Channel Study Town Hall Meetings

October 5, 2011

The Ministry of Transport will be conducting a series of Town Hall meetings to solicit input from the public on the recently completed Study of Bermuda’s Shipping Channels. The purpose of the report was to examine options for safe transport of the cruise ships that dominate today’s cruise ship market.

The Study examined improvements that may be required to bring in larger ships along the North Channel, into Hamilton Harbour, and through Town Cut to St. George’s.

Terry Lister, Minister of Transport said: “There is little doubt that the loss of the smaller cruise ships has impacted the economy of St. George’s and Hamilton. The purpose of the Town Hall meetings is to get input from the public into this important part of Bermuda’s economy.”

The public can view the options presented in the study starting half an hour before the meeting presentations start. The presentations will be given by the Minister of Transport and his staff.

The meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday, 11th October at St. James Church Hall, Sandys, starting at 7:00 pm with the presentation at 7:30 pm,
  • Wednesday, 12th October at the Cathedral Church Hall, starting at 6 p.m. with the presentation at 6.30 p.m.
  • Thursday, 13th October at Penno’s Wharf, St. George’s starting at 7 p.m. with the presentation at 7.30 p.m.

Minister Lister said: “No decisions have been made regarding the options. Once we receive input from the public and other stakeholder groups, we will decide how best to proceed.”

$70 Million – which really means $100 million – for tourists who spend $100 each at 10% profit. So we need ten million tourists to pay it off. Are you people serious?????????? How many decades will this take?????? How much dope are you smoking???

If you even have the $70 mill, use it to build a casino in St G. No further issue. Oh I almost forgot: F*ck the church (who will be dead against it even tho they don’t pay any effing taxes).

I would think if there are no public copies made available, and if the public can only glimpse this (lengthy) report 30 minutes before each meeting, this is not really an exercise in informed and intelligent analysis of what Bermuda needs to do. It is a political gambit….’consulting the public’.
Just widen the fxxg channel and get on with it!

  6. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

Too much money that we don’t have. Doesn’t financially make sense and we’d never make the money back. As I said above – much could be done with 70 – 100 mill. In addition, if they widen the cut, ships will still pass St G by when there’s a gust of wind. St G needs to totally rebrand itself and stop messing about in the cruise ship business.

I will be at the meeting in St G. Will you?

I say leave the cut. We need to do something but this ain’t it!

I agree totally. Invest that money elsewhere in reinventing St George.
