St. Paul’s AME Remembrance Day Service

November 3, 2011

St. Paul AME Church in Hamilton will mark its Remembrance Sunday this Sunday [Nov. 6] at the 10:55am service and war veterans and their families are invited to attend the service which will recognise their sacrifice in the name of freedom.

“We want the community to join us in saluting these men and women of courage and determination whose struggle changed the world…” said pastor of St. Paul, Rev. Dr. Lanel D. Guyton.

During the service Pastor Guyton will bless replacement flags of the Bermuda Militia Artillery [BMA] and the Bermuda Militia Infantry [BMI] — the two primarily black Bermuda units amalgamated into the Bermuda Regiment in 1965 — and mark the achievement of those who brought the new war memorial to fruition. [Warrant Officer and NCOs of the Bermuda Militia Artillery are pictured the Examination Battery, St. David's, circa 1944].

Rev. Guyton added: “So much is owed to those who served and so we want to acknowledge them and ensure that their contribution is never forgotten. We will remember them”.

The service is broadcast live on FM102.7. Poppies will be available at the church also.

here we go again…….is this a separation of BMA/BMI/BVRC?

There is good in every situation but this smells of exclusion in one breath and the final inclusion in the other…let’s remember EVERYBODY and remove the institutionalized racism

So when the Bermuda War Veterans Association still refuse to recognize the service of these men and women and to this day still argue about who can march on the Parade, use their money for everything except helping veterans….what is that ? This is church and it looks to me as if they’re invited; which is more than they’ve ever done for the black veterans. On behalf of my grandfather who served in Palestine and North Africa; a hero there but a paraiah to them since 1947 here.

ALL war veterans and widows are now the beneficiaries of the Bermuda Poppy Appeal, which is now run by the local charity The Royal British Legion (Bermuda) NOT the War Veteran’s Association, which is a private society. The defence of Bermuda was vital to the war effort, as was the heroism of ALL veterans who served in the various theatres of war.
The Remembrance Day Parade and its protocol is the provenance of the Bermuda Regiment. ALL war veterans may march in the Parade, men and women,ALL family members of a loved one can follow the Parade, wearing the departed veteran’s medals on the right hand side of clothing. ALL veterans plus a carer are invited to the Governor’s lunch thereafter at Shed 6, whether or not they’ve marched in the Parade. ALL veterans’ names should now be gathered together in alphabetic order on the War Memorial (call me for late additions)
ALL war veterans and widows of Bermuda should now be in receipt of the Government’s war pension and benefits. Call Ronald Smith (295 5151 x 1703) for further details.
The Poppy Appeal funds are kept in Bermuda and used for ALL veterans and their families; no funds are invested or saved.
RBL (Bermuda) helps with pensions, benefits, air ambulancing, emergency needs, medical, legal and family issues. We liaise with Government departments, the Ministry of Defence, international charities and agencies, and have places currently available in a designated new nursing home.
There were disgraceful episodes of discrimination against some veterans both white and black in the past, which are reflected in the remarks by the respondent above.
I am certain that St. Paul’s AME will welcome all to their service on Nov. 6th. There are also services on 13th November in churches across the Island, and a special gathering and wreath-laying by the Premier and the Governor in the Square at St. George
If you or a veteran need information and/or help, please contact the RBL poppy Appeal at the Bermuda Regiment 238 1045 or 335 8212
Remembrance Day is about Respect, Remembrance and Recognition of Bermuda’s greatest generations, all of whom shaped the course of history, and none of whom should be forgotten.

      • wondering says:

do you speak for the Regiment or are you just as usual using someone’s name for your benefit?

  3. carol everson says:

To ‘Wondering’,the only benefits that apply here are to the war veterans, their widows and families.
Qualified Welfare Caseworkers for the Armed Forces charities, such as myself, receive no salary and are motivated solely to provide the best possible assistance to veterans in need.
You’re welcome to contact me via. the Bermuda Regiment to discuss any concerns further – I’ll be happy to meet you.
Meanwhile, let’s not lose sight of the important fact that this event is a church service celebrating Bermuda’s Greatest Generations.
