‘Know Your Numbers’ Diabetes Seminar

November 7, 2012

The Bermuda Diabetes Association will host two ‘Know Your Numbers’ educational events in recognition of Diabetes Month 2012. The sessions have been developed especially for people living with diabetes and are free to attend due to sponsorship by the Argus Group.

Delivered by the charity’s Diabetes Educator, Sara McKittrick, the sessions will promote a better understanding of the impact that food, medication, activity and even stress have on blood sugar levels and explore why it is important for diabetes sufferers to know what their numbers are. Attendees will leave more informed about how to gain better blood glucose control levels within their target range.

The seminars will be held on Thursday, November 8, and Thursday, November 22 from 12.15pm to 1.30pm at the Chamber of Commerce Meeting Room at Albuoys Point, Hamilton. There are only 20 available spaces per seminar so interested parties are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible by calling 297-8427 or emailing bda@northrock.bm. Light healthy refreshments will be available following each presentation.

Sara McKittrick, Diabetes Educator, Bermuda Diabetes Association, says: “Diabetes is very common in Bermuda and a serious threat to the quality of life for so many. Keeping blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible can be a lifesaver.

“Tight control can delay or slow the progression of the long-term complications of diabetes. Diabetes is a widespread condition in Bermuda and around the world. According to recent statistics, as many as one in four Bermudians are living with or are at risk of diabetes.”

Alison Hill, Chief Executive Officer of the Argus Group, says: “These seminars will deliver valuable information to diabetes sufferers as self-monitoring blood glucose plays a major role in managing the disease.

“Argus decided to sponsor these important sessions so that they could be provided free of charge by Bermuda Diabetes Association. Diabetes is one of the biggest killers on the island and supporting this education programme is a key priority for Argus as one of Bermuda’s leading health insurance providers.”

The ‘Know Your Numbers’ seminars are part of a full calendar of events organised by Bermuda Diabetes Association to mark November as Diabetes Month. Throughout November the charity will be working to increase membership and raise awareness of the lifestyle changes that can prevent diabetes.
