27-Year-Old Man Jailed For Machete Attack

July 11, 2013

In Supreme Court this morning [July 11], Justice Hellman sentenced Ahijah Dill to seven years and nine months in prison after he was convicted of attacking another man with a machete and leaving his arm “dangling.”

This followed Dill’s conviction for wounding and causing grievous bodily harm, having a bladed article in a public place and in an Increased Penalty Zone, and intimidating a witness.

The Crown Prosecutor told Justice Hellman that in January 2012, Dill had approached the victim and asked for a cigarette and a match. The victim had told Dill to “F*** off.” Dill had then gone away and returned armed with a machete.

Dill had then chopped the man in the back of his head, back and in other places. He had chopped the man’s arm to the point it was described as almost “hanging off.” KEMH staff managed to reconnect the muscle and restore some mobility and use to the arm.

The Prosecutor also told Justice Hellman that Dill had subsequently met and said to the victim: “If you don’t drop the charges, next time I’ll kill you.”

Dill was unrepresented at his trial and was unrepresented at this sentencing hearing. Given the opportunity to speak, Dill denied his guilt and asked for an appeal. Later, when asked if he had anything to say in final mitigation, Dill replied: “I already said what I had to say.”

In his sentencing statement, Justice Hellman noted that Dill had a history of violence and that his Social and Psychiatric reports indicated the possibility of schizophrenia. The Justice also noted that Dill had not fully cooperated when report writers sought to assess him.

The full sentence handed down was five years for wounding and seven years for having the bladed article which were to run concurrently. Nine months in prison was handed down for witness intimidation and this sentence was to run consecutive to the first.

On being sentenced, Dill, 27, could be heard exclaiming saying: “Seven years for a f***** machete?” and he also said what sounded like: “F**** judge….”

one of the more ridiculous sentences ever passed, the lack of respect for the judiciary and contempt of court should be 7 years on its own , intimidation of a witness even more, and the crime itself.

More time for having a bladed article than for wounding a person.

  5. YADON says:

Where is the justice for the victim who will live with his injuries for life . This sort of weak sentence encourages vigilante justice.

This jack a$$ should have been sent away to a real prison!

      Is Westgate a fake prison?

      • Tired says:

Yes it is a fake prison. Look at all eveything they get to have. They have it way easier in prison, than out on the street. Free meals, free education, freshly baked breads everyday. Some of the prisoners run that prison.

The bad elements are destroying the Bermuda that we know and love. It also seems that the law and judges, by their lack of judgement, keep the bad elements in circulation.

We need to let whosoever know that foolishness is never tolerated. Otherwise, we need to move and let the fools run the land. Let the world know that Bermuda is not friendly or open for business.

Trash, if you like trash. Hopefully, up Vassgay he’ll get ruled by a huge guy called Bubba, or Big Vern!

  9. Honesty says:

Bernews I’m confused. The opening sentence says, “sentenced Ahijah Dill to seven years and nine months” and the closing says, “full sentence handed down was five years for wounding and seven years for having the bladed article” so then that’s 12 years total he has to serve + the additional 9 months? or just the 7? in which case Mr. Dill should be shouting 12 years for a machete, not 7.

    • Bernews says:

He technically got 5 years for wounding and 7 years for having the bladed article, however they are to run concurrently…meaning he serves them both at the same time.

So in actual practice that sentence is 7 years.

Then he got 9 months on the witness charge, which does not run concurrently. So it’s a total sentence of 7 years 9 months

  10. shame says:

What your dumb the sentences are to run concurent which means he has 7 Years and the nine months runs consecutive which means he does the 9 months as well,,,,,,,, 7 years and 9 months

  11. Grand Wizzard says:

I knew him and others like him, bunch of worthless animals. no surprise he did this. ive seen him hurt lots of people. animals like him should be exterminated.

  12. Tired says:

He should have been charged with attempted murder. He left and then came back with the machete. The poor victim has to suffer for the rest of his life. Why should the prisoner get any less. And he should have been sentenced seperately, as he left and came back. Two seperate offenses. He should be doing 12 years. We need to change these laws, and soon. If you want someone in jail for 7 years you need to give them 21 years, or get rid of the “time off for good behaviour.”

  13. Grand Wizzard says:

they should chop his arms off, the stinking animal

  14. Wat says:

Did I read that wrong? Seven years? I hope that was a typo and it’s really seventy.

  15. sounds legit says:

concurrent sentences ….. stupidest thing I have ever heard of! This idiot should serve every second of BOTH sentences consecutively, NOT concurrently. The justice system here needs an upgrade I think.
