Caron Bermuda Community Leader Awards

Caron Bermuda hosted the 3rd annual Community Service Awards Breakfast for over 180 guests on November 3 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel. The event, sponsored by Butterfield Bank, honored seven individuals and companies for their outstanding community activism and leadership in fighting the battle against addiction.

Caron Bermuda also presented a Special Recognition Award posthumously to the family of David Gosling, for his exemplary compassion and courage in his service to recovery.

The seven individuals and companies honored at this year’s Community Awards Breakfast were Ian Bridges, Shirley Place, Marilyn (Peggy) Jackson, Rosemary Phillips, Donna Trott and companies PartnerRe and Belco. An Award of Service was also presented to Caron Board Director Brenda Lehman, for her tireless dedication and commitment to Caron Bermuda over the past several years.

“Our 2011 Community Service Award recipients have truly made a difference in the lives of those who struggle with the disease of addiction,” said Gita Blakeney-Saltus, Regional Vice President of Caron Bermuda.

“Some of our recipients are known in the community while others are ‘quiet warriors,’ ” she added. “In this important community event, we recognize our friends and partners’ impact and contributions, and celebrate the importance of working together to tackle many of the challenges and issues we face today.”

The Annual Community Service Awards breakfast is now an anticipated event that recognizes and supports the award recipients and Caron Bermuda’s mission to provide treatment options for those battling addiction. Doug Tieman, President and CEO of Caron US Treatment Centers, was special guest for the event.

The seven Community Service Awards are: the Caron Assan Addiction Professional Award; the Community Leadership Award; the Human Services Award; Educational Excellence Award; the Unsung Heroes Award; the Spirituality Award and the Alumni Award.

Award Recipients Include:
Caron Assan Addiction Professional Award: Shirley Place has been described by her colleagues and clients alike as a superlative leader in her field. As the Clinical Director of Turning Point, she is confronted daily with the anguish of addiction for both the person and the family unit. Her sincere dedication and passion for the ongoing battle of this disease embodies her selfless nature in offering support and education for the client and their loved ones. Ms. Place is recognized as consistently ensuring a personal commitment to excellence in care and services.

Community Leadership Award: PartnerRE Ltd. is a global reinsurer that provides multi-line reinsurance to insurance companies. PartnerRe is committed to responsible corporate citizenship and supporting charitable initiatives within the countries it is located. PartnerRe supports organizations that contribute towards improving the quality of life, education and overall enrichment of the Bermuda community. The company acknowledges their belief in supporting Caron Bermuda because addiction has a profound impact on Bermuda, and Caron Bermuda is making a difference. PartnerRe has provided consistent support and encouragement of Caron Bermuda’s work since 2006. Their philanthropic investments are far-reaching as they consistently demonstrate leadership and compassion for the people of Bermuda.

Human Services Award: Belco is known as a leader in establishing and implementing a workplace drug and alcohol policy since 1994. The intent of the policy, developed through collaboration with their trade union, the Energy Supply Trade Union (ESTU), is to reinforce their commitment to a safe, healthy and productive workplace for all employees, whilst recognizing that substance abuse by employees has the ability to impair performance and negatively impact productivity.

Belco recognizes alcohol or drug dependency as a treatable condition and is committed to providing as much support as possible for those who teat positive through either random or “for cause” testing. Belco has consistently gone beyond the remit of their roles to identify the necessary levels of support. The company has played a vital role in the recovery of many, with a drug and alcohol policy that is believed to be critical to effective operations, safety and employee relations today and into the future.

Education Excellence Award: Marilyn (Peggy) Jackson is known as caring, knowledgeable, giving and dedicated. She has been a practicing Social Worker and Counselor for thirty plus years, and joined CedarBridge Academy in 2010. Ms. Jackson is recognized for her focus on empowerment, and assisting individuals and students to develop healthier coping practices and make better life choices. She has consistently embraced the concept of teamwork to continually enhance the collaborative process.

Unsung Hero Award: Donna Trott has received high praise for her superior supervision to the Bermuda Assessment & Referral Service (BARC). She has been instrumental in raising the level and quality of Assessment Reports to the treatment agencies, courts, EAP programmes and other community agencies, including medical institutions. Ms. Trott was recognized for her efforts in galvanizing the treatment community through regular visits and conversations, with the ultimate goal of better service for the clients in Bermuda. She has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to her BARC role. As a consummate and solution-driven professional, she demonstrates sincere concern, understanding and advocacy for each of her clients.

Spirituality Award: Rosemary Phillips has been Harbour Light Chaplain for the past three years. She is responsible for planning, coordinating and evaluating all pastoral care and ensuring that residents are served in a manner befitting Christian principles. The male residents of Harbour Light state that Chaplain Phillips offers them hope, and she has gained the ultimate respect from the residents. She is described as a person of compassion, understanding and integrity, who offers comfort to those who may be feeling challenged during treatment. Chaplain Phillips is a woman of faith and is loved and admired by many.

Alumni Award: Ian Bridges, a Caron alumnus, has shown an exemplary commitment to his personal recovery journey as well as an unwavering desire to help others in their quest for sobriety. He struggled with addiction from an early age, and found recovery in 2008. Mr. Bridges, Manager of Selectron Ltd., was recently appointed as a Board Director of Caron Bermuda and was a speaker at the Caron Bermuda Award of Excellence Dinner held in June.
