Dale Butler To Host Two Economic Forums

October 27, 2011

Parliamentarian Dale Butler will be hosting two public forums over the next week on the island’s worsening economic situation and mounting Bermudian unemployment.

The Progressive Labour Party MP, who represents a Warwick constituency, said feedback he’s received on the campaign trail leaves him in no doubt his constituents’ chief concerns remain the economy and jobs.

“While canvassing my constituency, a high priority issue on the minds of the residents of Warwick North East has been the economy, and more specifically, employment,” he said. “I have therefore decided to hold two public forums where the community can engage in productive discussion.”

Recently released census figures reveal that Bermuda’s unemployment rate has nearly tripled over the last ten years.

Preliminary results of the 2010 census an eight percent jobless rate for Bermudians in 2010. During the last census in 2000, the unemployment rate stood at just three percent.

The first of Mr. Butler’s forums — focussed on “Unemployment and Young Men” — will take place on Thursday, October 27 at 7:30pm at Warwick Workman’s Club.

“With many skilled and educated young men finding themselves unemployed during this economic downturn,” Mr. Butler said, “the purpose of this meeting is to bring these young men and their parents or supporters together, at one time, to form think tanks and to network.”

High-profile panellists for the second forum — “You, Me & The Economy” — scheduled for Thursday, November 3, at 7:30pm at Warwick Workman’s Club, will include Premier and Minister of Finance Paula A. Cox; Minister of Economy, Trade & Industry Senator Kim Wilson, JP; as well as Bermuda College lecturer Craig Simmons.

All residents of Warwick and the wider community are invited to attend.

In announcing these events, Mr. Butler stated that he believes that community engagement will contribute substantially to solving the problems that are currently affecting Bermuda.

  1. Organic Bermudian says:

Maybe if you did THESE initiatives before our NOW PRESSING Economic/JOBLESS crisis we could have been that much further ahead! Also WHY waste time with a form when you can PRINT your ideas and POST them in AREAS where the are easily ACCESSED!! PLP you are SOOOO late in REACTING to the SOCIAL ISSUES facing BERMUDIANS!!!!

Mr. Butler how many BERMUDIANS did you help break into the LITTLE VENICE GROUP CREW????

    • Shorta ranks says:

I called Mr. Butler and he said many Bermudians have applied to Little Venice and been taken on. Very few wanted to wait and those in the kitchen areas left on their own accord. The office itself he said is filled with them. He went on to ay prior to the downturn very few applied.
The forum he revealed came as a results of constituents saying they wanted it. so he booked the hall that night$200 and paid for $600 with of adverts.

And he said people always say politicians do not listen but the forum is another clear example he did and responded to what they wanted. Call him. an interesting guy who has always worked.

      • Shorta ranks says:

        I called Mr. Butler back
        1. 1998 he runs for office and gets elected. Has 10 job offers with some paying more than his present company. He asked 10 people what todo and all said take the Little Venice job. He did. Well, I dont know anyone who does that.
        2. The group hires chefs, waiters, kitchen porters, bartenders, hostesses etc. There are no cashier post
        3. since 1998, to now, very few people apply for waiters positions
        4. Hostesses were hired at Lido, elbow beach, Blu and Fourways and sometimes at La Tratt. None are neeeded at the two airport restaurants or Tuckers point or the fast food places or Cafe 4
        5. The one or two chefs who applied were hired. You dont see the chefs and dishwashers but he said I could take a tour. Start at Harbourfront some kid name Mikkal who ran for the PLp has a brother working there
        6. Rule on bartenders is if there are seats at a bar you have to have local bartenders…..you can find locals at Mickeys, Lido, Sea Breeze…the one at Harbourfront went back to school
He gave other examples but I cant remember
        7. No applicants for Maitred etc. There are Bermudians in catering

I suggest you give him a call and take a tour.
        Oh he presents in schools.
        He does not interview

        • Lion says:

Are you the official cheerleader for Mr. Butler? Maybe you can be his Secretary to the Cabinet when he becomes Premier. (smile)

  2. Sad Bunch says:

    Dear Mr Butler,

FISH CAKES cannot revive our Economy, nor generate any sensible GDP, neither can pig farming, so please do not bring these comical examples of prosperity to your Forum.

Also, after all your years as an MP why all of a sudden to you, MP Perinchief all of a sudden have the answers to Bermuda’s woes of economy and crime.

Me thinks this is the time to sing for one’s supper to get a Cabinet position and $170,000 salary.

    Sad

    • Shorta ranks says:

How sick. You want MPs to respond to what their constituents want and he does and you come up with this sick comment when you yourself do so little. I saw an advert today and it said the Fishcakes generated the funds for the Pastor Eugene Virgil Financial Award to the Bermuda College. They had $200 left and gave that to a student going to Berkelee School of Music in Boston. Not bad. so if he gets a $170,000salary good for him. He deserves it. Had he stayed in the principalship he would have done much better than his little backbench salary . Hey if he did not resign he would still be in Cabinet. so think before you run this nonsense.

  3. Lion says:

A waste of time. You work for the Italians and I know you are not trying to help Bermudians. How many Bermudian men have you helped besides yourself. As a Minister you were useless and now that there is an election you think that fishcakes will get you back in the House again. Why don’t you tell your constituents you tried to move from your seat to what is viewed as a safe seat. I am sure they would like to know that.

    • Shorta ranks says:

i called Mr. Butler and he indicated that in January he was asked to move to Const 24. He did consider it and did the necessary investigations and contacts with the branch and walked the constituency but after reflection he decided to stay where he was even though he lost a major slice of his voters who always supported him. You are right he did investigate it and thought about it and clearly would have one against an unknown but he stayed.

      • Lion says:

I know this is incorrect because I also checked with the branch and he was trying desperately to move. Why don’t you ask the branch for the real story and not one that make him look like he wants to stay for the people of his present constituency. No body want to lose, not even him. Once the political career is gone so will the rest of what he has because he serves a purpose whilst in Parliament.

    • Shorta ranks says:

Well I called the PLp and they sent me a copy of the letter Mr. Butler mailed to his constituents about 2 weeks ago. In it he tells them he was asked by another Branch to leave 25 and come to them but he decided to stay in 25. AHAHAHAH. Says a lot about your lack of research.
Called Mr. Butler and he said he was in a hurry and he did not want to speak about his accomplishments so I called the PLp and they said:
      1. Day Care
      2. Historic Heartybeats
      3. Two successful drumlines
      4. A successful Carifta games
      5. $11 million for cricket
      6. Funds for clubs
      7. adoption Bill PAssed
      8. National Heroes Day

They were in a hurry because the office was closing so they said call back tomorrow. But I am sure you are bored.

      • Lion says:

You really do not know the real Mr. Butler. The one you see is a smoke screen to cover for the real on. He knows and I know but I won’t trash him because I am above that but just ask him how many of his own people he has hurt including those who have sttod by him.

  4. Tired Unqualified Overaged says:

I was talking to a friend today, he loves statistics, which is telling given the insistence of Bermuda’s current tired political elite who continually hold on to power, whilst bankrupt of any new intellectual capacity, ideas, or ability to solve the country’s current woes, key facts:

    - David Cameron, Leader of UK Govt 45 years old

    - Barak Obama 50

cant spend much time on this, but the PLP want skilled 30 – 45 year olds to wait another 20 years to get into representational politics, is this about a tired generation maintaining their incomes? or is this about the best team on the field to solve our countries problems???

    • Shorta ranks says:

A good point. In the Uk and in the USA and Bermuda those who want to run put forward their names. That is how it works.
so Neletha an older politician will be succeeded by David Burt who put forward his name
Walton Brown is younger than Wayne Perinchief
Minister Kim wilson is younger than Walter Lister.
so now you can see and decide. and where those who have applied in all 3 cases above a younger person is running.
Mr. Butler stated he had 3 people interested in running for his seat but they did not tell him who. They dropped out after they looked at the boundaries. His has changed just like Zane Desilva and the OBA smell blood. Looks like Butle rwilll be gone. The hardest working minister with a long track record of accomplishments that are RECORDED and who canvasses all year round. Well, he wont be a lost. He said it might be his last term.

  5. Ironic Much? says:

Seems to me that there’s and interesting circle here: you are going to hold a chat about young men and the jobless rate? I strongly believe that one is the result of the other. Young men are killing each other and scaring jobs off the island. If you can get them all to down their guns and pick up some tools, then that would be a successful chat. Good luck with that. Let me know how it goes as I certainly will NOT be venturing to Warwick after dark anymore – especially if you are inviting young men to your chat. Will there be a metal detector at the door? Just wondering.

  6. B, a Lady says:

So much talk from our MP ‘s and so little action. Parle Italiano?

  7. Sing for your Supper says:

    Brother Dale,

What have you been promised to jump on the “we will deliver progress when we hear your ideas” bandwaggon?

Have you been offered a Cabinet position if you take home a seat for the Party?

Have you been offered a managerial position in the Restaurant Chain if you stay in politics to help Romanians get visa’s to come and serve beers

Dale you are not respected any more, too much flip flop flip flop

Time to leave the building and turn out the Lights, of I forgot your Party man Brother Leroy has all the lights

  8. specialgirl4 says:

Keep working to serve your country Dale. You are doing great !! You are actually working, rather than just talking.

    • Rick Rock says:

Well, Dale was the guy who admitted he would not vote with his conscience on the Uigher issue because he knew it might cost him his Cabinet position and income. So, essentially, his vote was bought. He is a man who can be bought. So much for integrity.

In addition, look who he has on the panel. The Plagiarising Premier, one of the people who got us in this mess to begin with. She who can’t implement a payroll tax change without screwing it all up.

      • Shorta ranks says:

Another sick person with stories mixed up. It is incredible to have a Premier on the panel with her chief critic. If he had avoided Craig simmons you would say she was a chicken. Your type sit on the sidelines and spectate. That is the best you can do. You probably cant even tie your own lacens.

        • Rick Rock says:

Hey Shorta, what exactly do you allege I ‘mixed up’? Tell us all. If you can’t, put up or shut up. Everything I said was absolutely true.

          • Rick Rock says:

I withdraw the previous comment, you are right, he did resign over the Uighers.

  9. STEWEY BABCOCK says:

    Did I miss anything ?

  10. Shorta ranks says:

You should have come to the meeting. But no you just sit and criticise. At least he did what his constituents asked him to do. If he didn’t you would be the first to complain.

You did not miss anything. He resigned over the Uighers and did not go back Seems like they dont want a worker. They just want him to do like most …..and what is that NOTHING.

    • Lion says:

Please tell me how many people turned out for the meeting because Dale is all about Dale.

  11. tommy Chong says:

Dale is has no worries because his immediate family will be fine since they all have jobs. His immediate family’s extended family of 94 million will be alright also since they plan to take the rest of the Bermudians jobs once dale gets them a work permit.

  12. Bored says:

    money see money do.

    monkey see monkey do.

number one way to waste time in the office, convene a meeting to discuss what you are employed to do.

Smokes, mirrors and of course progress.

    The OBA is a joke.
