey. They’ve been taught that hate is okay and it is justified because whitey is the enemy. The devil.

Today it’s not only the norm and commonplace for open hostility towards whites, it’s almost expected amongst the black peer group – and blacks offer every reason, except logic and sanity, to excuse their hateful behavior.

That backward mentality is at odds with the tourism sector.

After all: if I’ve been taught to hate whitey and eff whitey by any means necessary, then why in the world would I want to go wait or serve some white devil in a restaurant or hotel?!

    Aren’t white people the problem?

Remember all u devil whites: “you don’t get the job unless you look like me”.

Last election saw dr brown say “this country owes black people.”
Yet black people have run Bermuda for 13 years now. So who owes who?!

And as far as I know all the oil is in the middle east so who really has the power and the grip around the worlds throat at this point anyway? Certainly not these doe eyed white devils.

LaVerne and others of her ilk like rolfe still point the finger at whitey for their problems. But they have done little to find solutions to Bermudas real problems: a lot which have been created by them and the pawned off as whiteys fault.

Keep spouting rhetoric by your false professors LaVerne. The rest of us free thinkers have a right to exist without your ignorance.

    • RN says:

True Bermudian: I know History is His Story, and with that been said, I don’t know where to received your teaching about Bermuda and our history from but it is so way of base in accordance with my history.

Black Bermudian of yesterday, where taught to shout up and do as you are told, take what you get and don’t complain, you have no rights and are not entitled to any. today’s Black Bermudian are not settling for the same faith of there fore fathers, the vast majority are still doing whats needed to be done, to survive, but they are far more vocal, don’t mix up Bermuda’s worst Blacks with the majority of Black Bermudians.

Also note some of the folks that suffered through segregation and discrimination in Bermuda are still living. Bermuda was desegregated in the a mere 40-50 years ago and discrimination still runs ramped today, although not openly.

Sometimes I wonder which was worst the master/employer, that chased you from his door and told straight to you face I don’t hire Blacks, or the ones of today that hire you but pay less than whites, or the ones that simply just don’t hire you leaving you to wonder why. again not sure which is worst.

      • LOL (original) says:

Looks like the same history to me just a different perspective.

        LOL

        • JD says:

“Discrimination still runs ramped today”. Man that’s funny.

Yeah that rampant discrimination is so obvious, you only have to look at the last five premiers, the CEO of the bank, and the managing partners of Applebys and PWC, discrimination is clearly ramping amok.

Aww, I feel a bit sad for RN and his folksy racism actually, I just want to pat him on the head and say everything is going to be ok.

    • Tired of nonsense says:

      Agreed.

My, myself, as a whiteboy have experienced far more verbal and physical racism in my life on this rock then any black person my age, or younger, will ever experience.

If you don’t believe me, then name (young black Bermudians) one time that you have been booted or chased out of certain establishments and/or areas simply because of the color of your skin. Sh*t I had even had to transfer public schools back in the day as I was harassed everyday by a bunch of 6-10 year olds because I was the only white boy in class.

      • RN says:

don’t confuse being bullied by a few black children…….show me a law that denied whites the rights to work, to be educated and to fair pay, housing, and the Banking Institution ….and don’t bring the Portuguese history, remember they where migrated to Bermuda to undermine the blacks … and when the whites needed them they declared the Portuguese white and gave them all the privileges of the white man, whiles still denying black that right.

        • Tired of nonsense says:

If you read my post you would have noticed I stated that no black Bermudians of my generation.

Never did I say no black Bermudian in the history of Bermuda.

And the fact that you label me getting chased out of establishments/areas, berated publicly and racially harassed to the point of having to move schools nothing but being “bullied” is quite interesting in and of itself.

Imagine if a bunch of white kids, nowadays, did such to a black person in Bermuda. I doubt very much you will label as simply being bullied by a bunch of white people.

          • RN says:

We have some 50 year old persons.. running around here calling themselves young.
at 35 you are middle age..since life expectancy is 75. I don’t know your age.
But what happened to you is horrible and no human being should have to endure what you went through. but do you really equate that to institutionalize racism. Racism imposed by the government. How many generation should pass, til the effects wear off. 1 2 3 generations. I don’t know.

I don’t hate or dislike white people, to know ones history does not make you a racist or hater..

I am sorry for what happened to you, it’s shameful.

            • Tired of nonsense says:

Well technically middle age would be 38.5 years!

And I can confidently, and honestly state, that I am yet to turn 30!

Thanks for your perspective via your other points as well.

    • RN says:

we are not taught to hate…some of us where taught our history, as painful as it was, so that history does not repeat it’s self.. ,do you tell the Jew that speak of the holocaust to forget about it…they have a whole month of remembrance.

  41. Y-Gurl says:

No crime or corruption here , I guess Bermuda looks good when compared to where I wonder

  42. mfw bermudians says:

I lol at all the people complaining that we’re not even apart of the Caribbean. Although the title of the article is misleading, if some of you took the time to read the very next line, it clearly states “in the Caribbean/Atlantic” which I’m sure at least some of us can understand that this is a category that Bermuda can (and does) fall under.

  43. Underwriter says:

patrice and the other ladies in blue look hot – the one in full black aint saying nothing

vote Patrice, cause she looks tasty!

  44. LaVerne Furbert says:

“David Dodwell, who earlier this year was named Hotelier of the Year by the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association, took top honours for both of his resorts at the recent star-studded Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards ceremony in New York City.

The Reefs in Bermuda was recognized as the #1 resort in the Atlantic for the third consecutive year. And for the first time, Nisbet Plantation Beach Club on Nevis was named the #1 resort in the Caribbean [the resort had held the #3 spot for the past two years].

This is the second #1 award for Nisbet Plantation Beach Club this year. In July, Nisbet Plantation was named the top resort in the Caribbean for the second year in a row by the readers of Travel + Leisure.”

Amazing!! Not one comment on this which was published on Bernews on October 13, 2011.

    • LOL (original) says:

What’s your point that it was David’s work that own this award for Bermuda and not the MoT……

      LOL

      • MinorMatters says:

The point is that the PLP Rookie Tourism Minister should confer with Mr. Dodwell on how to do the job right.

    • Tired of nonsense says:

Amazing not one comment from you on the fleecing of the tax payer by Mr.Curtis?

      Why is that?

You wonder why people label you the great defender? Well that would be because it is quite evident that you will defend your party at the expense of Bermuda herself.

You can’t complain about such labels when you live up to them everyday.

  45. bermyshotta says:

BERMY DIDN’T PURCHASE NUTTIN….DIS AWARD IS DONE BY VOLUNTARY VOTES. A blessin dat we won but still dun undastand it considerin sum a di places have pure stuff to offer den us.

  46. LaVerne Furbert says:

LOL, I wouldn’t expect you to get the point. You don’t appear to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. But when you do get my point, let me know.

    • LOL (original) says:

All I have to say is 8 votes. I’m the sharpener.

      LOL

  47. James says:

…the nicest people money can buy.
