Par-la-Ville To Be Renamed Queen Elizabeth Park
The City of Hamilton announced it will host a renaming ceremony at Par-la-Ville Park on Saturday April 21, 2012 in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling said, “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we get to celebrate the diamond jubilee of a monarch.
“The City of Hamilton is pleased to announce it is fitting to mark this historic occasion by renaming Hamilton’s premier park and recreational area, Par-la-Ville Park, in honor of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II. The park will be called Queen Elizabeth Park.”
“The City will host a formal renaming ceremony and plaque unveiling on Saturday, April 21, 2012, on the grounds of Par-la-Ville Park at 4:00pm.
“Formal invitations have been extended to community leaders and the general public, especially the residents of our city, are invited to attend. The occasion will be highlighted with a fanfare from the Bermuda Regiment and musical selections from the North Village Band,” Mayor Gosling concluded.

One could say that “Par-La-Ville” doesn’t quite cut it (even though the name may bring back a few blurry images to some) but “Queen Elizabeth Park” …?

Why the hell should Bermuda glorify a person, born into privleged life and position, by brandishing BERMUDIAN public lands with a name which remind so many of DOMINANCE and the unequal relation of polities.

I think it’s a wonderful idea that Her Majesty’s subjects have decided to name a park after her. I’m sure H.E. will be there in his “pith helmet, feathers, and sword” to delight of all of the Royalists on the island.
Maybe we could even attract some tourists from the East Coast to come to Bermuda to participate in the renaming ceremony.

Dumbest post I’ve read in years. Bermuda isn’t going independent for years to come as there is waaaayyyy to much to lose in doing that. Please name one relevant reason to go independent. If you think negotiating power is the reason guess what you need something that others would negotiating with we have nothing we, produce nothing, we can’t feed ourselves, we would loss our EU passports, I believe with all the debt built up those we owe would call in the debts, our dollar would crash and Bermuda would once again remember what “struggle” really means. I see nothing positive from independence at all. Feel go crap like that won’t put food on the table, a roof over anyone’s head (ie the average person not talking about the elite politicians as this would become their summer home only).

In relation to posts like this, I think it’s important to remember that this is not the opinion of the average, right-thinking Bermudian. There are always outliers in every country.
Not that this post deserves a response, but if the PLP really wanted to, they could change the name of the park to anything they want. Parliament retains the power to decide on all matters, and they are certainly more powerful than the Corporation of Hamilton.
