Twenty Eight Young People Receive Gold Awards

June 27, 2013

On Tuesday [June 25], 28 young people were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award by Governor George Fergusson at Government House.

The Gold Award is the highest level of the Award Programme and for a participant to complete their Gold Award they must commit to either a minimum of 12 months of Community Service, 12 months of Physical Recreation and 12 months of learning a Skill.

It culminates with the participant having to complete an Adventurous Journey overseas and a Residential Project. Those awarded their Gold Award completed their Adventurous Journey in either the Forest of Odes, Germany or sailed through The Bahamas Islands of Grand Bahamas, Abaco and Eleuthera.

The other route one might take is if they are what is a called a Direct Entrant, meaning they never completed the Bronze or Silver Award and came directly into the Programme at the Gold level. They would complete everything as previously stated, but at the end of twelve month minimum period, the participant would have to commit to a further 6 months of community service or physical recreation or learning a skill.

Governor Fergusson said, “The short statements made at the ceremony about the Award winners’ contributions are only the tip of a much bigger iceberg of work and effort. I am particularly struck by the community work element, which I hope has started a habit of contribution which will continue through people’s lives.”
