Adrien Lewis, Noah Furbert, Aalai Wolfe, Kioshi Burgess, and Amani Walker are the the first recipients of Capital G’s ‘Inspiration Scholarship’, which is geared towards artistically gifted teenagers.

Berkeley student Kioshi Burgess was described as having a passion for acting and dance, and CedarBridge student Noah Furbert was described as a “musically gifted” student who performs and composes on a variety of instruments.

CedarBridge student Adrien Lewis has achieved a high level of performance in flute, Berkeley student Amani Walker combines her love for dance with her musical ability, while CedarBridge student Aalai Wolfe is a singer, dancer, actress and songwriter.

The ‘Inspiration’ Scholarships are intended for Bermuda’s artistically gifted students, with funding provided for their private instruction, programme tuition, etc. in their specific arena of visual or performing arts.

Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith was present at the ceremony and said, “Tomorrow, will be exactly seven months since Capital G. Limited and the Ministry of Education got together to launch the ‘Inspiration’ Scholarships.

“In those few months, the criteria was developed and agreed and the public was introduced to a scholarship award designed to answer a specific need.

“We both believe that the area of focus we have chosen is one that does not always receive the attention that it deserves (in terms of financial support for learning) – our artistically gifted young people need more than our applause – they need our financial help as well,” said Dame Jennifer.

“You know that I am passionate about the arts, now you know that Capital G are equally passionate. We both believe that the arts can be transformative and that people can be changed because of their participation.

“While the arts are just as important as English, math, science and other core subjects, gifted practicioners need wider exposure to excell. In these economic times, the gift of Capital G in this regard, is so necessary.

Dame Jennifer continued on to say: “A world without art is a world without soul, so today is a very gratifying day not just for Capital G and the Ministry, but for these worthy young people in particular.

“Recipients you – and your parents and teachers – should feel tremendously proud. You are being given the opportunity to follow your dreams… your passion… and in that regard you are pioneers today; the first recipients of the inspirational scholarships.

“Congratulations! And special thanks to Capital G Ltd. for creating this scholarship. This is a fine example that public/private partnerships add so much value to our Educational system.”

Eligible applicants for the Capital G ‘Inspiration’ Scholarship must demonstrate a clear special talent in the visual or performing arts. Student applicants must be aged 13 to 18 years old and currently enrolled in a public middle or senior school. To apply for this year’s scholarship visit here on Capital G’s website.
