BIU President: KFC Using “Backdoor Approach”

May 18, 2012

[Updated with video] Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert held a press conference today [May 18] to discuss the ongoing dispute with KFC Bermuda.

Mr Furbert said KFC is changing the name of the company from “KFCB” to “KFCO”, and changing the employee’s insurance policies on June 1.

“We are very concerned about that as right now we have a class agreement with KFC, and its with KFCB not KFCO,” said Mr Furbert.

Mr Furbert went on to say the staff were asked to sign a document today in order to get their new insurance policies, which he claimed was tying the insurance policy to the new company. He says he advised them not to sign them, as if they do they are “signing over their rights.”

“We believe this is a backdoor approach to get the employees to come under the new company,” said Mr Furbert. “We are very concerned about this situation, and how it appears that the parties are going to arbitration, but another party continues going off on another direction.”

back door KFCB KFCO you mean like BIU PHC?

  2. More with less says:

Beating you at your own game. Must suck

  3. allcloggedup says:

employees have to make a choice. Has the BIU capable of representing their interest? Looking at their recent behavior with handling Government employee issues, I would have to say no. Chris can twist governments arm to get his way but he can’t touch the 40 theives hahahahahahahahahah

  4. Malachi says:

So Chris, you are advising your staff to NOT sign the policies??

I guess you would have them without insurance. If the current policy expires at the end of May, and the name of the company has changed, then it is imcumbent on them to sign the new documents.

I often wonder whose interest you have in mind when you say some of the things you say.

  5. Concerned says:

Hey Hey Hey – the kettle calling the frying Pan – WHAT??? You should be leaving KFC Alone and concentrate on your club’s business, as it now looks as if the BIU will be the new owners (Chris Furbert, Owner/President Bermuda Investment Union Club)

  6. Wow says:

Someone said he is on the tourism board too wow unbelievable!!!

    • jt says:

Not more unbelievable than someone we know who is on the HRC.

      • Wow says:

        What’s the HRC?

      • Mad Dawg says:

Human Rights Commission. In Bermuda a self-confessed bigot who discriminates blatantly can get appointed by the Premier to the HRC. I guess some people’s human rights aren’t deemed to be important.

  7. Verbal Kint says:

I have the perfect solution to this stalemate. Make Chris Furbert the president of KFCB/O. They could all incorporate into a corporation known as BTBBIUPHCKFCB/O

    • Verbal Kint says:

I forgot BTUC. So that would be BTUCBTBBIUPHCKFCB/O overseeing the PSSF. That’s why Chris built such a big house, so they can all meet at his place.

  8. terry says:

Wonda how much the Uighurs play into this.
Stting on the Doc of the Bay plays a major role.
Watching the tide roll away, well..seaweed..legalise it.

  9. Truth is killin' me... says:

Chris…SORT OUT PHC…TO HELL WITH KFC…SORT OUT PHCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Mbaya Avunaye says:

Would be nice if the Tv Stations ran a caption in English when Chris Furbert speaks. Or could it be a bit of hot spicy KFC in his mouth?

    • summer lover says:

      LOLOLOLOL!! so true!

    • Opressed says:

Do the people in the front row get free Scott towels to stay dry??

    • pepper says:

I also have a hard time understanding brother Chris, he needs to calm down he is always so angry !!!!!!!!!! Chris look for another job…

  11. Finger Licking Good says:

Chris Furbert not everything a company does is a conspiracy. Why is it if its not done on your terms its harmful to the employee OMG man get a grip. I think the workers need to look at that insurance policy etc and make their own decision because this man seems to exacerbate every situation. Its either his way (BIU) or the highway.

  12. Blankman says:

So Chris, when the workers don’t sign so they don’t have insurance and one of them has a traffic accident are you going to pay their medical bills?

    • DIVIDED says:

I know Chris, and he is a gambler at heart who likes to keep his cards close to his chest. I would bet that when he shows his cards he will show a full house and he takes you all down and make you apologize.Expect to hear that he has simply put the KFC workers under the BIU insurance plan until they sort things out. Members benefits in action! United we stand!

      • Liars says:

your divided because your a racist idiot

        • Have a Cold One says:

Why would you say such a thing.. you moron.

      • star man says:

I believe the BIU Insurance Plan is why KFC decided not to renew their contract with the Union in the first place. Look into it, don’t believe everything Chris says….

      • Verbal Kint says:

Yeah, he’s a poker player. He has nothing left but bluff. And he has spent all his chips. My bet is when he shows his hand (if he is ever forced to) it is gonna be a handfull of rags. Nothing. Nada. But that’s just me.

  13. Mountbatten says:

Them grease buckets sure are slippery .

  14. Finger Licking Good says:

If Chris Furbert is on the tourism board OMG heaven help us. Watch out cruise ships lines hell be coming after you because you are trying to shut down Bermudas tourism industry (tongue in cheek) its a conspiracy, we must boycott the cruise ships..LMAO!

  15. Mbaya Avunaye says:

Can someone please tell me why the Super Market owned and operated by the B.I.U had to close it’s doors?

    • Verbal Kint says:

      Because it failed.

    • Liars says:

cause they had to “operate in the real world” hahaha

    • Family Man says:

Hard to believe a grocery store closed init? Especially given the depth of intellectual talent within the BIU, their superior management skills and utmost financial integrity and ethics.

I’m sure they’ll make a better go of the BIU credit union. After all, a bank or credit union in Bermuda has to be license to print money.

      • Argosy says:

Sounds like the Gummint we’ve had since 1998! Wait….it’s the same people!

Same results. Unable to operate in the real world and we’re broke!

        Remember “….make it happen”?

It’s happened. Are you better off and happy??

    • pebblebeach says:

Probably because the Proprietors could not manage a simple business model…
