FIFA Begins Caribbean Bribery Cases

October 12, 2011

The FIFA election bribery cases began yesterday [Oct.11], with 15 Caribbean soccer officials starting to explain their part in an alleged plot involving former FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam. Football’s world governing body said a special panel would hear the defendants over three days and is expected to deliver verdicts this coming Friday.

The 15 officials from 11 Caribbean countries are accused of accepting $40,000 cash payments during Bin Hammam’s later-abandoned challenge to FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Bermuda is among the Caribbean Football Union members whose officials refused $40,000 cash payments, allegedly arranged by bin Hammam and former FIFA vice president Jack Warner in Trinidad.

A video showing former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner telling Caribbean officials how to deal with cash gifts from Mohamed Bin Hammam was published by a British newspaper today [Oct.12].

The “Daily Telegraph” reports that, “Telegraph Sport has seen the remarkable footage in which Warner, the controversial former vice-president of FIFA, appears to be recorded telling other members of the Caribbean Football Union members they must decide whether to accept the ‘gifts’ of $40,000 (£25,000) each, and urging them to vote for Bin Hammam rather than Sepp Blatter in the FIFA presidential elections.”

“The recording was made on May 11, the day after the money is alleged to have offered the money in individual brown envelopes, and is being used as evidence at a FIFA hearing this week at which 16 officials from the Caribbean Football Union are accused of violating FIFA’s code of ethics.”
