Fundraising Cash Stolen From Dale Butler’s House

May 18, 2012

Burglars broke into PLP MP Dale Butler’s home and stole $600 which had been raised in a bake sale to help assist a local band attend the Havana Jazz Festival next year.

The break-in occurred at Mr Butler’s Angle Street home sometime from 8am to 11am, while his two stepsons were home sleeping.

Mr Butler said, “Nobody is immune from a break-in. While my house is basically secure it is not a prison or fort. It is a basic home with basic locks. I feel fortunate to have been avoided all of these years.

“The first break-in ever of our household came with two children still asleep and a hunt for money. I will replace the money raised at a bake sale for the Giant Steps Band. That part is easy. But trying to forget the violation of our privacy is a lasting memory keeping us awake and ever vigilant.

“It is most unfortunate that all of our collective work to develop a good society sometimes goes to nought with activities like this. But thank God it does not happen everyday and most of us are good people respecting and following our laws,” concluded Mr Butler.

A police spokesperson said, “Inquiries are ongoing into a reported burglary that occurred at an Angle Street, Pembroke residence on Monday, May 14th 2012.

“Detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Angle Street area between 8:50am and 11am that day.

“Any witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Detective Constable Seymour Foote at the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.”

Your stepkids slept right through til 11am on a Friday? Was there any evidence of tampering with your “basic locks” (ie. evidence of someone actually breaking in)?

I like you, Mr. Butler. I can’t help but wonder…

@David Henry: The stepsons are adults in their late 20′s and are visiting here from the Philippines. There’s a time difference, and they were probably still on Philippines time even though they’re in Bermuda. As it would have been night-time in the Philippines, they’d be sleeping even if it was daytime here if their bodies hadn’t adjusted yet. Filipino people tend to be very honest, in my opinion, and I doubt that these men would take the chance of breaking the law, especially in a foreign country, and especially from their own family (they are also very family oriented).

Someone probably knew he’d raised the funds and decided to come and get it. That’s just the way things are these days; nowhere is off-limits.

Tongue-in-cheek I agree with your comments 100%. Just last week I dropped an envelope with cash in it outside of the supermarket. A very kind Filipino gentleman came running after me to give me the envelope. It had a window in it, so he could clearly see it contained cash but he didn’t hesitate to return it. It was only about $100, but I had to do shopping for my elderly neighbour which would have to come out of my pocket if I had lost it. He could have kept it, but as you state by nature they are very honest people. I don’t see why people would interpret this as an “inside job” when that clearly isn’t the case.

@ Dale Butler: Even you my friend are not immune to the scourge we have on this island with drug addicted burglars. You are in a position of power. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!PS I don’t know how your stepsons didn’t hear their house getting broken into. You must have a big house?

  7. Malachi says:

..it’s a good thing Mr. Butler can sell a few fishcakes to cover the loss! :)

Having been the victim of a breakin seven years ago on a Sunday morning, while my mum was a church & I was away . . . I feel for Dale. You just feel violated that some SOBs thieves have wandered into your home & turned it upside down for anything they can walk out with. The SOBs that broke into my place were druggies that had just been released from Bermuda’s finest hotel, Westgate, so much for rehab!!!
