Video: East End ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’

December 3, 2011

Santa Claus bypassed Santa Claus Lane last night [Dec.2] and instead came right down Duke of York Street in St. George’s to St. Peter’s Church.

During the National Trust Christmas Walkabout in the East End, members of the Bermuda Menuhin Foundation Youth String Orchestra performed the festive season favourite “Here Comes Santa Claus” for visitors to the historic church.

In 1976, violin virtuoso Lord Yehudi Menuhin was on the island to perform in the Bermuda Festival. While here, his visit to the string group at Warwick Academy sparked his interest and out of it grew his idea to establish a string quartet in Bermuda that would provide instruction in stringed instruments to all of Bermuda’s school children.

To take his dream to fruition, the Menuhin Foundation was created.

The goal of the Foundation — which recently celebrated 35th anniversary – is to “foster and develop an interest in classical and other music and the playing thereof “, and ” to recruit teachers and organise and produce programmes and concerts and other forms of entertainment and musical education.”
