Sandys 360 Recruiting Student Interns

August 30, 2012

Sandys 360 is currently recruiting students completing a degree programme at the Bermuda College or online for a variety of intern placements. These intern placements were created to help students develop skills to land a job, from the application process, to executing the job duties.

A spokesperson said, “The job market is not what it used to be in Bermuda. This past week, a number of local landmarks closed its doors for good; a clear example of how tough the economy is even on established businesses.

“The face of the workforce has changed. Whereas 10 -20 years ago, an employer would have hired a student fresh out of college and invested the time and money to train them to do a job exactly how it’s supposed to be. Now, employers expect new recruits to come with more than just a piece of paper. But therein lies the dilemma.

“Students can’t get hired without experience, and it’s hard to get real job experience without a job. Sandys 360 Marketing & Communications Coordinator, Stephanie Lee understands this dilemma very well. “Sandys 360 is designed to serve every facet of the community.

“We have programmes in place or being developed for every member of the community. This year, we hosted, 4 interns, Young Bermudians, completing degrees abroad, performing a variety of duties, from assisting with aquatics programmes, helping develop our Basketball Programmes, and working on the 2nd Anniversary Month of Celebrations.

“With the help and support of the 360 Team, we are offering students completing a degree programme at the Bermuda College, or through an accredited online university, the opportunity to gain real world work experience through a number of volunteer intern placements.

“Below are four areas I am look to engage. I am looking to engage 2 or 3 persons for each area. We have a few other areas in the works, including student photographers.”

“These placements are designed to help students develop skills to help acquire job”, the spokesperson continued.

“Everything, from the job application process, to goal setting on the job, to executing the duties themselves, is designed to build skills young professionals need to make it through the hiring process and eventually land their dream job.

“For example, one young professional emailed a resume; which was great, but a cover letter, proof of enrolment and portfolio, if one was available, was also required. If this was a job for HSBC, and all of the pre-requisites were not provided, that person’s resume would have gone straight into the trash.

“We insist on a rigorous recruitment process because employers are just as stringent on their requirements. They are not going to give recruits the benefit of the doubt anymore; you may be the best qualified person, but if you don’t apply properly, the employer in not going to acknowledge you. These internships will not only build employable skills, but provide skills to get hired.”
