Masterworks Marks Global Museum Day

May 17, 2013

The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is celebrating International Museum Day today [May 17] and over the weekend with free admission for all visitors to the Botanical Gardens gallery .

Ever since 1977 the International Council of Museums has marked International Museum Day on or around May 18 to raise public awareness on how important museums are in the development of society.

The theme of the International Museum Day 2013 — “Museums [Memory + Creativity] = Social Change” — is intended to show that the richness of a country’s historical heritage, preserved and displayed by museums, together with the inventiveness and vitality that have characterised the museum sector’s action in recent years, are where the strength of museum institutions lies today.

“This truly optimistic theme in the form of an equation dynamically gathers several concepts that are essential to define what a museum is today, highlighting the universal nature of those institutions and their positive influence on society,” said a Masterworks spokesperson.
