Daylight Savings: Time To Spring Forward 1 Hour

March 9, 2013

Alarm clockIt’s time for Bermuda to “spring forward” once again. This year, Daylight Saving Time will occur on Sunday [Mar.10] at 2 a.m. So, before you go to bed tonight, remember to set your clocks ahead an hour.

While you’re at it, the Bermuda Fire Service reminds residents to check the batteries on their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well.

Daylight saving time is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn. Time will fall back to standard time again on Sunday, November 3, 2013, when daylight saving time ends.

Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time was extended one month and the schedule to adopt daylight saving time is 2.00am on the second Sunday in March to 2.00am on the first Sunday of November.

well i suppose my electricity bill will be higher this month since i’ve been up since 4am with my lights on, another thing i could never wrap my brain around , why does Belco tell you to conserve and save…then tell you they have taken losses in revenue so they have to increase their rates, just remember every single electrical meter on this island registers revenue for the one and only Belco, and for those of you who uses propane for any reason Belco has a big hand in that resource as well… would be interesting to see their expenditures compared to their income…before they cook the books.

    • @work says:

Belco is one of those companies. You love them when they get your power turned back on and hate them when the bill comes. A few months ago I found out that they had been estimating the usage due to an empty bucket blocking their access to the meter. I thought it was strange that no notice was sent with the bill for over a year, so I moved it myself using my foot. Now my bill has dropped from $300-$350 p/m range down to $125 – $150. It would have been lower but I was testing my new AC for 6 days and night 24/7.

Try using LED bulbs. I use Philips 409904/423343 – BC12A19/AMB/2700-800 DIM Dimmable LED 12.5 Watt Light Bulb — Lasts 22.8 Years in the bedrooms, and PHILIPS EnduraLED 17 Watt A21 Dimmable LED Light Bulb 1100Lm ~ 75w equiv in the kitchen. I’ve ordered a 8 watt bulb for the hallway which will be connected to a motion senor light switch.

      • Watching On says:

So that’s why my Belco bill is so high. Ok now

    • Time Shall Tell says:

Belco is one company that I honestly believe needs competition or needs to be constantly 3rd party audited & monitored. It wasn’t until the communication industry was looked into by a 3rd party did we first find how much we where being robbed (remember paying over $1.35 a minute for long distance calls then after the audit it dropped to $0.25 a minute or how we where having to pay over $100 a month for dial up before the audit then $25 a month for DSL after).

There are plenty of hidden charges that Belco tack on to the Bill that should be criminal & with the new “smart meters” there’s no excuse for estimating anyone’s bill any longer. The cost associated with the meters shouldn’t be extended to the end customer (that’s like Market Place charging you for their cash register), the hidden fees attached to your bill is a whole other criminal activity..

      • Time Shall Tell says:

With Belcos dirty power & doubt you will see that 22.5 – 22.8 years on those LEDs, you may get 5 to 8 years if lucky (also have to factor in Bermuda’s high humidity). The LED itself may be still fine but there’s a little circuit onboard known as a driver & this driver is what usually fails & long before the stated life span.

        • @work says:

The life span is based on x amount of time in use per day. Not 24/7 use. Doesn’t everyone know that? Anyone who expects any light bulb to last 22 years would be lucky and a bit naive. The description is a straight copy and paste from Amazon so that anyone who may what to try them out would know which LED bulbs I’m referring too as there are many brands and models.

I don’t put much stock in BDA’s humidity issue (new windows and AC took care of the problem in my house and a dehumidifier is another option), nor would I use that as a reason not to try out new tech designed to reduce one’s utility usage, if not the bill because I live in Bermuda. If Keepin’ it Real…4Real! is concerned about what lights are costing him/her, these may be any option.

          • Time Shall Tell says:

Yes, I do know about the work cycle of the LED that was used to base the estimated life span of a LED. The figures I gave was given with this already factored in.

There’s also much more to LED & other such tech that can actually be harmful to other sensitive electrical equipment but that’s mainly based on large commercial building rather then households.

Unless you’re running your dehumidifier/AC unit 24/7 then humidity does play a factor especially if you live in a traditional Bermuda house or very close to a lot of trees (mini climate).

            • @work says:

I did solve the humidity problem without running the AC 24/7, I do live next to the coast and there are trees.

From your first comment, it did not appear that you were aware of how the life span was calculated and just went with the manufacturers description. No problem, 5 to 8 years is what should/can be expected. I noticed that you did not acknowledge that it was just a manufactures description of the product or if they were worth trying out or not.

Time will tell how long the LEDs last or if the utility bill shows any small decrease in energy usage, which is the selling point. I’m betting on 10 years.

      • @work says:

Your are correct on the estimating part. Smart meter or not. The Belco guy who checked my meter stated that installing a new meter would increase the bill because they are more accurate. If what he said is correct, ensuring there is a clear path to the meter is the better way to go.

        • Time Shall Tell says:

If you take a look at the size wire used to feed the average older Bermuda home that along the way had a meter upgrade. You would find that more times then not the size wire provided by Belco is undersized to the requirements of the newer meter.

I can tell you this, I have had the older model of meters as well as presently have the “smart meter” installed at my house & have checked both for accuracy. Neither one measured up to actual use but then the measurements where taken from opposite sides of the Belco provided service cable.

If you have the older version of meters then all I can say openly is Google them & that you’re lucky (I wish I still had mines, Belco you know what I’m talking about)…..

          • @work says:

I think I’ll decline any future meter ‘upgrade’, the one that’s here now works just fine.

BTW: I’m not complaining about BELCO, nor do I think we ‘need to calm down’ as @famous thinks. The information we are providing is free and without the insults or personal attacks.

Who the hell keeps on messing with my time ?

  4. Autumn Fire says:

You know, we are not happy campers! It’s too early in the year! Put the time back!

This moving the clocks forward so soon is irritating…seems like we just moved the clocks back the other day, oh, wait, it was the other day – about 4 months ago?!… Who comes up with this stuff, 8 months of the clock forward and 4 months of the clock back! Didn’t it used to be 6 months each? You know, you people shouldn’t be messing’ with the time, cause those neighborhood roosters and chickens still crow at the wrong hours…

  5. famous says:

you cant seriously blame the power company for this

theres more to things than there may seem, you people need to calm down

    chill out, everythings cool

    • @work says:

I don’t read any complaints about BELCO, most of the comments are about LED lights and Utility meters plus a few ways of saving money. Keepin’ it Real…4Real had a question, far from a complaint. Time Shall Tell and I are/were talking current tech, I know I never complained about BELCO and I don’t think Time shall Tell did.

  6. Bobmarlin says:

Lots of people late for work this morning!

  7. Ximena says:

Unless stores are gonna make use of the “extra” hours of daylight then we don’t need daylight savings time. It’s a waste n an inconvenience. So many ppl hate it n it’s an unnecessary adjustment. If we don’t change the times it only means it’ll get dark around 7 instead of 8….not that big of difference. 27 years of life n I still hate it….GET RID OF IT!!
