Town Hall Meetings To Discuss Municipalities

May 14, 2013

The Ministry of Home Affairs is reminding the public that it will host two town hall meetings this Friday, May 17 and next Monday, May 20 to discuss Municipalities Reform.

Friday’s meeting will be held at the Wesley Methodist Church, Hamilton at 5.30 p.m. and next Monday’s forum will be held at Pennos Wharf, St George’s at 7.00 p.m.

The Minister of Home Affairs Sen. Michael Fahy said today [May 14], “The public will be aware that the Ministry has commenced a Municipalities Reform Review. While a great deal of work was already completed as part of the 2010 reform process, our goal is to update the current data and garner additional views to assist us as we take the next steps forward in this process.”

Minister Fahy added, “The Municipalities have been chartered for decades under the existing structures while our Island has experienced significant and profound political, social, cultural, economic and infrastructure development.

“Until 2011, there hadn’t been any amendments to the Municipality Act since 1923. And in an effort to improve efficiency and effectiveness as well as increase oversight in accordance with the principles of good governance we must explore new options.”

Also expected to be part of the conversation will be the consideration the introduction of a business vote to complement the existing the residential vote. In fact, the Minister confirmed that discussions with the Parliamentary Registrar on this matter have commenced.

Minister Fahy said, “Ultimately, we are committed to gathering much valued input from the stakeholders and the public, and ultimately recommend a modernised governance structure that will serve Bermuda’s needs now and in the future.

“The Ministry is keen to talk to relevant stakeholders of the Corporations as well as to representatives within their organizations to gather information, views and opinions with respect to the review.

“However, I am encouraging feedback from the public at our Town Hall meetings this Friday and next Monday as I very much look forward to hearing and discussing their views.”

  1. Just a cute way of saying that they (O.B.A) have a plan to get rid of the Municipalities, but dont want it to be to obvisious since the P.L.P failed to do it.remember they (O.B.A)is not just looking for ways to reduce government spending but also looking for ways to increase governments bank accounts.

So taking over the two Municipalities would be a good pick at this point, they need to get money quick because the day is coming were the International sector will have no other choice but to pack up and leave because Uncle Sam cant keeping going the route it has all these years.

So if anything I hope we start looking toward a new way to promote Bermudas Tourism product and other resources that may bring us what we need to live a balance life in this country,I think these guys dont like doing business with dem byes in city hall cause who they are and if some of their folk get back in the hall, they might leave dem alone.

Then they might take back de name of the theatre from being The Earl Cameron Theatre and change it to De Margaret Thatcher De AT Her.

  3. Chuckling says:

Come now Fahy. Meetings a formality..decisions have already been made ….papers drafted . The vote previously given to all residents WILL be nullified and back to 1955 voting we go. Gonna be interesting to see how much push back there is from the now Ex UBP now OBA support block who jumped up and down and screamed anytime Ewart Brown mentioned the word Municipality. More to come folks just wait and see.

      You are wrong!
They will return the vote to the landowners/tenanats and the residents will also
      be able to vote.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

You are kidding right???? Public input at a public meeting???? This can’t be true. Who would have thought? Governance in the sunshine of public scrutiny. Say it isn’t so!!!

  5. Bermuda Boy says:

No reform needed. Abandom the Municipalities, those ares should be treated like any other part of Bermuda. The Island is too small for these types of things. Too bad Outerbridge, you can go home now!

  6. Bobmarlin says:

Give all who pay taxes, the right to vote!
