Tony Cordeiro Wins Photography Award

November 20, 2011

Last night [Nov.19] Tony Cordeiro was presented with the inaugural AFL Prism Award for his lifetime achievement in the field of photography.

Mr. Cordeiro was presented with a custom-made cut-glass prism trophy at a special ceremony held at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Representatives of the arts and photographic communities in Bermuda attended the presentation of the award, the first accolade of its kind for Bermuda-based professional photographers.

Mr. Cordeiro, now retired, enjoyed a career in photography spanning over 40 years. He established himself first as a resort photographer at the old Bermudiana Hotel and on day-cruises organised by Kitson Tours.

Having honed his skills in the tourism industry, Mr. Cordeiro went on to become a photojournalist at Bermuda Press Holdings for the majority of his career.

Mr. Cordeiro covered everything from international news to all kinds of sports and high-profile court cases on his varied assignments.

His career highlights include an official visit to his homeland, The Azores, with former Premier of Bermuda, Sir David Gibbons, as well as comparing cameras with Prince Charles during a photo shoot at Royal Naval Dockyard.

Graeme Outerbridge from the Bermuda Professional Photographic Association says: “We selected Tony as the debut winner for the AFL Prism Award as he stands as the archetype photographer that we were looking to formally recognise through the creation of this award. Throughout his photojournalistic career, Tony demonstrated true mastery in the medium worthy of celebrating.

“In talking to Tony’s former colleagues and associates during our preparations for the presentation, it was clear the high level of respect that he commands both professionally and personally.”

Cindy Campbell, Chief Operating Officer of AFL Investments, says: “I would like to congratulate Tony on this tremendous achievement; he will now stand as an example for other photographers to emulate. As a Bermudian company we recognise it as our duty to support the local arts community. We are delighted to support BPPA in taking the Prism Award from an idea to reality, as achieving outstanding photography consistently over a lifetime is a unique skill and one we felt deserving of an award platform.”
