200 College Students On Island For Spring Break

March 12, 2013

Bermuda Spring BreakMinister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell provided an update on the 2013 Spring Break activities and said there were 200 students currently on the island enjoying a range of activities and events.

A statement from the Ministry said, “Now in the third week of four weeks of planned Spring Break activities, there are groups of students currently on the island from Yale, Duke University and Cornell as well as other US and Canadian schools. During the first week Bermuda hosted approximately 80 students on-island, of which half were non-residents.

“For week two there were 100 visiting students who enjoyed an Island Party Bus Tour, Spring Break Cruise and Tom Moore’s Jungle/Cave Tour as well as enjoying nightlife activities held at Cosmopolitan, Docksiders and Café Cairo. Now in week three there are approximately 200 students on Island.”

Minister Crockwell said: “Last year we hosted approximately 250 students for Spring Break and we are certainly on track to exceed that number this year. From all accounts the students have had a great time and we will look to build on this momentum next year and hope that some students who visited this year come back again and bring their friends.”

Footage of all the Spring Break fun will be made available via a YouTube video that will be released in early April.

Lets hear from the oba. This was an initiative from the previous administration. Guys its just not the bad and ugly, its also the good.

You all need to stop drinking so much Budweiser.

  2. Tommy Chong says:

Wonder if Shawn has thanked Wayne for initiating this or even give props where they are due.

Last year poster Logic76 says, “Now all we’ll have is a bunch of college kids take home stories of wind, rain, and cold seas! Have you seen the seaweed on Horseshoe Beach?!?!”

@ Logic76 I guess those stories were only your opinion & not those of the spring break students.

There was also a poster who said they would be surprised if this event even brought 40 students here that would never come back. WELLL SUUUURPRIIISSE SUUUURPRIIISSE!!!!!

    • Orbit says:

Ya because you don’t really have any bad stories when ya wasted the whole time lol.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Also after having a few shots of black when your not used to it you feel warm all over even on the coldest day.

        • Loguc76 says:

I’ll stand by my comment…empty beaches and a 1/4 full Ubervida. Taking into account the costs subsidized by the government for Spring Break activities I’d be interested to see the revenues being generated directly from this event. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea but I’m sure plenty of people would agree that Bermuda is better visited between June and September. Last time I checked there’s a reason the reputable charter boats go south for the winter…200 college kids (of what perfect are locals) isn’t going to float a defunct economy.

  3. Orbit says:

    Where all de girls at?!

  4. Bermuda Male says:

Well done to the DoT and all involved in arranging this event.

Hopefully it leads to bigger and better things for our overall tourism product.

    • tourist says:

Bermuda is wack for college students trying to party this time of year. What a waste to come to Bermuda.

      • CranberryMan says:

Couldn’t agree more… Setup somthing different… At a better time of the year…

        • ABN says:

Why are you guys trying to stop Bermuda as a whole from making that money?? Positive my friends, we need positive!!

  5. Portia says:

    Change and Tommy Chong,

The truth is, college students have been coming here for Spring Break for many, many years; it had nothing to do with the PLP. Bermuda could have gotten many more than the 200 students if it aggressively marketed to that group, instead of watching the majority of the business go to Cancun and Florida.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Portia, I know students have been coming here for Spring Break for many, many years but since the 1970s hotel’s spring break ban numbers have dwindled. There have only been a handful before last year that came with their Bermudian friends who go to college with them. It was Wayne Furbert’s idea as past plp DOT minister who came up with the idea to reignite marketing of spring break. It was marketed last year under plp DOT initiative & a commercial was done for it plus agreements with certain hotels & businesses to give special prices for spring break students. There were many nay sayers for this saying it was too cold here & too boring but it worked & now Shawn Crockwell is riding on the back of the plp minister’s idea.

I agree it could be marketed more aggressively but there are more hotel boards who are still against the idea of promoting spring break then those who are for it here.

      • Rebel says:

that’s right! Wayne started this, you better believe it, he taught mr. crock well what he knows…

        • CranberryMan says:

Wayne who? Oh you mean Wayne who used to be UBP? Wayne who used to be OBA? Wayne who is PLP for the time being…?? Wayne who will be ??? Next??

          • ABN says:

you point is…………………….fact is this, who cares who started what or when they started it, more people are coming to the island now why can’t you appreciate this in this very bad economic time????

  6. thehump says:

I (expat) met some of Yale students last night after their party bus cruise when my roommate invited them over… these students are ready to party and are having a great time so far.

I suggest residents and expats go out to events and support these events… Will make for good advertising for next years spring break to be even more successful.

I will be definitely will be out this week.. good group of students that are having a great time so far.

    • Orbit says:

What are the events and where can we see de schedule? Tryna check somethin new bra.

      • thehump says:

check the bottom of this page:

        http://www.gotobermuda.com/springbreak2013/

        • Rebel says:

why does it have to be always pictures of white peoe in our ads.. Bermudian MP’s you really need to get over yourselves and stop promoting Bermuda as all white…. when people get drunk and come to your country they do not care what colour you are.. go figure

          • Y.N.W.A. says:

WTF are you talking about?! The first ad I see has one asian, one black and three white people. What’s the problem?

            • therealknowthyself says:

Yes rebel the token black and asian person..

WTF are you talking about (heavy breathing) like OMG as if!! Lol

              • therealknowthyself says:

Actually it’s a pretty accurate depiction…A group of three white people usually have at least one black friend or work mate…and sure throw an Asian in there for good measure ;)

                • Y.N.W.A. says:

I apologize, my reaction might have been over the top, but I’m just tired of race ALWAYS being brought up on this stupid island. No one under 40 gives a sh!t about people’s skin color.

It’s all those old, over the hill black Bermudians that always look for racism or mention race.

                  • therealknowthyself says:

I talk about racism and race (including politics and religion) a lot and I’m not an old, over the hill black Bermudian as you so eloquently put it. Nor am I 40 years of age. However that’s besides the point.

You just want it to go away. And while I can sympathize with your sentiments toward race/racism. It’s sort of like when your a kid and you close your eyes hoping the boogy man will disappear. Unfortunately with race and racism it’s a harsh reality and perpetuates itself systematically in our society. It’s no fairy tale or scary dream.

                    • Y.N.W.A. says:

It does not perpetuate itself, a select few choose to keep it alive (the E.B. generation and pro PLP supporters), when most young people don’t believe it to still be an issue.

The only people my age who still believe it to be an issue are those who have had it drilled into their heads from their parents and grandparents that the “white man” has it out for them, and will never view them as equal

  7. Ben Dover says:

The Southampton Princess has 400 rooms. Assuming double occupancy, they would be at 25% occupancy with the entire bunch of students. Big deal.

    • Tommy Chong says:

That’s still better than the occupancy they have at present. Every dollar counts at this point. Besides both fairmonts still have their nose up in the air towards spring breakers. I guess its better to be staunch & fail then to be lax & gain for them.

      • Um Um Like says:

Speaking of dollar, how much does it cost taxpayers to advertise for this initiative, and how much money does it bring to the island? Does it even generate a profit?

        • Tommy Chong says:

I’m not sure but I would bet theres some good ROI on this. If stats were taking we’d probably find that these students are consuming far more of local products wether it be food, drinks or souvenirs than a cruise ship full. Probably even consuming more than the out of school air arrival tourist. There are states in the U.S. & other countries who make billions yearly on spring break. Students don’t have much to loose spending their & their parents money because they have a long life ahead of them where they’ll worry about saving for their kids. The future side to this is once married & settled down they will have somewhere familiar to look at to take the family on vacation.

          • Um Um Like says:

How about we get the stats, rather than relying on your baseless assumptions.

I would certainly hope these students consume more than cruise ship passengers. I doubt many Yale, Duke or Cornell students travelling to Bermuda for spring break would be pinching pennies! …can’t say the same for cruise ship passengers.

            • Tommy Chong says:

Maybe if the government had a stat breakdown of what is spent by tourist during events this would help to gauge. Hopefully this is something that the new government does so an educated decision is made. This would be a first since we have a history of governments that base judgement on opinion. Sadly our current government hasn’t made me hopeful of this because the first implementations have been the same as the old based on opinion not factual stats. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is just a green behind the ears mistake & as time goes on they will learn to gather facts before making decisions.

        • Eastern says:

          @ Um Um

It doesn’t matter whether it makes a profit or not. These are all future visitors. They will come on their honeymoon, when they have kids and when they retire.

          • Come Correct says:

You mean one they have seen that there’s next to nothing to do here and no weed? Doubtful.

            • Tommy Chong says:

There is something on island it’s been stolen from others by force & given a highway robbery price. I don’t recommend anyone going to get from these low life thieves especially tourist since who knows what the outcome may be. Sad to say its not going to get any better as long as these freaks are allowed to do what they have been doing.

On the upside of things for the students they can get their drink on a year before they could in Canada & three years before they could in the states. Besides even if things were any better we couldn’t offer them anything they could get at home at a much better quality. It’s best they stick with the drink then they won’t have to be worried about getting arrested & given a choice of imprisonment or get their parents to western union them a years worth of their tuition fee as a fine.

Hopefully they always have a tour bus available so they don’t have to rent a scooter. It’s the safer way for them to travel & safety is key for all our visitors.

              • therealknowthyself says:

Sure let them rent scooters and get some road rash. That’s all part of the bermy experience ay LOL…afterwards they can wash away there pain and sorrow in our refreshing salt water, that is if they don’t ride into a ditch or collide with a bus first. Gotta love rental cycle places – no drivers license required! Just a little crash course.

  8. Der says:

200 people? Wow what a waist of time… and bermuda is proud lofl all that advertisment 4 200 ppl. Thats the wackest party bus off all time

    • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

lmfao …how true brah …and these a#$ holes acting like they found the cure for cancer or jus wanna start s#!t amongst us. 200 students woop pee!

  9. Rick Olson says:

First of all Bud is $3 at 103 Front Street the Beach DJ to 3am nightly !

Secondly my friend Shawn has learned hw to spin the numbers like Flip Flop which is a mistake trying to mislead the public and I realize Spring Break was to far along to cancel this year so point in pretending that this program needs tp go.

We need to start spending our money where it counts and stop chasing our tail in the dark . We can rebuild tourism if we want to give the tourists what thet want the 80′s
    are long gone.

    • Ben Dover says:

$3 Buds and a DJ… I see Mr. Olson has been working all year on his Spring Break promotion.

      • Kettle says:

I think he’s been DRINKING his own $3 Buds. Learn some grammar and get spell-check, Mate!

        • enough says:

Not to mention that the place is gangsta paradise at the weekends with a DJ shouting and swearing over the mic. Used to be my spot and that of my friends; I only feel safe during the days there now.
I guess chasing the almighty dollar is all that matters.

          • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

chasing the dollar or avoiding a bullet…

    • Spin says:

You need to pay more attention too the gang that’s been using you’re Beach BAr as a hang out spot Mr. Olson. My mate was the guy that got beat and rob in the bathroom there! That’s the reason my friends have X you off the list.

      • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

        like i said earlier…prolly avoiding a bullet…

    • Orbit says:

Nobody drinks bud neways ya old fart. Fall back.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Hopefully some spring breakers read your post & boycott to your stinky bar that is frequented by far too many wanksters now for anyone else to have a good time. What’s your future plan make the Beach into the new captains lounge? Makes sense, at least it won’t matter if the new crowd pours one down for a dead hommie. Its not like all the spilt alcohol would make the place smell any worse.

      • Ben Dover says:

There’s a reason it is called Star Wars Bar.

        • Therealknowthyself says:

Well there’s always the Royal Bermuda Yacht club right :) You can go there and have a nice black and coke. Take your girlfriend with you.

          • Tommy Chong says:

I guess so! Even if RBYC is a bit stuffy at least you wont have someone who doesn’t know his own waste size harassing your girl when you go to take wiz. Actually they don’t even wait for you to take a wiz to harass. Not because they’re tough but because they have their hair braiding boyfriends to back them up.

            • Therealknowthyself says:

That’s precisely why I suggested you take Mrs. Chong with you. They have great jasmine tea there. After all alcohol will only make her susceptible to those sexual urges brewing deep within her psyche to transfer bodily fluids with a gangster, with braids I might add (lets not forget to racially profile) and she might end up re-visiting the Beach. And since I care about your relationship I’m offering this advice free of charge. Btw my sofa is always free for private consultation ;) Bring your girlfriend. I have a waiting room outside just for you with a no pants sagging sign on the wall.

              • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

NOW DATZ WAT UM TALKIN’ ‘BOUT BRAH!!

              • Tommy Chong says:

You suggesting that pants sagging & braided hair as racially profiling is in fact you racially profiling. There are guys of all shades that braid up their hair & where their pants so low you can see their underwear. The sagging pants is not a race thing its a gang thing wether or not the people who wear them that way know it or not. Its a trend that came from prisoners being issued prison clothing that was not always their size & not being allowed to wear belts with them because of what belts could be used for in prison. The majority of people who wear their pants this way know this & are trying to imitate the gangster culture. You suggesting that the gangster culture is related to one particular race is racist. As for the braiding of hair my comment was to the wanksters who commonly get their guy friends to braid their hair hence, “their hair braiding boyfriends to back them up.” I’m not stating that all men who have their hair braided are gangster wannabes but that the gangster wannabes get their hair braided by their boyfriends which is true. My whole point is that the beach has become the hang out spot for the wanksters which is the truth. If you knew who was part of the middle town crews you would recognize that but obviously you don’t. There are police officers who used to go to the beach to chill when not on duty but don’t anymore because of the new crowd.

You are way off with your view of Mrs. Chong because I’d probably have more of a problem in RBYC than the beach since Mrs. Chong is a grown lady who likes grown men wear not sagging pants. She loves a suit & loves seeing me in one & would ask me wear the halloween party is if I dressed like one of these fools. Not all males of African decent dress like you are profiling them. Mrs. Chong has relatives who are real gangsters in the worst real hardcore gang in the world & she wants absolutely nothing to do with them & is sick of seeing whats happened in Bermuda because she’s seen where it all ends up. I have no worries of losing her to any of these wanksters because to her they are all a joke not knowing what real gangs are all about getting teardrops tattooed to their face not knowing what they really mean & how if a real gang member abroad saw those tattoos it could mean them losing their life over some ridiculous fashion.

I have no worries about loosing Mrs. Chong to anyone because she loves me because I’m me because thats who I’ve got to be. The rest are imitations so don’t believe the hype its a sequel. :D

                • therealknowthyself says:

Oops you got me there Tommy old boy!!! Or did you??

You’re absolutely right! Afterall we both know you’re referring to the pant sagging white gangsters at the beach harassing all the “black” peace-loving patrons, right?

In your own words, ” What’s your future plan make the Beach into the new captains lounge?”

Now the beach will be just like Captains lounge. Full of white ‘pant sagging’ gangsters who braid there boyfriends hair, right?

Lets stick to the context at hand Mr. Chong ;)

As for Mrs Chong.. Sounds like holy matrimony or something to that effect. All the best.

                  • Tommy Chong says:

You really like to twist words don’t you?

Of course the wanksters are going to be of African decent in a country where the majority is African decent. This is not stereotyping just as it wouldn’t be stereotyping to say in Japan all the Yakuza is Japanese decent or in Italy the Mafia is all Italian decent. This doesn’t mean that anytime someone sees a dark skinned male in Bermuda they should think they are in a gang but for sure if you are Bermudian & lived in Bermuda the majority of your life & see people you know are part of ps frequent a bar you know that they consider the bar theirs now. Just as captains was considered by ps to be theirs. If you need more proof just look at what ____ceSS did to her cousin in captains because she didn’t like the idea of her cousin bringing someone from 42 up there.

Either you don’t know jack about the goings on in Bermuda or you are trying to defend some of your PS mates. All the wanksters need to give it up from ps to 42 to m@b to the ones up khyber pass. They are messing up the program & bringing the heat & destroying the conscious place Bermuda used to be.

                    • therealknowthyself says:

So the “wanksters” have to be black or “african decent” because Bermuda is majority black island? That’s your conclusion and you believe your examples are comparable, really? lol Last I checked whites account for 34.1 percent of Bermudians…and did you account for mixed race..6.4% and other 4.3%?? Not to mention all the white gangsters or as some would describe white ex-slavery plantation owners.

      • No To the Beach says:

Tommy Chong is right….Rick spends so much time trashing and complaining about Spring Break, as he posts his Spring Break specials for students at The Beach….If you are so against the initiative and think it’s such a waste put a sign up on your door saying “Spring Breakers not wanted as I don’t think that you are worth going after to come to Bermuda and patronize my business”.

Bermuda…… for those individuals who are always whining and complaining and trashing initiatives that look to get people in our country during a time of year to help our economy why support them when their negative and contrived comments are so divisive.

Rick maybe you should spend more time making the Beach safer for your guests, at night as it is known as “Gang City” where you go to get robbed and threatened, than on Facebook and RG commenting on casinos.

    • watcher says:

with the greatest amount of respect Rick, you have a lot of great ideas about tourism, but why would we come to the beach anymore? my friends and I stopped coming when you let your bar become the gang bangger hangout on Front St.

      • Kettle says:

So very true! I don’t even go there during the day anymore. anyone that goes there or let’s their kids go there needs to have their head examined. “Sure son, you can go play in gunfire.” Shame it has become gang headquarters but I guess their money spends just like mine does. #sellout

  10. Therealknowthyself says:

Cannabis coffee shops would certainly attract more kids for spring break. It’s important that we also serve herbal soft drinks and food. And absolutely no alcohol in these shops.

    I thought this was interesting….

“NORML has opened a cannabis-themed coffee shop in Portland, Oregon. It is accessible to NORML members who are authorized under The Oregon Medical Marijuana Program. Cannabis is not available for sale, but distributed freely for consumption on premises. There is also speculation of cannabis coffee shops opening in Colorado and Washington following the states’ 2012 legalization of cannabis following public referenda.” (wikipedia)

Road races, golf tournaments…etc would bring in more people and bigger spenders…for less money

Smile – it does not hurt. MmmK

To all of the College Kids here. I do hope you guys have a great time. Be safe and be careful. Tell all your friends and Welcome to Bermuda.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Maybe you should read all the negative post that were put up last year about spring break & then you’d see where this all stems from. I don’t give a crap about plp or oba as neither is true to their word & are just like any other self serving politicians worldwide. I’m all for good ideas from whoever they come from but cant stand it when others ride off peoples backs & then take the credit doesn’t matter if its a political party or whoever. Give credit where its due & stop siding for whoever the followers side for.

That’s why we tailor our spring break promotion with deals and packages in order to make it affordable and attractive for students visiting our island.

    It’s not rocket science.

    • Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

yeah but …who wants to vacation in,in a small town(meaning the size of our island) of nothing but Police n Thieves…think about it really. Definitely not Party Central in my opinion…

      • Tommy Chong says:

200 students want to. Who has more police & thieves or even police who are thieves than Cancun & students love to go there despite how dangerous it is. At least here is safer & even if our wanksters are shooting each other they are not chopping heads off & leaving them on car hoods as a message or kidnapping tourist for ransom money.

  17. Bobmarlin says:

I remember when there were 5000 students every week.
However, OBA this is a good start, keep it up!

  18. Rick Olson says:

Facts BUD is the most popular beer in the world and sponser the FA CUP and is extremly popular with American Spring Breakers save your bud tops you can win a VIP FA CUP final vacation package.

Bermuda Bistro at the Beach aka The Beach is a extremly busy restaurant that caters to all types and and late nights we have an excellant security team to ensure our patrons safety. In fact I am extremly impressed with the behavior of are patrons as we have had almost NO PROBLEMS the last year as respect is mutual at 103 Front Street. We are the busiest bar in Bermuda most nights and treat everyone fairly it is a shame that many back of town bars have gone downhill putting extra pressure on Front Street and we are up to the task especially since so many expats have been chased off.

It is about chasing the dollar especially when you have four kids and wife that never looks at a price tag all I know is many licensed establishment are very close to shutting down as our industry is extremly competitive. I love what I do for a living and it is humbling to meet people from all walks of life.

If my typo’s bother you really should get out more and live a little we really are a safe island. Now that I have jinxed mysrelf expect big problems at our 2 4 1 tonight. Cheers

    • Watcher says:

Didn’t a gang banger break someone’s jaw in your peaceful establishment this year Rick? We left because you couldn’t walk to the bathroom without having to force our way through a large group of PSers blocking the way, and being disrespectful to our female company. used to be ok cause the popo drank in there so felt reasonably safe but even they have moved on now. I know business is competitive Rick, but if you choose to let that sort frequent your bar just because they by bottles of Chivas and high end spirits then we choose the right to take our business to your competitors and recommend others do likewise.

      • Bermuda Male says:

Completely agreed. Used to love the Beach, until the PS rats starting infesting the place.

  19. Lazy In Bermuda... says:

Boy have these naive kids been BAMBOOZLED!!! This is the worst time of year to visit!! False Advertising!!

    • Tommy Chong says:

Some of these kids are repeat vacationers who came to last years spring break & I’m sure they past the message of the fun time they had onto their mates who have come this year.

People said false advertising for the last spring break when there was no footage since the 1970′s. Well, thats understandable but the newest commercial advertised for this years event was footage taken from last years. How is false when it’s taken from an event that actually happened during the past spring break?

  20. CommonSense says:

There two big reasons why Bermuda will never be a popular Spring Break destination for college students.

    1. Bermuda is too expensive, college students have very little money to spend to begin with. So when they are planning a Spring Break trip you better believe that they are going to go with the inexpensive option. Any number of tips to Mexico or Cruises to the Carribean can cost a fraction of what it costs for the same experience in Bermuda.

    2. Spring Break trips are about sunny weather, girls in bikinis, and big parties. The weather in Bermuda in March is just not nice enough to ever be a popular spring break destination. Spring breakers want to be taking shots of tequila on a beach surrounded by 1,000 other drunk kids in their bathing suits, all with wicked bad sun burns. This is not happening in Bermuda.

  21. Rebel says:

why does it have to be always pictures of white people in our ads.. Bermudian MP’s you really need to get over yourselves and stop promoting Bermuda as all white….

    • therealknowthyself says:

      @ Rebel

Assuming what you say is true…

The masses of the world often define and associate white with innocence, goodness and purity. Hence the reason many cultures use whitening soap and worship a white portrayal of Jesus Christ. So to promote Bermuda as a safe and conservative travel destination I suppose it’s wise approach on their part.

Come to Bermuda!! Lots of white people here so we guarantee your safety!! Just stay away from that Beach bar (according to some) for heavens sake don’t go there or any other place white people don’t frequent on a nightly basis ;)

      • Tommy Chong says:

No one mentioned anything about the beach bar being a colour issue its a wankster issue. Brothers go to cosmo, cairo, docksiders, flanagans & even a few go to P O but no ones warning about those. Bermuda is small & people know who the wanksters are & where they frequent.

BTW the black/white thing is an western ideology that doesn’t exist in the majority of the of the eastern side of the world. People who speak spanish, portuguese, italian & other languages usually don’t use the term black or white in their language to identify people. People are identified by their nationality or words to identify the exact skin tone like light brown or dark brown not black or white. Also there is only a few religions that is allow depiction of Jesus most others consider that idol worship & will not even have images in their church. In many European countries they pray to a black madonna that is literally dark skinned or black now explain that in your chuck d mentality.

        • therealknowthyself says:

          Chuckle…

“Brothers go to cosmo, cairo, docksiders…” Lol

Who are you referring to with this statement?

As for “BTW the black/white thing is an western ideology that doesn’t exist in the majority of the of the eastern side of the world.”

What makes you so sure? And have you considered the fact that “western ideology” is constantly being exported to eastern countries e.g. coca-colonization and/or cultural-colonization.

Your point about these alternative-language speaking or ethnic cultures is interesting. i’ll have to look into that one..Though historically racism existed in these countries and although there may not be an actual term for black, white, or other (although I’m not certain)to identify people of color within there respective cultures, the sentiment and racist system which once divided these various races was apparent and still is today.

As for the black madonna…chuckle. That doesn’t change or alter the validity of my point in the least. Sure there is a statue of a black madonna….but the figure head of the Christian faith known as Christ is all too often depicted as “white” or as some would say, “genetically recessive”.

          • Tommy Chong says:

I’m referring to men of African decent as brothers as I don’t like to use the words black or white to describe people since they are fallacies.

Many things from the west may be able to be exported to the other side of the world but not racism. Only a few on that side were able to instill some type of racial ideology & even if similar to the west it was not the same. There was Hitler but that was racism against a race that most consider to be “white” then there is the racism in Africa which is against other Africans not as much because of colour but because of a difference in physical features between one group of Africans & another which is still not the same.

There is nowhere beside America where people are still segregated into ghettoized areas because of the colour of their skin. This just doesn’t make sense to the rest of the world even if exported because when someone from Europe sees an African descended person depicted as a gangster & talking in slang it doesn’t relate to an African descended person in their country talking properly in their language & having no gang ties whatsoever. They just look at this as entertainment & not reality & some may generalize African Americans to be this way while the rest of the African descended people of the world to be more civilized but this is no ones fault but those who agree to depict their race like this for the hollywood dollar. This is why people like Josephine Baker & Sally Hemings early in history decided to move to Europe where they were looked at as equals.

The white Christ you are referring to is a belief in catholicism or break off religions of catholicism which is not a representation of all christian religions as most fought wars against the catholics long ago against having statues depicting any deity in there churches. If you went into a baptist, pentecostal or even a non denominational church you will not see any images of jesus & most that go to those church realize if Jesus came from the middle east he must of had olive skin. It’s only because the founder of the catholic church constantine was trying to convert his romans to a non polytheistic religion that he decided it was best to relate Jesus to the roman statue of jupiter & his mother mary to venus & use the other apostle to relate to other roman gods & this is where the confusion of Jesus image began.

            • therealknowthyself says:

“Many things from the west may be able to be exported to the other side of the world but not racism.”

You couldn’t possibly believe this statement is true?

Racism is ingrained in western ideology and is often exported via western media outlets. This in turn has subliminal as well as tangible effects on the culture of countries worldwide.

“Only a few on that side were able to instill some type of racial ideology & even if similar to the west it was not the same.”

Well of course it won’t be the same because the context and circumstances in which the racial divide was created was tailored accordingly. For example the conquest and colonization of Africa created the perfect setting for racism and racial ideology to manifest. Prior to the invasion of the white colonial invaders in Africa racism was virtually nonexistent.. historically speaking.

And lastly you mention and I assume this is present day, “racism in Africa which is against other Africans not as much because of colour but because of a difference in physical features between one group of Africans & another which is still not the same.”

These same white colonial invaders are largely to blame for this unfortunate occurrence. They created this divide through psychological conditioning in many instances and exploitation. I’m not sure where you got this idea of “racism in africa…because of a difference in physical features btw one group and another..” however I presume you’re referring to the Rwandan genocide and if so have you considered the role and influence Belgian colonialism played in that?

As for the image of christ as a white, blue eyed Aryan don’t worry I don’t need a history lesson I’m well aware of where that image originated…however that doesn’t change the fact this portrayal of Jesus has been magnified and used to exploit and manipulate black people for generations past and still reflects the minds of people today particularly many whites who believe they’re closer to God and a superior race.

You won’t find that crowd in Cairo, guarantee that.

  22. BABS says:

All I have to say is WOW. Is it really necessary to insult one another??? And just to correct you. The ex Minister Patrice Minors re-introduced the Spring break and not Wayne Furbert people. Try to be nice to one another.

  23. Unbelievable says:

The negativity in bermuda is unbearable! Ijust wish everybody would get rid of that small minded bermudian mentality. Iwish evrry bermudian had a chance to go away and experience how others in the world live only then we would be grateful and appreciate what we have. We need to come together and progress instead of complaining about everything! And dont blame rick for allowing ‘gangstas’ to come to establishment and SPEND MONEY because. Blame their parents and the police for allowing it to get this far!!

  24. therealknowthyself says:

    @YNWA

Perhaps you’re probably better off with that mindset.

Sometimes reality can be harsh and while racism and economic oppression can and often hampers the progress and health of our community; particularly the black populace – If you believe it is nonexistent or as you stated due to, “the E.B. generation and pro PLP supporters” than perhaps you will have less to overcome. Perhaps Craig Cannonier is our crowned savior. All hail the OBA!!! Btw what the heck is the E.B generation lol?
