Photos: 2012 Santo Cristo Dos Milagres Festival

May 13, 2012

[Updated with additional photos] Bermuda’s Portuguese community came together today [May 13] to celebrate a centuries old tradition that originated in the Azores in the 17th century. The “Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres” [Festival of the Christ of Miracles], sees a solemn procession through Hamilton with participants walking on a carpet of flowers set down beforehand.

The Santo Cristo statue is carried from St Theresa’s Cathedral along Cedar Avenue, Dundonald Street, past BAA and back to the Cathedral. The Somerset Brigade Band provided music as the red-caped men, clergy and children in special costumes walked through Hamilton followed by members and friends of the island’s Portuguese community.

Awesome. Hats off to the Portuguese Community for comming together like this and embracing their culture, religion and traditions. I wish I had known so I could have taken some pictures!

Imagine what we could do if we put our differences aside and left politics out of most of our conversations..

It’s great to see the Portuguese community still stands strong & shares their culture with all in Bermuda. Bermuda has benefited greatly from what the Portuguese have done here & they have done it regardless of the discrimination, segregation & other ill treatment they first encountered on this island. We could learn much from the Portuguese community because they have never shown spite or sought retribution for mistreatments & instead have persevered to meld with Bermuda’s population & contribute to what our culture has become. It seems strange to me that we don’t embrace the Portuguese dancers as part of our cultural blend & invite them to perform as we do the Gombeys.
