Bermuda’s Arantxa King has been accepted into London 2012 Olympics as an unqualified athlete in the long jump, Bermuda Track & Field president Donna Watson said. “We had to submit a form with the deadline last Friday and she has been accepted.

“We are very excited and so is Arantxa and her mom, Branwen Smith-King as we sent it to them this morning,” said Ms Watson. ” Arantxa still is trying to reach the standard and will be traveling along with Tre [Houston] and Aaron [Evans] to the National Championships in Trinidad.”

Ms King, who represented Bermuda in the 2008 Olympics, has won medals at the Carita Games, CAC Games and Pan American Junior Games. She is the 2005 World Youth Champion, and a three-time Massachusetts state champion.

The list of athletes that are scheduled to represent Bermuda in the 2012 London Olympics thus far include Tyrone Smith and Arantxa King in track and field, Tyler Butterfield and Flora Duffy in the triathlon, Jesse and Zander Kirkland in sailing, Roy Allan Burch in swimming and either Jillian Terceria or Patrick Nisbett will be selected for equestrian.

Some of the island’s other elite athletes also still have a chance of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics including swimmers Kiera Aitken and Lisa.Blackburn, sprinter Tre Houston, 800m specialist Aaron Evans and middle distance runner Lamont Marshall.

In addition, Jessica Lewis has qualified in the 100m and 200m for the 2012 London Paralympic Games, and still hopes to achieve the qualifying standard in the 400m.

Go Arantxa! Use this as a learning experience and take it all in! Do your best and represent Bermuda well! I know you will!

If our athletes struggle to make the minimum (B) standard why are we sending them? seems to me that money would be better spent on preparing others for future events where they have a realistic chance of success. we dont have much funding so we should be prudent in how we spend it!

Why is it always about cost? What about experience and exposure?
