Bermuda Police To Host ACCP Conference

April 23, 2013

The Bermuda Police Service will host the 2013 Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police [ACCP] Conference at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess from April 29th to May 2nd.

This is the 28th annual conference of the ACCP and the theme is “Police and Public Partnerships: Linking prevention, intervention and enforcement strategies to tackle gang and youth violence.”

The keynote speaker is Professor David Kennedy of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. Professor Kennedy is the author of the book “Don’t Shoot” in which he describe the project “Operation Ceasefire,” which is used to combat gang-related violence.

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, said “The theme of this conference is about bringing the entire community together to tackle guns and gangs from every angle.

“Law enforcement can only do so much, and most of our work comes after extensive damage has already been done. Professor Kennedy’s address promises to provide real examples of how other agencies can engage the problem across the wide range of social, political and economic factors.”

The conference will be opened at 9am on Monday by Governor George Fergusson, and other dignitaries including Premier Craig Cannonier, Minister of Public Safety Michael Dunkley, and the President of the ACCP Ellison Greenslade, who is also the Commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

“Law enforcement can only do so much” Professor Bermudians are painfully aware of that fact, and “Bring the community together to tackle gun violence from every angle” DeSilva how about tackling it HEAD ON sounds like another talk no action scenario
