Swan: Government’s Silence ‘Unacceptable’

October 4, 2012

Discussions around the planned Park Hyatt Resort on the old Club Med site in St George’s continue, with the developer now saying work could begin by the end of 2012 while St George’s West MP Kim Swan said the “government remaining silent on the issue is totally unacceptable.”

The former Club Med hotel closed in 1988, and has not been used as a tourism resort since. It was imploded in 2008 and scheduled to become a Park Hyatt Hotel. In 2010 developer Carl Bazarian said that construction would begin in 2011, and the original plan called for the resort to open in 2012.

Yesterday developer Carl Bazarian told The Royal Gazette that construction on a new Park Hyatt resort could begin by the end of the year, and the hotel could be open by early 2015.

MP Kim Swan said: “The people of Bermuda must be asking themselves – who is running Bermuda?

“Especially after developer Mr. Carl Bazarian who is already in breach of his lease – and fresh on the heels of the Minister of Tourism’s statement that he mistakenly stated that Mr. Bazarian’s lease had been terminated – can fly to Bermuda and make an announcement about a scaled down plan for the Park Hyatt Development without showing any plans to the public or without any reference to the lease of 125 acres of public lands for 262 years and without a “Dickie Bird” from the government.

“We find that to be totally unacceptable and demonstrates the epitome of irresponsible governance on the part of the PLP government who have abrogated its duty to represent the interest of the people of Bermuda by continuing to remain silent on this important matter.

“My colleague Mr. Charles Swan has already identified that Mr. Bazarian is in breach of his lease, but the PLP government continue to treat this important matter with silence.

“It is important to remind the public that the PLP government were not willing to table and debate in the lease in the House of Assembly in 2008 as urged by the United Bermuda Party. The lease is separate is distinctly different to the Park Hyatt Act which was passed in parliament in 2008.

“For the developer to be making an announcement and speak on the Bermuda government’s disposition on the matter – whilst the government continue to remain silent – is totally unacceptable.

“We are less than 3 months before the Premier must call an election and the PLP Government are allowing Mr. Bazarian to speak for them is totally unacceptable,” concluded Mr Swan.

When asked, the Ministry of Tourism declined to comment.

C’mon Kim, we all know who is running Bermuda!

  2. Rockfish #2 says:

Where is E.Michael Jones? Is he still involved with Bazarian?

  3. OBA (Only Brings Austerity) says:

Kim must have very little knowledge of commercial transactions. If/when a deal is done you will then know what is going on. You can’t be updated on every discussion that makes no sense.

Why doens’t Kim Swan read the release from the minister last week: http://bernews.com/2012/09/park-hyatt-resort-agreement-terminated/

If there is an annouuncment to be made, I’m sure Kim will be invited to the press conference. Until then, keep firing releases to Bernews.

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

If there’s an announcement to be made?

You mean, if they announce another pre-election lie about a luxury hotel being built any minute now?

      • What Options says:

I don’t think anyone will believe an announcement without construction. people are hopeful, not dumb!

    • Mad Dawg says:

Onlybrings, you seem to enjoy being kept in the dark and being fed lies. I think I know hiw you will vote.

Par for the course. When will Bermudians say “enough is enough?”

  5. UK says:

Brown made himself loads of money running that country!

  6. Winnie Dread says:

Until I see taxis taking guest up the hill, then I will believe. Don’t start clearing a site and think I will be convinced, structure up guest arriving, then and only then. I will no longer be fooled.

  7. swing voter says:

Fishy fishy….major development update with no Government ministers in on it? Any other time, they are clamoring over each other for the photo op….hummmmmmmmmmm

  8. Opressed says:

He has all the PLP MP’s under a gag order. The less they say, the smarter they look. He doesn’t want to lose the election, it might lead to the winning party launching an investigation.

  9. It only hurts when I breathe................. says:

    Whats new?
Yet another PLP “we will not answer that question, or that one, or that one and no we dont answer that sort of question………………not answering that one, its a back to the plantation question !!!”, and a new little gem from Zane, ‘we should concentrate on quality of care not what the government (BHB) is doing with OUR MONEY and you paid him WHAT????!!!!”………..

Yet another example of PLP deception, lies and back room deals……….after all if they had nothing to hide they should shout it from the roof tops………..but they don’t – its conceal, conceal, conceal and hide and hide………..what does that tell all of us???!

Honesty seeks the light of day.
Deception and lies is always done in the dark.

  10. Vulpes says:

The hotel will never be built with Bazarian. The asset is the lease and the deal is to flip it with his local partner who shepherded it into place for them both to cash in on. He was down here to protect his deal which is threatened by unexpected possible regime change.

By the way, why are no politicians talking about the former Sonesta site – all set for a new beach front hotel to be built?
