Women Plead Guilty To Stealing Fake Hair

October 4, 2012

Two women appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [Oct 4], both charged with separate incidents of stealing artificial hair.

The first — a 20-year-old woman — pleaded guilty to stealing two packets of artificial hair valued at a total $120 from a salon on Reid Street.

Magistrate Juan Wolffe was told that around noon on 10th September, shop staff had seen the woman place certain items in her handbag. That when she was accosted by them, and was still inside the store, she admitted having the items in her possession.

Shop staff retrieved the items and ran them through the bar-code sales record system which showed that the items had not been purchased or paid for. Police were called and the young woman later admitted, to Police, that she had taken the items.

Saying that she was a young woman who hoped to pursue further education and training, that the shop had suffered no actual loss, and that she had a clean record, Duty Counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson asked that the young lady be given a Conditional Discharge.

Crown Prosecutor Cindy Clarke offered no strenuous objection and agreed that, under the circumstances, a Conditional Discharge could be considered.

Magistrate Wolffe remonstrated with the 20 year old asking her: “Why, in the first place did you do that?” In particular: “….why were you stealing something that was purely material?”

The Magistrate rejected her excuse that these were, in her words, ‘hard economic times’ and that she needed the hair to improve her appearance by telling her that she was already an attractive person.

The Magistrate ordered a Conditional Discharge, good for twelve months. He finished by telling her that: “I’m gonna’ remember your face. I don’t want to see it again in my Court.”

The second case saw mother-of-two Tamika Zuill, 31, of Sandy’s, also plead guilty to a charge of stealing two packets of artificial hair valued at a total $95. This happened on 11th September at Fadoo Hair on King Street.

The Magistrate was told by Crown Counsel that shop staff had seen Ms Zuill take the hair packets and that she left the store with them. Shop staff chased after her, shouted to her, and police were called and Ms Zuill later admitted to the theft.

Magistrate Wolffe noted she had prior convictions, while Ms Zuill said that she was sorry and that ”I go to church.” The Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report and that Ms Zuill should return to Court in November for sentencing.

    • Bernews says:

We get asked this with many conditional discharge stories….hopefully the below helps…

If you check back through all our stories, we don’t as policy name some people in Court – innocent victims, many witnesses, and some people under 21 for smaller offences [tiny amount of cannabis, stealing smaller items] who are first time offenders and get a conditional discharge.

The Court is giving them a second chance through the discharge, so we honour that most times, and hopefully the young people appreciate the chance and straighten up. Many do – some have went on to college, got GEDs, jobs even started volunteering – unfortunately some don’t….we have had 2 cases thus far of teenagers reappearing so we name them then as they had their chance.

Only young, first time offenders, with smaller charges, who get discharged we won’t name [well alleged sex offenders as well, but that's not our choice its the law] everyone else is named.

The 31-year-old was not discharged and will be sentenced, has been before the Courts on prior occasions [another incident she was convicted of involved face cream] so there is no reason we would not name her….

      • Free says:

Interesting, so that’s only your personal policy on reporting?

How come we can’t refer to previous matters in the comments if someone is in the news again – but you mention she has previous offences? Or is it only allowed if they were found guilty and sentenced of said previous offense(s)? Just asking.

  26. Uncle BOB says:

All they need is some Cactus and some Bob Marley and their hair will grow for free.

  27. CHINGAS! says:

I for one am all for this law when used correctly and not abused. But can someone please tell me why the police will wait at white hill gate and pull over Somerset Bridge Football time right after a training session? Is it that football is considered congregating and we are not allowed to do so?

  41. WayaDumb? says:

could have came to me and I would have giving her $20 for some HAIR !! or better than that !! cud have went down to Spicelands Stables and asked for some of the horses hair for free.

  42. BABS says:

Everyone makes a mistake at least once in their lives. It’s nice that Bernews respected that it was her first offence and gives peeps like that a chance by not posting her name. Too Bad Royal Gazette didn’t think like that.

  43. Pat says:

It is sad that people feel that they must take what is not theirs to impress others. I go church is a statement that highlights the fact that people will steal to look good on a Saturday or Sunday morning. If times are hard, you can’t afford to put ten percent in the offering plate and look fly too! LOL!
