Pedal Cyclist Seriously Injured In Taxi Collision

August 3, 2012

A 51-year-old pedal cyclist was seriously injured in an accident involving a taxi at approximately 11.30am this morning [Aug 3] on South Road in Smiths. A physician happened to be in the area at the time and helped the cyclist until the ambulance arrived and transported him to hospital.

Police spokesperson Dwayne Caines said: “Police responded to a report of a serious road traffic collision that took place at 11:35am on South Road in Smiths in the area of St. Mark’s Church.

“It appears that a taxi was traveling east and a 51 year old Paget man was traveling west on a pedal cycle when they collided. A physician happened to be in the area and rendered first aid until the ambulance could be summoned.

“The Paget man was taken to KEMH where he is listed in serious condition. Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to contact police on 295-0011.”

    God bless his recovery !

  2. Ride says:

From the looks of that taxi the cyclist took quite a beating. The taxi is on the wrong side of the road to be travelling East. If that is the case I hope for criminal prosecution.

Actually there was a nurse there first….she was first on the scene and they worked together to do what they could and how was the taxi on that side of the road? Thanks to all the nurses who work side by side with just about everyone…Really hope the cyclist makes a good recovery…what a horrible thing to happen…Thank you Lord for having these two courageous people there when they were needed the most…

    • Mad Dawg says:

Thank goodness two competent people were there.

The taxi is on the wrong side of the road. Hopefully the police noticed….

    • I think you might not be aware the Bermuda being a former British colony they drive on the wrong side of the road there. And yes that taxi is on the wrong side of the road for Bermuda. The windshield damage indicates the cyclist was riding to the left as required by law.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

Of course everyone knows it is the sole fault of the pedal cyclist. It is a well known fact that taxi drivers OWN the road.

  5. Baileys bay says:

I hope the police obtain the taxi drivers cell phone records…I’m betting by the position of the taxi on the road that the driver was texting or dialing the phone when or just before the collision occurred.

If it is found that the driver of the taxi was either texting or dialing the phone I also hope the police/public prosecutors office charge the taxi driver with vehicular assault or similar rather than a slap on the wrist driving with due care charge.

However my expectation is that this taxi driver will be back on the road in no time at all….thats the way we roll here in Bermuda

  6. Things Are'nt Always As They Appear says:

I hope that the rider pulls through with no permanent injuries. To those of you who are ignorant enough to think that the point of impact is the final landing place of a vehicle, should give thought when posting comments. That’s what accident investigators are for; let them be the ones to give better determination as to what may have really occurred.

  7. Rard says:

    TAAA TA,

You may be right, but it’s doubtful. Bad Bermuda taxi drivers give all of them a bad name. Like the ones that overtake on corners on Harbour Road, with horrified tourists in the back. COME ON GUYS….SLOW DOWN!

  8. Slow Down Bda says:

We saw this accident and it looked horrific. I hope that the cyclist has since recovered. Is there an update on his condition? I am thankful for his sake that there were 2 competent people there able to help and administer aid promptly. We pray for a full recovery.
