Quarry Issue Heads To Labour Disputes Tribunal

June 15, 2013

Following workers downing tools earlier this week at the Government Quarry, Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy has referred the dispute to the Labour Disputes Tribunal.

A statement said, “After meeting with both parties, the Minister has determined pursuant to Section 4 of the Labour Disputes Act 1992, that a labour dispute exists between the Ministry of Public Works, Department of Works & Engineering and the Department of Works & Engineering Division of the Bermuda Industrial Union.

“Accordingly the Minister has referred the said dispute for settlement to the Labour Disputes Tribunal.”

Earlier this week approximately 75% of the workforce at the Government Quarry downed tools in support of a colleague was suspended for the unauthorized use of a Government vehicle.

  2. Nicole says:

A just cause to eliminate government jobs. The BIU and Chris Furbert gives me heartburn.

  3. Y-Gurl says:

Can’t fire them, Works and Engineering is the dumping ground for Bermudas unemployed or unemployable, we need to remember most of these clowns never made it through high school, this is what keeps the unemployment figures artificially low and helps keeps the economy artificially higher and swells the union ranks by a few thousand, it’s like a social program which costs us a fortune with little or no quality work for our tax money, they will abuse vehicles the same way they abuse the fact they work an hour or two a day but always get paid for a full week surely that’s a bigger injustice to us who pays tax and the crazy part is EVERYONE knows it, we see it on a daily basis.

    • concern says:

@Y-Gurl, is it really fair to paint all of W&E with the same brush. There are many educated and qualified persons that work for W&E that have a college education and or a degree.

Yes i’m sure some of them could work more efficiently. However this issue stemmed from a worker taking a vehicle home without permission.

How many times do we see GP cars at grocery stores on Sunday’s, or various public servants dropping off their children at private school? There is a major abuse of the government’s vehicles from all sectors of government.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Yes there are people who are exceptions, but Government & the Civil Service in general IS the dumping ground for the unemployable. Look at how many it takes to get so little done & how long it takes to get it done.

Pick a department. Any department. W&E happens to be one of the most visible because they are out on the street waving to their friends going by.

        • Maddog says:

Do you mean a dumping groung for black people…. Watch what you say

  4. argosy says:

    Huh?
Good luck with that. The BIU will simply not abide by the ruling of this or any other Tribunal. The BIU make their own rules and who can blame them? They get away with it every time and this Gov’t has no more T Fortitude than any one previously.
    Bermuda needs a Maggie T!

  5. Building a better Bermuda says:

How is it the BIU considers his punishment unfair, did they not take issue when the punishment was posted on letterhead. The member knew the punishment, but still committed the offense, well done to management for following through, and shame to the BIU for dragging this country down again needlessly.
