Video: Dolphins Escort Yacht Leaving Bermuda

May 27, 2013

Sailors delivering a yacht from Bermuda to Rhode Island were accompanied part of the way across the Atlantic by playful dolphins.

In a video recently posted at YouTube, the uploader “rdunncpa” said, “On our delivery of an Oyster 53 from Bermuda to Newport we had an escort of bottlenose dolphins. These two swam the bow wake for a long time!”

Bow riding is a behavior most closely associated with dolphins. The marine mammals enjoy riding waves and frequently surf the bow waves of boats. The animals are pushed along by the bow wave and often weave in and out in groups trying to get the best position for the best ride.

See, Who needs DolphinQuest when you have the REAL deal in our ocean!!! People who can afford to come to Bermuda should be able to afford to go and see dolphins in the wild if they want to see a dolphin that much! It is a huge disservice to our island and our ocean to keep dolphins captive in such a small area and yet so close to the ocean. Sad.

You can quite literally SEE the dolphins’ intelligence when they play in the bow wave. I have watched them race away from the boat, then come zooming back across the bow at maximum speed, as if to show off to their mates. It looks like water skiers playing in the wake. They are clearly just playing, and if that doesn’t make you feel that we have much in common with them, then you’re not as intelligent as they are. Amazing creatures.
