Video: Boat Starts Sinking, Marine Police Assist

April 5, 2013

Yesterday afternoon [Apr 4] the Marine Police were called to the waters off North Shore in Devonshire to render assistance after a boat began sinking. Dr Edward Schultz was the lone person on the boat and was out diving when waves came over the side, flooding the boat.

A police spokesperson said, “At 2:14pm on Thursday, Marine Police were dispatched to the area of North Shore, Pembroke [off Grace Church] to a report of a boat in distress.

“Upon arrival it was confirmed that the 20ft vessel was approximately 200 meters from the shore and the operator of the vessel was clearly in distress due to heavy swells in the area and the vessel began to sink.

“The Boat was secured and then assisted to Devonshire Dock by Marine police. The lone person on board the vessel was unharmed.”

Dr Schultz thanked the people on land who spotted him in difficulty and called the police, as well as expressed his appreciation to the police for their assistance.

I know it’s a bit late to mention this, but everything I was ever taught about diving included a person topside to make sure that things like this (or your boat drifting off) didn’t happen. At very least have someone to watch the bubbles if you’re not going to dive with a buddy.

What a dumb man to be diving alone! Some people never learn. All that education to become a Dr, and still not one oz of common sense.

  6. Self-righteous landlubber says:

Load of nonsense you people speak. Nothing wrong with diving alone from a boat 200m off shore if you’re a good swimmer and wearing flippers. The only thing you stand to lose is your boat. If that happens you abandon your boat and you’ll be back on shore in 5 minutes.

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

A very good Dr he may be. A good boater….maybe not so much. Why did the boat take on water? Anchored by the stern? It does not appear to be that rough so proper anchoring would not sink it.

Smart, educated people are not necessarily good at understanding things like small boats & how they behave. Dumb uneducated people don’t understand many many things.

Give the guy a break. He made a mistake. Nobody is perfect.

While I feel that he put himself in a dangerous situation, I am so glad that God was in control . Dr. Schultz please be mindful that it is very important to never go out by youreslf again. Safety should be your number one priority. All the nasty comments people made were not necessary, because we all have made crazy decisions. What would Jesus say? ” Those who are……… Throw the first stone. Glad that you are alive. Will give you a big hug when I see you at work. Please be aware that there are a lot of people in Bermuda that depend on you and care about you
