Bermuda’s Olympic Swimmer In Action Tomorrow

August 1, 2012

As most Bermudians focus on the cricket game tomorrow [Aug 2], one Bermudian will have his focus set strictly on swimming as Roy Allan Burch is set to make his Olympic appearance in London. The 26-year-old swimmer will compete in the 50m freestyle, with the heats set to get underway at 6am Bermuda time tomorrow.

He will be swimming in Lane 4 of Heat 4 alongside Rahman Mahfizur of Bangladesh, Kareem Ennab of Jordan, Shehab Younis of Egypt, Barry Murphy of Ireland, Luke Hall of Swaziland, Chakyl Pfiffer Camal of Mozambique and Zachary Payne of the Cook Islands.

This will be Burch’s second Olympic appearance, having competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the Men’s 100 Metres Freestyle. He is the holder of multiple Bermuda records, and has represented the island at the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games and numerous other contests.

Burch will be the third of Bermuda’s eight strong team to start competition in the 2012 London Olympics. He follows after sailors Jesse and Zander Kirkland, who are sitting in 19th place in the Olympic 49er class with six races down and nine more to go. In addition, Bermudian Jenaya Wade-Fray has played two games as part of Great Britain’s Women’s Basketball team.

Long jumper Tyrone Smith is scheduled to compete on Fri Aug 3, triathlete Flora Duffy and equestrian Jillian Terceria both compete on Sat Aug 4, while triathlete Tyler Butterfield and long jumper Arantxa King will compete next week. See all our Olympic coverage here.

You can blame the Caribbean IMC coverage for that. They just are not able to provide a professional feed. It is very annoying. Tonight I see VSB TV are playing highlights of the days events and not showing the boring in studio chit chat from the Jamaica that they have been showing so far. Why IMC would think people would prefer to listen to people nattering on about nothing for 2 hours every evening instead of the highlights of the day is beyond me.
