Video: Greenberg On Bermuda Culture

December 27, 2011

CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg is recommending visitors dispense with the Bermuda guide books and instead take the history books along when they go exploring the island.

Mr. Greenberg — who hosted his nationally syndicated radio travel show from the Fairmont Southampton when he was in Bermuda earlier this year — featured some of the island’s cultural attractions in a recent segment of his website’s “Hidden Gems” video series.

He recommended tourists visit the Royal Naval Cemetery in Ireland Island for an admittedly off-beat but compelling journey into the island’s past.

Mr. Greenberg said the memorials to those who died during the yellow fever epidemics which ravaged the British military in Bermuda during the mid-19th century chronicle a poignant and largely unknown chapter of the island’s history.

He also spotlighted two of the island’s churches in his “Hidden Gems” report,  the slave-built Cobbs Hill Methodist Church and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in St. George’s.
