Man Jailed: One Year For Cannabis Possession

30-year-old Waleed Rahman was sentenced to 12 months in prison after being convicted of possessing over 20 grams of the illegal drug cannabis in Southampton in 2012.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner read out a handwritten statement that Rahman had handed in, in which the defendant had written that he was unemployed, homeless, and had to resort to desperate measures.

The Magistrate replied that given Rahman’s previous criminal record, which began in 1999, a fine was inappropriate and the Magistrate then handed down the twelve month sentence.

    The Judge could have just given him a nice fat fine of $5000 – and if he did’nt have the money with him
    he could have made to have it paid in installments
    I wonder when the Govt.of the day is going to realize that it cost us big money to Jail sombody.

    Did you read the story? His note states that he is unemployed and resorted to desperate measures. You suggest that he should be given a $5000 fine? Would you care to elaborate on where you expect him to get the money to pay, or do we just assume that he will go out and sell more weed to cover the “cost of business”?
