Bell To Leave Allied World Assurance

March 7, 2012

Allied World Assurance Company Holdings, AG announced today [Mar.7] that Bermuda-based Chief Operating Officer David Bell will be leaving the company to pursue other interests in Montana.

He will remain with Allied World until May 1, 2012 to provide assistance while the company transitions Mr. Bell’s responsibilities to other executives.

An internationally renowned humanitarian, Mr. Bell is co-founder of Grateful Nation Montana, which honours the sacrifices of that state’s fallen soldiers by making it very likely their children will attend college.

Established in 2007, the programme will pay for tuition at a state school, books, room and board. The organisation also mentors the children of soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Montana has one of the highest casualty rates of all states in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

A graduate of the University of Montana, last year Mr. Bell also spearheaded a campaign to erect a larger-than-life bronze tribute to the casualties of America’s most recent wars at the campus.

Unveiled on November 4 on the University of Montana campus, the bronze memorial honours the 40 Montanans who have sacrificed their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11.

Mr. Bell shepherded the memorial project from the moment it popped into his head as he and his wife strolled across the campus of their alma mater one day, spearheaded much of the fundraising for it and gave his word he would pick up any of the six-figure tab that donations didn’t cover.

The insurance executive joined Allied World from the Chubb Corporation a decade ago when the start-up company had just four employees operating out of a small office in Hamilton.

Allied World went public in 2006, and today the speciality insurer and reinsurer has more than 700 employees in offices in Bermuda, London, Dublin, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States, with revenues of more than $250 million.

As of March 1, 2012, John J. McElroy has assumed the title of Chief Operating Officer of the company and will be responsible for overseeing Allied World’s operations and administration, information technology, ceded reinsurance and new product development functions on a global basis. Mr. McElroy most recently served as president, Professional Lines for Allied World US.

Scott Carmilani, president and Chief Executive Officer of Allied World commented, “David has played an integral role in the development of the company over the past 10 years. He has made valuable contributions to our success, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors
