Bermuda business leaders will participate in a three-part radio series on Magic 102.7 F.M., with the primary goal of educating Bermudians on the benefits of international business to all sectors of the community.
The series, airing 15th January through 29th January, will run on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The host, Travis Gilbert, Director of International Business, the Ministry of the Economic Development, will facilitate the topic of the day with industry experts that include Cyril Whitter, President & CEO of Independent Management Ltd., Patrick Tannock, President, XL Insurance [Bermuda] Ltd., Shelby Weldon, Director of Licensing & Authorization at the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Shaun Morris, General Counsel & Group Chief Legal Officer at Butterfield Bank, Gil Tucker, Country Managing Partner at Ernst & Young and other prominent members of our community.
Panelists will discuss the financial contribution of international business to Bermuda; define what international business activities in Bermuda encompass; outline the threats to international business in Bermuda; and explain the mechanics of the Bermuda economy and the importance of international business within it.
Cyril Whitter said, “There has recently been much discussion about the importance of international business and the comparative roles of international business and tourism in Bermuda. But much of that discussion has been informed by anecdote and opinion rather than facts. Our goal with the radio series is to put the facts out there, so listeners can understand how international business impacts the daily lives of everyone on our island.”
Government statistics show that the average income of a single resident working in international business leads to a local economic contribution that is equivalent to 251 tourists.
Mr. Whitter said, “The Island’s overall business objective should be to maximise the number of people here contributing to the local economy – both tourists and international business workers alike.”
The radio series is supported by industry sponsors including Butterfield, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Freisenbruch Meyer Group and the Association of Bermuda International Companies [ABIC].
