Upcoming: 2012 Earth Hour Essay Contest

BELCO is now accepting entries for the 2012 Earth Hour Essay Competition, which has a theme of “Five Ways that I Keep My Bermuda Green.”

Students in each of the following Age Categories are invited to submit essays. Entries will be judged on content, ideas and creativity, as well as grammar, spelling, punctuation and how well the essay is written.

  • Ages 9-11 Essay of 200-300 words
  • Ages 12-14 Essay of 400-500 words
  • Ages 15-18 Essay of 800-1,000 words

The deadline for submitting essays is Friday, 9th March. Essays will be judged by representatives of BELCO, Greenrock and Bermuda National Library. Winners will be contacted, and will be announced during Greenrock’s Earth Hour Celebration, Saturday, 31st March, at Hamilton City Hall.

The winners in each age category [9 winners in total] will receive various prizes including $50.00, an Amazon Kindle Fire® pre-loaded with an environmental book and each 1st Place winner’s school will receive a cheque for $250.00 to use for an environmental project.

The competition is open to all Students in the specified Age Categories. Only one essay per student is allowed, and each essay must be written by one person (i.e., essays may not be submitted by groups of students working together).

Essays must be typed and double-spaced. Accuracy of facts is important; students are encouraged to include a resources page. Students are also encouraged to consult their school libraries, the library at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo and Bermuda National Library – Youth Library.

Each essay must be submitted with the following information clearly typed on it: Name of student, Gender of student, Age and grade in school, Name of teacher, Name of school and School/teacher phone number and/or e-mail address contact information
