Man Admits Stealing $13 Bottle Of Wine

June 13, 2013

A 23-year-old man who was already on probation for a previous offence appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [June 13] where he admitted stealing a $13 bottle of wine from Bermuda Wines and Spirits in March 2013.

The Front Street store’s CCTV system recorded that Lonicko Burgess- Durrant had taken the bottle, which also happened to be the last bottle of that label, and concealed it on his person.

The store manager called police who later arrested Durrant-Burgess a week later, and he admitted taking the wine.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report and granted Durrant-Bugess bail of $1,000. He must return to Court for sentencing on 29 July.

The courts and government will profit from BW&S misfortune by extracting a fine from this criminal and we the public will have to care for him at Westgate. Meanwhile, BW&S will have to absorb the loss and pass it onto we the public!

Why can’t these criminals be made to pay, to the merchant the same way we naturally do? Why is it the courts get to profit from everyone’s misfortune?

I agree with you James…Bare minimum, do “public services” as oppose to being sent to, H.M.P. Westgate at the taxpayers expense. Take him out to retrieve bottles and cans from out of the bush…But of course there is the fact he’d violated his probation also :-(
