Bermudian’s Film Set To Shoot In LA
Bermudian filmmaker Bayard Outerbridge is just weeks away from commencing principal photography on his thesis film at the prestigious American Film Institute.
And like even the most experienced veterans of the film industry, the aspiring producer is concerned with stretching the budget, increasing the production values and making the best film possible.
“We are moving into full pre-production mode on our AFI thesis film, ‘Machsom’,” said Mr. Outerbridge. ”We have made significant headway and are are very excited to be just under five weeks from principal photography.
“Every key team member is now working full time in prep mode as we race towards our first day of shooting on March 17.”
“Machsom” is a culture-clash story played out against the background of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The completion of a short, self-financed fiction thesis film by student teams comprising a producer, writer, director, cinematographer and editor is an integral part of the MFA programme at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles.

One of the world’s leading film school, AFI graduates including such celebrated filmmakers as writer/director Darren Aronofsky ["The Black Swan", "Requiem For A Dream"], producer/director/writer David Lynch ["Blue Velvet", "Mulholland Drive"], director John McTiernan ["Die Hard", "The Thomas Crown Affair"]. Mr. Outerbridge is believed to be the only Bermudian ever accepted for the AFI’s Master of Fine Arts programme.
Mr. Outerbridge, serving as “Machsom’s” producer, said while most of the financing for the film is now in place he is still looking for support to bring the budget up to his targeted goal
“Those of you that have contributed to our film already, we sincerely thank you for moving us on our way,” he said. “For those that were thinking about contributing, but have yet to do so, now is the time to make that donation!
“Since we haven’t yet reached our goal to achieve the desired production value, AFI has graciously given us two more weeks to do so before we’re required to lock the budget. In an ideal world, we would raise our last $20,000 in the next two weeks.
“We’ve been successful in finding locations, honing in on our actors, shot list, camera, performing costume and make up tests, workshopping scenes with actors, critiquing intentions scene-by-scene in class, finding appropriate stock footage, formulating plans for a Visual Effects shot, and working out deals with various vendors across town that will boost our production value and make our film achievable. All we need now is a bit more funding from some generous donors and/or grant organisations out there and we’ll be able to make the film we envision.”

Thank you Wiggin & Anne, We’re exactly four weeks from shooting and hard at work! Many many talented people with a great deal of experience have signed on as volunteers simply because they love the subject matter and passion we bring to the table and recognize that well-made AFI thesis films are launching pads to larger feature films in the near future. Even with all the volunteers and discounts, making a calling card film with high production value has inevitable hard costs! If any other Bermudians out there are able to make contributions, no matter how small, I promise you all that I will bring the success I may be lucky enough to see in this industry back home to our shores!
