May 17, 2013

crockwell italianFollowing a two day visit to Milan, Italy in March Minster of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell has received feedback on the media coverage generated by the trip, saying that  15 editorials were published reaching an audience of 471,000 readers/viewers.

A statement said, “Both trade and consumer media underlined the highlights and attractions of Bermuda with travel trade magazine Turismo & Attualità dedicating its cover story to the Minister and his visit to Italy while lifestyle satellite TV network MSNBC Class Life broadcast an interview with the Minister in its weekend magazine.

“On Monday, 4th March the top tour operators who specialize in selling Bermuda were entertained for dinner on a vintage Milan street car which took the guests on a tour of Milan while dining on board. The Minister and Director had the opportunity to meet each operator personally, exchanging opinions and information about Bermuda.

“The encounter with the trade press was held the following day at the Principe di Savoia Hotel, in the heart of Milan. Present were 12 selected members of the trade and consumer travel press. The Minister answered questions and also updated them on what is currently happening in Bermuda.

“The Minister had the opportunity to introduce the exciting new brand campaign, “Bermuda, So Much More” and also underlined that Government is working to establish a Tourism Authority to help execute the Plan and revitalize Bermuda’s tourism industry. Speeches by the Minister and Director of Tourism, William Griffith were followed by journalist’s questions with the attending press showing great interest in the new campaign.”

Minister Crockwell said: “Our meetings with the Italian press have generated, to date, 15 editorials with a total coverage value of more than $90,000 and reaching an audience of 471,000 readers/viewers. This is a great result in a market in which we see much potential. This visit was also perfectly timed to showcase Bermuda before a planned e-training seminar held for Italian agents to specialise on marketing the Island.”

Among the editorial to be highlighted, the March 18th edition of Turismo & Attualità the cover was dedicated to Minister Crockwell [pictured top left] with the online version enabling readers to click on a photo to take them to the So Much More Campaign.

The Minister also appeared in the weekend TV magazine broadcasted by Class Life, a satellite TV network member of international network MSNBC. The 4.30 minute interview also provided footage of the new “Bermuda so much more” campaign.

A production crew from Class Life also visited Bermuda at the end of April and a planned special report fully dedicated to the island as a leisure destination highlighting history, natural treasures and activities is expected to be broadcast in mid June.

  1. Family Man says:

plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose

    Pathetic.

  2. Free advice says:

His trip was a joke. Wasting more money just like the PLP did. Nothing new here folks.

    • Christine says:

Here is an idea, instead of being critical use that energy to promote your home. Do something positive for tourism. Say hello to a tourist, tell them something good about Bermuda, show pride in your home. It only takes a little to make a tourist feel good and then oddly enough..they will return

  3. blazer says:

I thought drug convicts couldn’t travel

    • I really think there needs to be an amendment made to our present laws, protecting people from idiots like blazer.

We are well aware of Mr Crockwells past but he had paid his debt to society and anyone that chooses to slander his name should be brought before the courts, when it is done in an open forum like this.

If you have something to say about his ministry or his portfolio,is one thing but to take pot shots at his character is just plain stupid, We could understand if he was not within his rights as minister to do such travelling, or if he was found mis using public funds. That would be a whole different issue, raise the level and attack things based on merit and things that warrant it, get rid of the personal character assasination.

      • Christine says:

I could not agree more…stick with this Motto..if you don’t have something nice to say then say nothing.. Mr. Crockwell is a brilliant man and a true asset to Bermuda.

      • js says:

I am not sure how calling a person a drug convict when that person has been lawfully convicted of a drug related offence can be considered slander especially where it is true and public knowledge.

It can only be considered slander if it is not true.

Although harping on the past in this instance is in bad taste it nevertheless is a valid bone of contention for some.

Despite the Minister’s rehabilitation and local accomplishments as a representative of the island abroad the sum total of his person will be scrutinized by those he meets.

Unfortunately that sum total will necessarily include his criminal past.

I will hazard a guess that there aren’t to many jurisdictions in the world where a person found guilty of a serious drug related offence will be elected to parliament and then given a ministerial portfolio where he it the face of the country’s tourism’s product.

However Bermuda is another world especially when it comes to partisan local politics

      • Raymond Ray says:

“You’ve hit the nail upon the head” as far as one paying their debts yet I am a bit curious as to why go waaaaay out there to promote Bermuda when much closer we have the USA & Canada…?

        • js says:

          no surprises here

if Bermuda had a stop list like the US and Canada we would be a more discerning people

  4. A joke says:

Why oh why are we promoting Bermuda in Italy?? USA/Canada I understand…short and relatively cheap flight, but why promote in Europe? Flying from across the pond is far too expensive, especially with the Mediterrean so much closer. Really the motto here is “Bermuda, so much more further away”

  5. J Starling says:

I actually don’t have a problem with promoting our tourism in Europe. There’s numerous studies (I understand) showing that European tourists tend to spend more, and so are in many ways ‘worth more’ than our core market of the US northeast and Canada.

But yeah, I do find it odd that the PLP were criticised for doing the same thing, often, I believe, by the Opposition of which Mr Crockwell was then a member of, in all its various manifestations.

    • Mad Dawg says:

Are you alking about the trips to China, India, Bahrain?

      • Clear View says:

China is a market we need to get into. They’re the most traveled people in the world and the biggest tourism spenders at $100bil last year. Even a tenth of a percent of that would be sweet here.

  6. Story Teller says:

I can’t wait till the day when the Tourism Authority comes into effect and limits political interference in promoting our tourism product.

The OBA stated it should take 6 months to have it established which seems t indicate mid-summer.

Can the Government please provide an update on the progress of the TA?

  7. Stop Complaining for 1 Second says:

Looks like someone is racking up his miles, since he will need them for all his travel outside of the USA once the OBA are no longer in power.

  8. Christine says:

I am a long time tourist since I was a child I have seen Bermuda in the 70′s 80′s through present Bermuda today. I have a deep love for Bermuda and get back several times a year. I am going to leave you all with this one thought, crazy as it may sound, instead of spending a fortune on could have, should have, would have, and arguing with each other what you need to do is make a task force with people who have seen Bermuda at it’s best. We the “tourist” have experience, insight and the ability to work with you to restore Bermuda to the place it used to be. Big results for a small investment.

    • js says:

if you are a long time tourist how would you know as you stated in an earlier post that the minister is a brilliant man.

that’s not an insight that a tourist would know however long time.

it would appear that you are more than likely a resident like the rest of us

there are far to many duplicitous people on the island each with their own little agendas

    • Wrong! says:

LOLOLOLOLOL next time change the name before you come on here like some fake tourist lololololololololol.

  9. tell the truth says:

There are so many ways to Increase the Tourism Industry here in Bermuda,,First we must want to do so and Stop Play Politics, we Should Promote to the destinations that are Closer to Us for many Reasons, Today’s Traveller deceides his Trip on a last Min Bases Today, If We could Offer Better Lodging and Airfare Rates would be a Start, Improve on the Product Up Grade All the Hotels and Guess Acc. Offer Local based Entertainment, not Only in the Hotels but around the island, and to Promote bermuda as a Year Round destination,,ie, Medical Tourism,Sports,Spa,Golf, and Family Destination..

  10. Nuffin but da Truth says:

Italy was a complete waste of time Crockwell!

Promote in Canada, the USA and UK.

STOP all this flying around the World!

Start using the TV like the other islands to the south of Bermuda does.

    • James says:

Forget you haters, Minister Crockwell get them business trips in, jealous bunch of pigs.

  11. tell the truth says:

The Above Two have it Right the Minister Should Minimize his far away travel and focus on and Promote in the US and Canada,,But Mostly Listen to The Tourist Especially the Ones who are our Return Visitors,,Ms. Christine I would Suggest you make Contact with Our Minister and Share some of Your Ideas of how we Could work with You to Improve Our Tourist Product.

    • Christine says:

I would love to work with Bermuda to improve it’s tourism product. I feel that I have the knowledge and the heart to make a difference and I have the listening ear of many Bostonian’s who are right on your doorstep.

  12. Question says:

I appreciate the coverage. It is refreshing to hear what happened.

  13. mixitup says:

Triangle Drifter “What! No running off to Africa, South America, China, Arab states, India, Antarctica or some other place where we don’t have a hope of getting a visitor from anymore?”

On the brightside, he didn’t mention italy.
    How those words taste TD?

  14. markus says:

Nothing like advertising tourism for a country that is struggling to stay afloat

  15. Encyclopedia says:

How much was spent last year in promoting tourists from Italy and how many from Italy came to Bermuda? Those numbers would be useful to have, to judge if spending Tourism dollars in Italy is a wise thing to do.

I see comments such as “We need to get the rich to spend some money here” in various blogs. The rich did not get rich by being stupid. What does Bermuda have for the rich to spend money on? Introspection time!!!!

I also see comments such as “We need to fish where the fish are”. My response is You have been fishing in the same pond for ages and it is tie you find some new places to fish.

  16. Rhonda Neil says:

when does the tourism numbers come out…and will the list of trips by the Minister included in the article , as it was in the past…

  17. new hope says:

I don’t see anything wrong with marketing bermuda in as many places as possible. While it is probably more fiscally responsible to spend more on places that are closer, ie canada and usa, getting more bang for our buck, I really do not see anything wrong with promoting the island in Italy. The more coverage the better. Let’s get our name out to the wolrd as a top travel destination and show them the beauty we have to offer.

  18. Scribe318 says:

Maybe he and his department should consider sponsoring the “Bermuda Day event held annually in London. This event attracted over 2,000 people last year …. I was there!
12hr of BERMUDA! Food, drink, live music and more! Fantastic. Over 400 Bermudians!

Surely this would be money well spent…

    https://m.facebook.com/events/298281096921646/?mall_view=posts&refsrc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2Fsearch&refid=9&_rdr#!/events/554928947871934?ref=m_notif&notif_t=plan_mall_activity&__user=570801053

    • bdaabroad says:

But Scribe, what is the point of sponsoring an avent attended by Bermudians? We need to spend that money on POTENTIAL VISITORS, not transplanted Bermudians. If anything, invite past visitors and offer tehm incentives to return and bring friends.

  19. Scribe318 says:

    @bdaabroad Wow! Transplanted Bermudians!

Well 1st if there are over 2,000 people and 400 are Bermudian then that leaves…….. How many English, Europens and others?

Obviously you didn’t read everything written or follow the link?

Well this event is one of..if not the biggest Bermudian event held outside of Bermuda… With people coming to enjoy a taste of Bermuda, an event that has the best ambassadors for Bermuda…Bermudians!

Now this isn’t all about a big piss up! This is about celebrating Bermuda’s culture, history, arts and more….an event that will hopefully continue to grow!

But the reason Tourism and others should get behind this is because this will have more impact in promoting Bermuda….instead of “Come to Bermuda” ads posted in the side of busses…which I can assure you, had little or no impact at all! Or flying one Gombey to London! The list of project that money has been wasted on by successive administrations is endless!

I’m sure the organisers of Bermuda Day In London would appreciate only a fraction of the money being spent on project that fail to do exactly what this event achieves…highlight Bermuda and all her wonder to a captive audience!

  20. Whistling Frog says:

You want tourist to come here in the droves? Legalize marijuana for personal use. And you’d the Amsterdam of the Atlantic. The whole world would know where Bermuda is located… Government taxes the revenue from the proceeds and with that jobs are created. Simple..

  21. Tony Brannon says:

YOKO ONO reached 4,155,400 people via her TWITTER post about LENNON BERMUDA….. AMAZING

It’s time the BDOT saw more value in this amazing relationship for LENNON and his connection to Bermuda – the worldwide press and PR we are generating !
    https://twitter.com/yokoono
    Yoko’s tweet reads:
    Yoko Ono ‏@yokoono
Preorder Lennon Bermuda on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/album/lennon-bermuda/id646386508?ls=1 … Out 20th May. More info at http://doublefantasybermuda.com/home.html

  22. Tony Brannon says:

BERMUDA needs to address RESORT GAMING….
I totally concur with PLP leader MARC BEAN but not on the method.
TRUTH be told, the fact that the politicians are incapable of coming together to pass RESORT GAMING legislation, relegating responsibility to “MAKE IT HAPPEN” under the pathetic excuse of a referendum, is Political cowardice in my view.
There is enough support on both sides of the aisle to get this done!
If the PLP and OBA truly cared about the success of Bermuda Tourism, and the economic wellbeing of the Bermuda Hotels, they would have this done by now……YET we are another day, month, year along with this issue now being thrown out for the “PEOPLE to DECIDE”. In my view this is political cowardice by our MEMBERS of PARLIAMENT – SHAME ON YOU.
