Minister Furbert Travels To London

November 8, 2011

Less than a week into his new position as the Minister of Business Development & Tourism, Wayne Furbert traveled to London this weekend for the annual World Travel Market [WTM].

A statement issued by the Ministry said, “Minister Furbert attended a number of key trade meetings which included British Airways and Expedia Worldwide, as well as participated in a television interview Breaking Travel News and Caribbean Tourism Organisation. The Minister was also interviewed as part of radio broadcast syndication to over 15 radio stations across the UK.

“He is sharing his vision for the future of Bermuda’s tourism industry with over 20 media outlets such as Conde Nast Traveller, TTG Lux and The Independent.

“After a busy first day of back to back meetings at WTM, the day culminated with the annual Bermuda Appreciation Dinner at the stunning Plateau restaurant in Canary Wharf.

“The busy event was attended by  trade partners, media, travel bloggers and friends of Bermuda including Miss Bermuda, Jana Outerbridge. While chatting to Ms Outerbridge, Minister Furbert thanked her for proudly representing Bermuda, and said that she was a true ambassador for the Island.”

Minister Furbert with Miss Bermuda Jana Outerbridge, who was also in the UK for the Miss World Pageant:

The Appreciation Dinner offered the chance for Bermuda to recognise some of their key partners with awards for their support for the destination. Winners on the evening included Purely Bermuda and BA Holidays who were both awarded with the Excellence in Partnership Award.

Meanwhile, Adventures in Radio took the prize of Outstanding Partnership for their broadcast promotion that took place earlier this year. The collaboration brought together several radio stations that did a remote broadcast from Bermuda to the UK, touching over 4 million listeners.

The next couple of days will see Minister Furbert continuing to meet with key trade partners and media introducing himself and his ideas to increase visitation to Bermuda from the UK.

Minister Furbert said, “I am thoroughly enjoying my trip to London and meeting with our prized travel associates. Being able to attend a key travel event such as the World Travel Market so early in my tenure has allowed me to gain valuable insights into one of our key markets.

“I look forward to continuing to build on these existing relationships and forging new ones that will benefit the island and further support this market.”

  1. Yup says:

Didn’t take long for UBP/PLP Furbert to start spending money. Wonder how many tourists will start coming to Bermuda cuz of this?

This is your man…taking from Perter to pay Wayne..
      Thank goodness we’re leaving!

“We are subject to the risk that…our network marketing programme could be found not to be in compliance with applicable laws or regulations.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Furbert said he was offering Bermudians a business opportunity and that YTD is setting up operations in Canada and the Bahamas.

The Chicago Tribune article also quoted a warning about multi-level marketing plans on the U.S. Federal Trade Commission website.

It said: “Plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors inevitably collapse when no new distributors can be recruited. And when a plan collapses, most people – except perhaps those at the very top of the pyramid – lose their money.”

  2. wtf says:

wow not even a week in and he flying away. hope he brings a plane full back with him.

    • Family Man says:

He probably will but he doesn’t have to stop at customs like us mere mortals.

He’s on the gravy train now so he can go right through.

  3. cocoa says:

    Geesh! First trip already!!

  4. Curious says:

I suppose Miss Bermuda is supposed to click her heels and then tourists are to appear…. Get Real People, we need to promote our Island ABROAD!

    • Chart says:

Good promotions do not hinge upon the Minister showing up. Good promitions are based on marketing, advertising, social media, etc that reach large numbers of interested travellers … not a grin and greet from a small town politician.

  5. joonya says:

“He is sharing his vision for the future of Bermuda’s tourism industry”

Really?? What Crystal Ball has he been looking into and why hasnt he shared it with us first?

  6. Ob-Jective says:

    Dear Complainer,

    SHUT UP!!!

  7. pebblebeach says:

What is the vision for the future of Bermuda’s tourism Minister Furbert…be nice if you shared it with us.

  8. joonya says:

    Future…. Really Wayne?!?!?
When you have a transportation system that shuts down every few weeks because some pr*ck accomodates his whiney, spoiled members every chance they can get to have time off, tourists hand bag snatchings every summer, attitude and hatred towards foreigners in general (not just expat workers), how the f*ck do you see a future?
Please enlighten us, or stop inflating your ego and stop wasting (more) of our money.

  9. Zoey says:

I wonder how he prepared for this trip in such a short period of time. Please Please Please share your vision cuz i’m sure you have not been drawing a plan while sipping tea at your cafe. What a darn joke..

    • PEPPER says:

Wayne, is all about himself…and he will always go with what is better for him ….do not believe he has Bda at heart…..
The horrible things he said about the P.L.P. when he was the oposition leader are documented…..and how the hell Paula, thinks she can trust this man (who has his own agenda to be the leader of this Island.) O.M.G.

  10. Terry says:

    Whats going on…..

  11. Contractor dave says:

He can’t win can he – if he had missed this event he would have been critisised, if he goes to promote Bermuda then he is critisised………

    • joonya says:

Dave, people are getting fedup with the “same ole”. That being no value for our dollar. He can blame his almighty party for that one.

    • Star man says:

“if he had missed this event he would have been critisised”. No he wouldn’t have, because nobody gives a sh/t about this dumb conference. The Party Lovin Party LOVES these 2nd rate conferences though!!! Wayne will probably get some sort of Award too.

  12. True Bermudian says:

    You get that cheddar Wayne.

How’s the pyramid scheme working for ya?

You can fool some people some of the time…

    • Terry says:

Well apparently the “fool some” is working very well. Just wait until they open the Family Pyramid store. Greg has no idea…….

  13. Waiting Patiently says:

meh that looks like a lot of official business in UK. Dont see the problem with him going at all.

Meetings, interviews, etc? sounds legit. The only issue i would have is how many people went with him. If not a big entourage, then i’d say it is a necessary expense.

  14. Justice says:

I wonder if he flew first class? I know those tickets don’t run cheap. Oh to be an MP living the dream on my fellow countrymans dime.

  15. Jen says:

A British journalist asked Minister Furbert about the withdrawal of the Carnival Cruise line, apparently he responded with words to the effect that it wasn’t his remit but that of the Minister of Transport! Also seems that Holland America are pulling back from Bermuda.

  16. wow says:

fools and children should not see unfinished work.

the trip wayne furbert is on, was supposed to be for Minister Minors, now that she is no longer the Minister, the Tourisim Mininister Wayne Furbert must go on the trip, seems simple, why do people always make a big deal when there is none.

  17. vampy says:

wonder who paid for that.. oh yeah we did.. i hope he brings me back something from harrods…

  18. GPS says:

YOU OBA/UBP TYPE OF PEOPLE ARE REALLY SOME MAD PEOPLE…IF CRAIG CANNON-BEER WENT YOU GREET MISS BERMUDA ALL OF YOU OBA/UBP’S WOULD HAVE BEEN ALL EXCITED!….VERY FUNNY!

    • Terry says:

IfCraig went it would out of his pocket. Since OBA is not Gover(n)ment) whats your point. OBA does not have funds from Gover(n)ment to fund things like this. Stop talking crap.

    • Rick Rock says:

But it’s OK with you if the UBP/PLP Minister goes is it? He’s a Minister for 5 minutes and already he’s off on a First class junket with his $175k a year salary and guaranteed pension, and you’re fine with that?

      What a sucker you are.

      • GPS says:

Rick Rock…go join the PLP so you can make a difference, and stop hiding behind your picket fence throwing clothes pegs and hoping the pinch someone.

        You too Terry

I am in a party…every weekend to be exact.

My party, everyone dances to the beat and not the words.

        • Mad Dawg says:

Join the PLP…? What if he’s not an elitist who’s in it for himself? Wouldn’t he have a problem fitting in?

  19. Please... says:

Its likely that Minister Minors was set to attend this meeting therefore it is quite reasonable that the new minister would have attended. Take it easy people!

  20. Underwriter says:

wayne stop touching up di young girl bie

  21. LOTS*4*SALE says:

He’s latched onto that teat already and he’s got some serious suction on him . Dude will chase that money all the way to Timbukto if that’s where it leads him .

  22. Cancer says:

What da helll… It ain’t even been a week… Wonder when he packed his bags. Guess wayne decided he’s gonna get his one way or the other! PLP backbenchers accept this nonsense??

  23. PawPaw says:

Hmmmmm..is that a Saville Row suit as well?
What do I have to do to become a PeeLPee politician!! lol

  24. Hello says:

Don’t you think the first trip he should have taken was to talk to Carnival Cruises or any of the cruise lines offices.

Seriously another Big Spender on the gravey train. What is the true meaning of this trip. NOT to attract tourist to BDa.
One week on the job and he is in London already. What a joke.

  25. Mad Dawg says:

Well as soon as he gets back I’m sure the UBP/PLP Minister will make sure that work starts THIS MONTH on the NEW PARK HYATT. As you all will recall, DR Brown PROMISED just before he left office a year ago that work would start on the new hotel in November 2011. That’s NOW. Funding was in place, he said, and ground would be broken in November 2011. So that means during the next 22 days. We all know they will make sure this definitely happens, as promised, because we all know they are not a bunch of two-faced liars. They wouldn’t deceive us, would they. They would only tell the absolute truth. We can definitely take them at their word. Right?
