TROIKA’s latest production ”Once On This Island” started last night [Aug 23], earning rave reviews from people in attendance. The show is directed by Steve Huntsman [Las Vegas], choreographed by Eric Bean Jr, the assistant choreographer is Kioshi Burgess, and the vocal/choral producer is Edith Caines.
The show started last night at the Ruth Seaton James Centre Auditorium, and continues this evening and tomorrow. Showtime is at 8pm. ”Excellent entertainment for both the eyes and the ears,” said one attendee last night, while another told Bernews: “I was so impressed, they were so professional.”
This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score.
In almost non-stop song and dance, the show tells the story of Ti Moune, a black peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island.
When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
