Ex-Bermuda Resident Jailed For Killing Stepfather

March 23, 2012

A former Bermuda resident who killed his stepfather by stabbing him 41 times when a long-running family feud boiled over was yesterday [Mar. 22] jailed for 11 years in the United Kingdom.

British media outlets are reporting [1] [2] Nathan Vaughan-Jones, 34, attacked 63-year-old Nigel Ross in the garden of his sister’s home in South Chailey, East Sussex, in March last year.

He admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Maidstone Crown Court in January. The judge accepted that Mr. Vaughan-Jones’s actions were not premeditated.

During the trial, the court heard Mr. Vaughan-Jones [pictured] suffered from bouts of depression and had a fraught relationship with Mr Ross, who was described as “controlling”.

Days before the stabbing, Mr. Vaughan-Jones had returned to Britain from Bermuda, where he lived with his wife. His return coincided with concerns he had heard about Mr Ross’s behaviour towards other relatives, the court heard.

Passing sentence, Judge Michael Lawson QC said: “Families are either the best and secure of places or they place strains that are unacceptable.”

Defence counsel Michael Wolkind QC said Vaughan-Jones was a “truly exceptional” man who had expressed “deep remorse and sadness” for the killing.

Helen Ellwood, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said two psychiatrists had accepted Vaughan-Jones was suffering from diminished responsibility.

  2. This Guy Don't Even Look Like A Killer says:

Cheeesh he stabbed is step daddy 41 times ! That’s some horror movie type of shyt! He was VEX! Days before the stabbing, Mr. Vaughan-Jones had returned to Britain from Bermuda ;I should have tried to reason with ya boy when he was here. He just needed a nice Bermuda fish sandwhich and a nice ice cold Dark and Stormy and he wouldn’t have done it seriously!

  3. The Truth... says:

There are circumstances to this story, please be mindful of your commments. Nath is an exceptional man who was driven over the edge.

    • OMG says:

What is so exceptional about a man who kills???

      • trawling says:

God ordered lots of people to be killed, I bet you think hes exceptional.

    • Ganja Mon says:

  4. Curious George says:

  5. This Guy IS AN ANIMAL A COLD BLOODED KILLER! says:

I Hope that he is NEVER ALLOWED to come back to BERMUDA when he is released! We have enough of our own murderers and we definitelty don’t need this MONSTER “Nathan Vaughan-Jones” hanging around. I don’t care how “COOL” or “NICE” people say you are! Your ACTIONS contradict that!41 times Your a MONSTER and BERMUDIANS DO NOT WANT YOU HERE EVER AGAIN!!! Stay out there FOREVER !

    • If only you knew says:

He is not a monster. There were not 41 stab wounds. Picture your child being the victim of sexual abuse and then tell me how you would react. You are only given part of the story.

    • Bermudian says:

I’m Bermudian. I wish he was back here!!
‘This Guy IS AN ANIMAL A COLD BLOODED KILLER!’, question for you, what would you do if someone was touching your five year old son in a sexual way? Me personally, I would of done a lot worse then Mr. Vaughn-Jones did. That dirty old man would of been tortured for some time before I killed him!!!

  6. tricks are for kids says:

People that do not understand the “functions of behavior” WOULD find “truly exceptional”, “cool” or “nice” as odd in describing a person that has stabbed another 41 times. As a Behavioral Therapist I can tell you that the words used can very well be accurate and it does not necessarily mean that they are a monster either.

  7. How Could u Defend This!! says:

@ TRICKS ARE FOR KIDS, What World or Planet are you livin in? I don’t have to be a Behavioral Therapist or have a PH.D to KNOW that this guy is a MONSTER! I can’t believe that you are trying to justify or defend this mans BAD BAD BEHAVIOR.ANYONE THAT CAN STAB ANYBODY NOT ONCE NOT TWICE NOT 3 TIMES but 41 TIMES IS A MONSTER and an ANIMAL and if you can defend or justify this behavior you are just as sick as him!

    • tricks are for kids says:

@ how could u defend this….always one person per post who has to result to name calling or “put downs”(you are just as sick as him!) to TRY and get their point across…sorry if YOU PERCEIVED that because I said the words used to describe him can quite possibly be true with defending him. No where in my comment do I defend him..Fact is Fact and like I said, “People that do not understand the “functions of behavior” WOULD find the words “odd” that were used to describe him…….sorry if you don’t understand…..

  8. cant believe it says:

please so guys that rape young boys can be exceptional in character,, or what about rapist?? or pedos??

  9. LaVerne Furbert says:

Was he a migrant worker in Bermuda, or an expatriate?

    • Mad Dawg says:

LaVerne, you never stop trying to reach new lows do you. You are such a total fb its unbelievable. I can’ t think of a lower life form than you. When I look up “low class trash” in the encyclopedia there is a picture of you.

      • Wintersun says:

Honestly, “mad dog”, your comments towards Ms. Furbert are totally out of line and inappropriate.

Before you assume, no I am not an advocate for Ms. Furbert.

Many comments people state regarding any issue may cause us to agree or disagree with the statement being posted by that individual, but in relation to Ms. Furbert’s post in this article I do not see anything to suggest justification for you to come to your demeaning stature of her.

I too may disagree, or agree, with Ms. Furbert or any other poster on some topics, but you are clearly not referring to Ms. Furbert’s post with reference to this article, but you are clearly displaying a personal attack against Ms. Furbert, and therefore should be refrained from doing so in future posts and focus on the topic at hand.

Get your own personal issues together, or don’t post…and don’t try to justify free speech, cause you have clearly crossed the line.

        • Mad Dawg says:

Ask yourself what the reason was for her question. Was it to get an answer?

No. It was to make a point that the person was (when he lived here), an expat. At the same time she threw in the phrase ‘migrant worker’ because it’s the new ‘anti expat’ label.

There was no other reason for her post. She made the post for the purpose of being nasty, as she often does.

So what do we do? Humour her? Play along, again? Let her get away with her nasty swiping? Or do we call her out once in a while and tell her what we really think?

While you’re coming to the defence of this particular damsel, bear in mind that her tactic when she disagrees with a point is always to attack the messenger, not to discuss the point. Her other usual way of doing things is to drop a poison comment, and then disappear.

          So I guess I didn’t apologise.

    • The nitty gritty says:

WOW I would think it’s enough for you to delight in knowing he’s white and a murderer, why confuse us with this diversion?

      • Maddog says:

I wonder who that expatriate killed in Bermuda.

        • If only you knew says:

No one. He killed no one in Bermuda.

        • Mad Dawg says:

You really are a sicko. Which shouldn’t surprise anyone, really.

    • Rick Rock says:

LaVerne, was the woman accused of killing a baby a migrant worker or an expatriate, or a Born Bermudian, out of interest?

  10. Know the whole story says:

It is sad to see people carry on about something they really do not know anything about! This man is an extraordinary person, that unfortunately got push over the edge! You all have no idea what happened an there for have no right to judge! He is not a monster and anyone who knows him knows the truth! He is a wonderful husband, uncle and dear dear friend. Please be more mindful of your comments as you have no idea what the circumstances are!!!

    • tricks are for kids says:

@ “know the whole story”……as you can see from my previous posts, without even knowing the story I understand where you are coming from…..

  11. If only you knew says:

People base their comments on the edited story they are fed. I say edited however some would say it was a lie. The writer of this article clearly was not in the court room to hear the TRUTH…I was!
Nathan Vaughan-Jones did not stab Mr Ross 41 times. The court was told he had 41 injuries, most of which were bruises and abrasions. The author of the article fails to say how many injuries Nathan had. He too had many.
The author also fails to include any details as to what led to this. What were the grounds of provocation? I was in court, I know. How would you react to a child in your family being molested by someone they trust?

  12. Unspoken says:

This is just plain old sad to read these poor a** comments. Us as Bermudians are quick to point a figure and say nasty stuff . How about you turn your finger around and point at yourself or the people in your family that run wild and cause havic upon bermuda. please dont act like your all saint because your not. He did do something wrong he knows it he dont need your smart comments.

  13. Observer says:

So basically, people that have a grudge on someone or don’t see eye to eye have a right to kill? And yes he is an animal to the extent that he could not control his actions or emotions. Also his defence is weak. Nothing pops into someone’s head to kill someone. These seeds were long planted in his head.

As the saying goes” What you think about your actions will follow. Positive or negative.

Correct me if I am wrong but are we not to take the law into our own hands?

    • Unspoken says:

      @ observer

Dont act all high and mighty. You dont know what he was thinking at the time or before he acted. Dont you get mad? Dont tell me your never been in a fight our even lashed out at anybody. How I see it we all animals cause we preying on him. It only takes 1 second to kill some one . As may people do they speak before the think . so why couldn’t he have reacted before he thought about it.

  14. Pastor Syl says:

I don’t know what I said in a previous post that had it removed, but I repeat, the sadness in this man’s eyes touches me deeply. It was clear from the report that he felt provoked beyond endurance and that his reactions related to attacks on someone else toward whom he felt protective.

I have to wonder what has happened in the lives of those whose posts are so bloodthirsty and cruel. Where did y’all learn to be so hard?

    • Gvt Mechanic says:

I couldn’t agree with you more Pastor Syl. God bless.
