Free Wi-Fi In Hamilton For Bermuda Day

May 23, 2012

The City of Hamilton announced the launch of a Wi-Fi network available throughout the City of Hamilton, providing high speed internet access to visitors and residents. The WiFi service is the result of a joint venture with TeleBermuda International Limited (TBi).

Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge stated, “I am pleased to announce that the City of Hamilton is launching a Wi-Fi Network with full city coverage. The Wi-Fi service will enhance the experience of visitors and workers in the City of Hamilton and will be formally launched in June.

“As part of the testing phase and given the large number of people expected in the City tomorrow for the Bermuda Day activities, TBI has opened the wireless network to allow free access throughout the day.

“The objective of the Beta testing is to ensure the system is fully operational, robust and can easily handle large numbers of people using the service at any given time.”

Mayor Outerbridge added, “Once the formal testing period has been completed, the service will be available to anyone who needs temporary or long-term internet access while in Hamilton.

“This is an ideal service for visitors to Bermuda, cruise ship staff together with anyone who may work in the City and needs to ensure they have access to email and the internet. We are finding that more and more people want internet access without being confined to an office and desk.

TBI President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Gregory Swan added, “Similar to the network which is currently operational throughout Dockyard, TBi has installed a Wi-Fi network which will allow anyone in the City with a Wi-Fi enabled device to be in touch while visiting, working, shopping or dining in the city.

Mr. Swan added, “We are happy to open the Wi-Fi network, on one of the biggest Bermuda holidays, Bermuda Day. We anticipate many people will be in Hamilton, watching the runners and then the parade.

“This is an ideal time to encourage people to bring their laptops, tablet devices and even their cellphones to log on during the beta testing period. It will give TBi an opportunity to closely monitor our network and provide the public with free internet access. The beta test will run for 12 hours, from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

Mayor Outerbridge concluded, “Once the testing phase has been completed, the service, which is provided by the City of Hamilton and supported by TBI will be available for purchase on daily, weekly and monthly rates.

“I thank former Mayor Charles Gosling and his team, together with the Edward Benevides, the City of Hamilton Chief Operating Officer and Secretary, who had the foresight to start this initiative. We are now seeing the results of their work.”

    For a price!!!

  2. Winnie says:

Kudos for bigging up the previous administration, most time credit would have been taken for work not done, good start Mr Mayor.

  3. Tuba says:

    Should be free anyway…..

  4. The grass is not always greener says:

This is competition at its finest. There goes revenue for the cell companies. Way to respond to Digicel and CellOne. Let’s hope the cell companies don’t price fix data package services. Well played TBI.

    I hope it is sustainable.

  5. sharky says:

Go ahead and log onto this WiFi network and then try to make a phone call.
    No dice,won’t work.
How did TBI get a licence to sell this service?
I hope ypu have credit card handy because this “service” has only one goal….and thats to take your money.
What does Minister Bean say about this service????

  6. pebblebeach says:

wi fi should be free all over Bermuda…Cell companies are ripping customer off, especially when they bill you for roaming charges they say was passed to them by an overseas service provider, without details and only a $charge…

I was away for a few weeks, disabled my cellular data on IPhone for entire overseas stay restricting all data to wi fi including e-mails, browsing and push notification…get a bill for $600 and when i query, they say too bad, no details records to support only a charge from an overseas provider and you must pay….

The simply ripping us off…hate them with a passion…

This is nice. TBI is making moves.

  8. UK says:

Does anyone know if the parade will be streamed live online?

    • Bernews says:

We plan to as we did last year, but don’t like to promise 100% as it can be a bit hit or miss streaming outside, but hopefully all goes well and we will carry the live video..

  9. elgreen says:

Just wasted an hour trying to use this service: hit and miss mainly – needed to be outdoors, connection drops or no internet access. My location – close to city hall. Tried both laptop and cell phone! I’m truly frustrated. Guess the ‘kinks’ have to be worked out. I will give it a try later.

    • theotherside says:

What is the network name? The 2 I see for Hamilton seem to take me to a login page. Does anyone know the username and password for free service today?

      • elgreen says:

        WiFiZONE by TBi

the site is an OPEN network – connect to it: you may need to scroll down a bit or near the end of the list

        • theotherside says:

Am connected, but it keeps putting me at a TBi splash page. Can’t get past the page without a username and password.

          • elgreen says:

Didn’t have that problem_sorry. Once I was connected I used Browsers IE or Google Crome to get on the Internet. It was erractic and I finally gave up. I’m now on Union Street and depending on which side of the house I am on I don’t see the connection or cannot connect when it is visible. I’m using a Cell service for these comments. Guess you get the quality of service you PAY for!

The headline says: “Free Wi-Fi In Hamilton For Bermuda Day”
The penultimate paragraph says “Once the testing phase has been completed, the service, …will be available for purchase on daily, weekly and monthly rates.”
That’s all you need to know, the rest is flufff.
