Graceland Stable Clean-Up Underway

January 28, 2012

The day after a fire ravaged Graceland Stables killing three racing ponies, cleanup is underway with approximately 100 people turning out to lend a hand.

Yesterday the Driving Horse & Pony Club sent out an email asking people to come out today to help Graceland Stables get back on their feet.

Approximately 100 people have showed up to help, including some with trucks to cart debris away. Other stable owners have been kind enough to take in other ponies until the stable is fixed.

Yesterday morning [Jan.27] a fire broke out at the Stables — which are located off Cobbs Hill Road — with over a dozen firefighters responding. The fire took approximately an hour to bring completely under control.

Despite the valiant efforts to save all the animals, three racing ponies were killed by the blaze; Return to Sender and Bye Bye Byrd succumbing immediately and Tuxedo’s Lady dying later on as a result of severe burns.

Two people also were treated at hospital for minor injuries, with a 70-year-old Paget man treated for minor burns he received working to save the ponies, and a 71-year-old woman was also taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, and later released.

Despite the rain the work continues this afternoon, with the racing pony community coming together to help one of their own. One person in attendance called the support “amazing” and said they hope to have the stables ready for use inside of one week.

Bittersweet is what comes to mind for me. It’s so sad to have lost Sender, Byrd & Lady and see nothing left of the stables, but so incredibly wonderful to see us all coming together for two of the most amazing people I know! They have helped so many and as tragic as this is we can show them how much they are loved! Family, can’t break us no matter what happens!!! Thank you to all of those who have helped, no matter how small your contributions may seem, Graceland stables appreciates you!
