BHS Students To Host Eco-Fashion Event

March 16, 2012

Students at The Bermuda High School will host a unique fashion event featuring designs made with at least 50% recycled or found materials on Friday March 23, 2012 at 7pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the school campus.

Inspired by the popular Project Runway reality competition on Lifetime hosted by Heidi Klum, the competition has seen 7 teams paired with mentors from local retailers AS Coopers, Atelerie, Boutique CC, Cecile, Gibbons Company, Lovit Boutique and Orange Bay Company to create designs that are made of at least 50% recycled or found materials.

On March 23rd, each team will send two designs down the runway to be judged on originality, wearability, presentation and use of recycled/found materials.

Jennifer Burland Adams, Director of Advancement at BHS, explains, “We were looking for an event that would involve students and connect them with alumni and others in the community and eco RUNWAY meets these objectives while combining artistic creativity with environmentalism and fashion.

“The girls have really had a fun time coming up with designs and then trying to figure out how to construct them with the eco-challenge portion of the competition.”

“As most people can probably appreciate, the fundraising environment is somewhat more difficult than in the past and we think this is an original and interesting way to raise funds for the School.”

Tara Burgess, Assistant Buyer for Cecile and one of the mentors added, “As an alumna of BHS it has been great to go back into the school as a mentor for eco RUNWAY. My group has been enthusiastic about their designs and I have enjoyed giving them advice on the best way to execute their vision.

“I’m about to start a degree in fashion from Polimoda University in Florence, Italy and I wish a competition like this had been around when I was in school as it really requires team work, creativity and attention to detail, especially when you have alternative materials in play. I’m curious to see what the other teams have put together and looking forward to next Friday when I can cheer my team on.”

Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults and are available by calling 278-3004, emailing advancement@bhs.bm or stopping by the main school office at 19 Richmond Road. Availability permitting, tickets will also be sold at the door, starting at 6:30pm on March 23rd.
