Upcoming: 2nd Annual Beach Art Festival

February 19, 2013

The second annual Bermuda Beach Art Festival is scheduled to be held on Saturday [Mar 23] with the public invited to participate and produce images in the sand at beaches across the island.

A spokesperson said, “I’d like to introduce you to one of Bermuda’s newest and most unique, family, community events, The Bermuda Beach Art Festival. The Festival, still in its infancy, held its first event in March 2012. The event saw over a thousand residents and tourists come out to view and partake of this intriguing art.

“The Bermuda Beach Art Festival is a celebration of Bermuda’s beautiful beaches expressed in art right on and in the sand. Beaches across the island are adorned with amazing beach art that only lasts until the next high tide washes them away.

“The first Festival, which has now become an annual event, saw renowned Beach Artist Sam Dougados join us from France to hold free clinics and master classes prior to the event. Sam was a huge inspiration to all and his beautiful beach art a revelation.

“Sponsored by The Alliance Francaise Bermuda, the first Bermuda Beach Art Festival was a wonderful success and saw participants across the island compete for the winning design.

Beach Art 2013

“The second Bermuda Beach Art Festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2013. Entry is free and we invite artists of all levels, residents and visitors, to participate.

“As last year, there again will be a Play Mobil competition for children and free yoga on the beach, provided by top yoga instructors on 3 beaches, along with water sport demonstrations including windsurfing, kite surfing scuba diving and stand up paddle board demonstrations at Horseshoe Bay.

“A few more really exciting additions to the event are planned for this year including dancers and beach art. Well known Beach Artist from the Jersey Islands, ‘The Jersey Sandman’, Andy Coutanche, will be the guest Beach Artist and Judge in ’13.

“Nicky Gurrett, Founder and Director of The Bermuda Beach Art Festival, who developed and launched the very successful Bermuda Sandcastle Competition, now mostly run by The Tourism Department, and The Deputy Director, Lynne Matcham, are working hard to establish this new event to encourage appreciation of Bermuda’s greatest assets, its beaches and open spaces, as well as the appreciation of this temporary landscape art that is becoming more and more popular world-wide.

“The event is very eco-friendly and nature and science groups have been invited to make presentations during the prize giving ceremony. The Bermuda Beach Art Festival is a family, community event and is a non-profit organisation.”
