Video: Hurricane Season In Five Minutes

November 29, 2011

The Atlantic Hurricane Season lasts five months — from June 1 to November 30. But a new US National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration [NOAA] time-lapse satellite animation allows viewers to watch the formation and progression of all of this year’s tropical storms in just five minutes.

The 2011 hurricane season spared Bermuda but that doesn’t mean it was quiet. It tied with three other years for third busiest on record.

Beginning with Arlene and continuing through Sean – which brushed Bermuda earlier this month — the video shows time and again how the island was spared during the season.

The season had 19 tropical storms, with seven growing into hurricanes. Three of those blossomed into major hurricanes.

There were 120 deaths and $11 billion in property damage linked to this hurricane season. Hurricane Irene, which had two landfalls in the United States, was responsible for the bulk of that.

The strongest storm of the season was Ophelia, which climbed to a Category 4 hurricane as it swirled east of Bermuda.
