Canadian Family Deny Smoking On Airline

February 9, 2013

The Canadian family who created a media firestorm after causing a Sunwing flight to divert to Bermuda have issued a statement denying that any member of the family was smoking on the flight. The statement was released by Ontario-based lawyer Michael Haraschuk to the Canadian media.

“On the issue of smoking, there has been misinformation regarding whether members of the MacNeil family were smoking on the airplane,” the statement reads. “At no point did any member of the MacNeil family smoke on the airplane.

“At the honourable Magistrates Court of Bermuda, there was a single smoking charge alleging that David MacNeil Jr. was smoking in the lavatory of the airplane. David MacNeil Jr. entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of smoking on the airplane and the charge was dismissed.”

The flight — which left Canada heading to the Dominican Republic — diverted to Bermuda Feb 1, and three of the family were detained by police. They appeared in Magistrates Court and were charged with offences including disobeying lawful commands of the crew of an aircraft and smoking in a toilet when smoking is prohibited.

The Court heard the defendants used profane language towards the crew, moved about the cabin when asked not to, and that one defendant told the crew, “You f—- a$%#oles, I just pissed all over your floor.”

The father pleaded guilty to behaving in a disorderly manner to the crew of an aircraft, and the mother pleaded guilty to disobeying lawful commands of the crew of an aircraft. The oldest son was charged with smoking on the aircraft, which he denied. No one was actually convicted of smoking on the airplane.

So… The smell of cigarette smoke came from where – and that particular “smell” was observed immediately after the younger MacNeil Jr left the “restroom” and was apparently very evident to the flight crew!!!

He obviously “flushed” the evidence down the toilet – or did the magistrate miss that one on purpose??
