OBA Politicians Donate 5% Of Salary

March 13, 2012

Last month One Bermuda Alliance MPs and Senators agreed to cut 5% of their parliamentary salaries and donate it to a worthy cause, and recently donated almost $3,000 to charity.

That cut was duly made for the first time on March 1, by OBA legislators for the month of March, and the OBA has now presented its first cheque to the Rev Nicholas Dill of St John’s Church, for their Pembroke Parish community evening meal programme at St. Augustine’s Church.

In the photo below, courtesy of Ras Mykkal, OBA Leader Craig Cannonier presents Rev Nicholas Dill of St John’s Church in Pembroke, and Rev Musa Daba of St Augustine’s Church with a cheque for $2,875 to help in their programme of providing a meal a week to those who want one at St Augustine’s.

Rev Dill heads a group of colleagues and volunteers who, since they began their programme in September 2010, have been providing a meal for those in need at St Augustine’s Church in Pembroke every Wednesday evening. Attendance at this event has grown to about 100 people every week, individuals and families coming from as far away as Southampton.

OBA leader Craig Cannonier said: “The OBA believes that this kind of assistance, given unconditionally to families who need it, is the best kind of charity for these troubled times.

“We would like the volunteer workers who keep this programme going to know how much we admire what they are doing. Hopefully, the example they set will not go unnoticed in the community.”

    Politics at its best…hilarious.

    • strugglin' onion says:

Good for the OBA, so where’s your donation “HAHA”??? When I have a little spare cash, which is not often due to this disappointing incompitent government, I donate to PALS. I would love to see all MPs take a cut, as they expect all civil servants to take a cut but not themselves.

      • Maddog says:

How can anyone truly believe what he has to say about moving Bermuda forward, seriously! For a man to advocate loudly and strongly during a televised debate that, and I paraphrase ‘I had a great public education’ and, when challenged by fellow guest Mr Anthony Richardson of the distinguish PLP and I quote ‘you sure’ to which Mr Cannonier replied “yes”. Then he, Mr Cannonier, then proceeded to challenge the distinguished member’s lack of preparedness for the debate, when in fact the truth is that Mr. Cannonier spent a lot of his (secondary) educational years at Bermuda Institute, which is a private school. His memory suddenly returning later when a caller refuted his claim, only then that he clarified and spoke the truth. Was that a slip of the tongue, a slip in memory, or a lie? Tell me, if any person who enters the political arena that presents his or her resume to the public that can’t remember what schools they attended where private or public. It speaks volumes on its own basics. The first instance anywhere in the world I ever have heard of. Especially a would be leader. Was he telling the truth, the public will decide that!

        • Family Man says:

Or accepts honourary degrees and insists on using those letters behind their name as if they actually earned it.

Dumb. Or is is abbreviated Dhuml.

And which one of your “honourable” (that cracks me up) PLP members said they attended Harvard? Turns out they went to a two week summer course on the Harvard campus.

      • Itsaboutallofus says:

Many people donate to many charities…they don’t always take a photographer and issue a press release though!

        • Hmmmm says:

Yes they do, because this is of national interest, following up on a promise made to the public. They areva party that are approachable, inclusive and open.

          • Understanding says:

National Interest. You cannot be serious can you. The amount of money that is donated daily is in the national interests. Tithes to churches, donations to schools.

The milkman, the gasman, and the Gman give $3,000 to a charity (and take a phtotgrapher) and you all clap up and down and say its in the NATIONAL INTEREST.

            Silly season has truly begun!

  2. Bermudian Overseas says:

    Good example for Bermudians!

  3. LOL (original TM*) says:

At least they kept there word (or promise). Which is more than I can say about some others.

LOL free this free that……uh bills to pay……means tested……… forget about it……

  4. Real Talk (original) says:

I’m sure the people who are fed off that $3,000 will be grateful. A good move by the OBA to put their money where their mouths are… It’s a ‘show me’ world.

(and no, I’m not an OBA cheerleader, just sick and tired of politicians screwing the little guy)

    • strugglin' onion says:

Totally agree with you “Real Talk”!

  5. Bermy's Finest says:

Yes, the kept their promise to garner votes and just like all the other politicians they to will become liars!

    • Now & later says:

After the election they going to take their 5% and bank it, all this just to win votes. LMAO

      • Al says:

After the election they will always be at risk of losing the next one so they will be on their best behaviour for a long time.

  6. True Blue says:

They cut their salary and all they came up with was $3,000? That comes from a salary of $60,000 which sounds like only one politician (not Politicians) cut their salary to me. Looks like they are just begging for votes. Not working for me.

    • Truth (original) says:

That’s 3,000 more than any PLP MP. I guess you would prefer no loaf, than a piece of it. Bear in mind that PLP MPs get paid more and give nothing.

It is amazing that you are satisfied with that.

      • Understanding says:

Ahh, so PLP MP’s don’t bring the camera to the donations but its 3000 more than any PLP MP. OK buddy, do you even beleive the crap you write.

The people in the communities know, hence the PLP don’t need to call the press everytime they make a donation.

If you do NOT thing this is political posturing of the worst kind (using a church) then i have a bridge to sell you.

        • Hmmmm says:

If you think this is wrong in any way, then please refund them out of your own salary. Of course this if public, they promised the public they would do this. They are now showing the public they have done it and are doing it…..Come on flip flop PLP, slow to cut your own salaries…love the way the PLP have yet to do anything that hurts their own pockets…Hell, COG hires a financial consultant at 250k because she knows nothing about Finance and fiscal policy. We are paying Twice for this role!!!

          • summer lover says:

LOL and this consultant is….ahem….82 years old! shouldn’t he have retired at 65?
The PLP is still trying to find ways to make us pay for their overspending. How can I support the decision to take my pension for an entire year and then I HAVE to retire at 65? I won’t even get the chance to get that year back…..
At least the OBA is finding constructive ways to help others.

        • Rick Rock says:

Understanding, perhaps you could explain this to the rest of us:

          http://bernews.com/2011/09/plp-make-donation-to-miss-bermuda/

Press Release, Photographer, video, tv, the works. To make sure we all knew they gave $1,500 to a beauty contestant.

Explain to us why this is better than giving $3,000 a month to charity.

    • Just the Facts says:

It’s how much one month’s cut of 5% adds up to. Expect a similar donation every month.

      • Just the Facts says:

Meant 5% of all salaries. There are only 10 MPs and 3 Senators.

    • M.T. Pockets says:

You obviously are so blinded you can’t read! The deduction was made on March 1st, not from their annual salary but ‘for the month of March’. My guess is they will do it again next month and every month. So quick to find fault, so slow to comprehend.

    • jt says:

Math is not your strong point. Are you an elected PLP member?

    • Pastor Syl says:

That was one month’s cut, if I understand it correctly, not the year. Next month, they’ll probably donate to another worthy cause – maybe Age Concern’s BELCO Assistance Fund, which is where my tithe went this paycheck. I only tell you this because I think our seniors need every bit of help they can get.

    • Real Talk (original) says:

      That’s a monthly salary mate… Keep up.

    • Hmmmm says:

      5% of one month salary.

What is not working for you is:

      1)the PLP,
      2) the PLP
      3) incase you didn’t get it yet… The PLP

    • yup says:

      @ True blue:
      1. Annual salary $60,000 = 5,000 per month (before deductions).
      2. Even if they are doing it to garner votes it still does not make it invalid. By saying that you are committing the motive fallacy. In case you are unfamiliar I will outline it briefly.

Motive Fallacy: This fallacy occurs when an arguer Criticizes a person or group’s motivation for offering a particular argument, claim or action, rather than examining the worth of the argument, claim or action itself. Attacking the Motive follows the pattern:

      1. X is biased or has questionable motives.

      2. X’s argument, claim or action should be rejected.

If you would like a better description read Jamie Whyte’s book Crime’s Against Logic. This book outlines this fallacy as well as many other fallacies, many of which have been used by PLP blind loyalists to “prove” their point (though not worth the pixels they are written on).
However, I can see your reason for the having to commit the fallacy. In a nutshell, PLP blind loyalists are basically in a bind being that OBA is leading by example and PLP is flipflopping. Nonetheless, it just shows desperation.

      • My two cents says:

Wow this describes exactly what the PLP was doing to Stuart Hayward every time he expressed concern over the PLP giving out SDOs to further destroy the environment. Glad to have a name for it now. Thanks so much.

  7. Family Man says:

And the PLP/BIU party are going to form a committee to look into the feasibility of doing something similar in due course. After a few breakfast meetings at Tuckers Point Club they should have a rough draft and they’ll make a further announcement at the same time as they announce groundbreaking on the new Ritz Carlton five star hotel.

  8. Pastor Syl says:

One more point – it is good to see something positive coming on the political front, good to see politicians keeping their promises, whether or not it is for votes, I appreciate that some politicians are willing to share in the grief of salary cuts.

  9. Truth (original) says:

    Leading by example. Awesome.

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

Well now PLP MPs, its your turn. What is it going to be? 5% from each of you too? Not likely.

Ah well, I guess we will see smiling OBA faces making a donation somewhere next month meanwhile you lot will be hiding under your rocks somewhere hoping the embarassment will go away.

  11. Cancer says:

I wanna see what specialgirl and Laverne are gonna post about this! Lol !!! Watch this space guys…

    • jt says:

Cancer – if they post, you know full well what they will post. Anyone familiar with their blogging knows. Certainly doesn’t take a genius – that is for sure.

      • Mountbatten says:

Empty barrels like L.F and SG4U make the most noise ,except when people who refuse to think as they do , actually accomplish something positive .

  12. Itsaboutallofus says:

Hilarious. They decide to do something good, and of course they have to issue a press release about it. So much for doing good just because it is the right thing to do.

    • Shaking the Head says:

Just remember that the PLP called a Press Conference with about 10 people to announce they had donated $1,500 to Jana Outerbridge so she could buy some clothes to wear to Miss World 2011 (she came 76th). At least the OBA is giving their money to local needy causes.

    • jt says:

You mean like 0% financing good?

    • Hmmmm says:

What are you stupid. Of course the public should know this. What a dumb, pathetic statement.

  13. Cancer says:

@Itsaboutallofus – have the flipflop PLP done anything at all? The answer is a solid No!!!! They may now… After they see the OBA do as they say they will do! So the fact that this made the press must embarrasses you and the flipPLoP huh??? Lol

  14. Cancer says:

Just so you guys know the OBA donated to Jana Outerbridges cause also – they just didn’t want to make a public issue about the gesture… So there you go…. Haters!

  15. Cancer says:

@JT – I would have thought specialgirl and Laverne would have posted something by now. I guess the two of them must be embarrassed by the PLP and working out some sort of blind loyalist stregedy plan for their response! Lol

    • Real Talk (original) says:

Just a word of advice, Cancer (not that you’ve asked for my advice) but the laying in wait for a pro-PLP blogger to comment negatively on this stormy is no different from what you accuse the PLP of doing (ie, jumping at every opportunity to comment negatively on something). And it’s certainly not endearing your party to those of us who are fed up with the back and forth. Let’s not turn this thread into one of *those* kind of threads. Please. Let the gesture speak for itself… sometimes that is all that’s needed.

      • Understanding says:

I don’t think s/he gets it. The negativity flows naturally.

Funny thing is s/he probably can’t vote.

        • Andrew says:

          @ Understanding,

“The negativity flows naturally…s/he probably can’t vote”

So your response to your perception of negativity is to attack the messenger with xenophobic statements?

The unfunny thing is you probably CAN vote.
          [sarcasm]

    • Sherlene says:

      Hi ,
I hope y’all remember when you point your fingers at someone their is 3 fingers pointing back at you.
Remember what you sow is what you reap.
One day you may want to be elected for something and no one had a kind word to say about you and wonder why i didn’t get chosen . Remember WHAT YOU SOW IS WHAT YOU REAP.
IF YOU CAN’T SAY A KIND WORD
BIT YOUR LIP & SAY NOTHING
      Sherlene

  16. Trident says:

    cancer is king here :-)

  17. Understanding says:

This smacks of desperation politics. Interesting how the OBA would try to politicise the church, what next? A cheap political stunt, which as most things that they do are as transparent as the water is paradise lakes.

  18. Cancer says:

@Real Talk (original) – I hear what your saying and I don’t mind taking critisism whether if it concerns me or the OBA as long as it’s constructive. But when you have those two that never can admit the plp has ever made some mistakes it’s difficult not to do payback! Once they fight fair I will fight fair but your words are acknowledged…maybe not heeded but acknowledged!

    • Understanding says:

Cancer, seriously fight fair… Hillarity. If the PLP cured cancer you’d complain they put doctors out of work.

      • Hmmmm says:

For me , if the PLP had, were or are doing a good job, there would be no cause for complain, but sadly they are destryoing Bermuda one day at a time. I honestly don’t care about this party or that. I just want a government that is working for Bermuda. If the OBA mess up, they will get it too.

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

I concurr. The problem with the PLP is that they lack integraty, hoesty and openess. Ask what happens to people in the party that are open about CC meetings and party news…. I say televise them and the OBA’s so non party people can see what they truely stand for and vote know what they are voting for……………….

          LOL

  19. Cancer says:

Lol Trident – now sometimes I have to give you respect !

  20. Cancer says:

Trident needs to come over to OBA camp.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Not unless Momma tells him to. That ain’t happnin.

  21. Sherlene says:

Ya, Candy store is open , You wouldn’t dart those doors any other time. When all those GUN SHOT was going on . What happen to the donation to help clean up 42nd. That old car UBP painted up made look like a brand new OBA . Still the same car and drivers.

    • Hmmmm says:

Nothing to do with this topic, you just failed the reality test. Well done OBA for delivering on your promise. Well done OBA for delivering on your promise exactly as promised and out of your own pockets. THANK YOU.

  22. Cancer says:

Suddenly plp folks wants Cancer to fight fair. Cancers words (the truth) finally hitting home!

  23. Coolieh says:

These responses over a charitable contribution are just pure madness…

    What’s wrong people?

You’re perpetuating polarization of our Community!

    STOP THE MADNESS!!!!!!!

    Pure insanity!!!!

We need a referendum to GET RID of party politics. Use referendums more frequently to decide major issues. There is technology to do this very cost effectively.

Too much power and control in just a few people is BAD!

    I vote, YES!

    God help us al!

    2Cents from Coolieh

    • Hmmmm says:

It is sad, the PLP through their hate have blinded folks and divided us. The OBA will bring Bermuda bqck together, whereas the PLP will fight to divide us.

      • Voice of Reason says:

        LMAO! Thats a good one.

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

Prove HMMMMMMMM wrong people are as divided as they have ever been in my life time with complete disreguard for others. The evidence is as clear as Bernews political stories.

          LOL

    • Understanding says:

I think the comments are more to do with a politicisation of a donation, and the church for that matter. I can’t imagine the anglican’s are pleased at being used for publicity.

      • Mad Dawg says:

Was Miss Bermuda pleased at being “used for publicity”?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Getting rid of party politics on this little rock certainly would be very nice but it is not going to happen anytime soon.

Bermudians have to do an awful lot of political maturing first & there is no sign of that.

    • My two cents says:

As long as people vote, there will always be party politics. That is all they need from you.

  24. OBA!!! says:

This is a great act of generousity and sacrifice!…

  25. Can't Take It Anymore says:

    YAWN!!!
