Upcoming: BASE Autism Workshop

To help parents and professionals increase their knowledge of how individuals on the autism spectrum learn; Bermuda Autism Support and Education Society (BASE) will offer a half day autism workshop.

The autism workshop, entitled Learning Styles And Autism Spectrum Disorders will be held on Saturday January 21st at Prospect Primary School Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. E-mail basebda@yahoo.com to register. The workshop is $15 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

The workshop will also help education professionals meet their required amount of professional development (PD) hours for Bermuda Educators Council (BEC) relicensing for teachers. Educators will receive a certificate for 3 1/2 hours of BEC training.

Workshop attendees will learn about:

  • Challenges that autism brings to learning and why these challenges exist
  • Learning styles that typically accompany autism and how to utilize learning strengths and challenges
  • Implications for teaching individuals on the autism spectrum

Parents and educators will become more successful in their interactions with individuals on the autism spectrum by developing a clearer understanding of autism spectrum disorders and implementing practical strategies based on individual learning styles. Autism is a neurological and developmental disorder that usually appears during the first three years of life. The core symptoms consist of difficulties, in varying degrees, in social behavior, communications and play. The cause of autism is unknown and it is estimated that about one in 150 children have some form of autism.
