City Of Hamilton To Launch Wi-Fi Today

July 1, 2013

[Updated] The City of Hamilton announced it will formally launch the City Wi-Fi service today [July 1].

Mayor of Hamilton Graeme Outerbridge stated, “The City Wi-Fi services is available throughout Hamilton, providing visitors and residents with high speed internet access. This service is the result of a joint venture with TeleBermuda International Limited [TBi].

“As many may recall, last spring when we introduced the City Wi-Fi service we provided it free of charge to Bermuda residents and visitors. Since last year, we have received a lot of great feedback from users of the service.

“We are now ready to move to the next step where residents and visitors alike can use the WiFi service in and around Hamilton at their convenience while visiting, working, shopping or dining in the city.”

TBi President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Gregory Swan added, “TBi is pleased to have had the opportunity to partner with the City on this project. City Wi-Fi has become an integral part of the TBi’s WiFiZone network rollout.”

Mayor Outerbridge concluded, “Anyone who wants to use City Wi-Fi can subscribe to the service for daily, weekly or monthly access. Access cards are available from the City of Hamilton’s administration offices or from our Wi-Fi service partners, TBi.”

Update 11.05am: The rates are

  • 1 hour- $3.00
  • 24 hrs- $9.99

  2. Royalty says:

    well that’s nice…
how far does the zone stretch?

  3. Yup yup says:

Access cards? You mean I have to visit your shop every month to use this free wifi?? Surely you can just leave it open to access or at least put the password on your website? Are tourists going to have a clue how to find the password or will it be like a treasure hunt for them?

    • Get a grip says:

I don’t think this is free. It was offered free last year but now needs to be subscribed too. See TBI for their rates. $29.99 per month.

      • Yup yup says:

What a joke! I was in Cayman recently and had free wifi in every establishment I went into! Most didn’t even need passwords! Tourists will not be impressed with this!

        • Sandy Bottom says:

There’s free wifi in many establishments here. What’s the difference?

  4. Blind Pews says:

    If there’s a subscription, it doesn’t sound like it’s free…

  5. pebblebeach says:

Oh come on…make the darn wifi in the city of Hamilton free….

  6. STINGY MF'S says:

  8. jonny says:

ppl, its designed for visitors and those that may want internet access sparingly for those in the city. Its not intended for everyday users although they do have the option of a monthly plan. Its a hotspot, you pay online and receive access for the day or whatever plan u select.

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

Typical Bermuda. The price is 2-3 times what you pay for the same service elsewhere.

    • Insider says:

Guys… EVERYONE at the COH wanted this service to be free. The loudest advocate was Greame, However the current administration inherited this deal from the previous administration. Greame had to stop fighting when he found that a 5 year agreement with TBI had been singed sealed and delivered, and ALL money collected to go TBI. So… Greame ain’t the one to shout at on this one.

      • Terry says:

        Define “previous administration”.
I take it you mean Corporation and not Government.

  10. Umm.... says:

Maybe I just don’t get it but I don’t find WiFi very useful, even when I’m traveling. Only when I’m in an airport or my hotel do I hop on WiFi. I’m not that person that pulls out their tablet at a restaurant just because it has free WiFi. But I’m sure those who use social media a lot would find this service useful.

I’m curious to know how many local would pay for WiFi access in the city.

  11. douglas says:

they should be ashamed of himself everywhere else in the world it’s free.this is just another way for TBi to earn more money

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Can you list a few cities where WiFi in public places is free? I’ve never ever seen it. But maybe you visit strange exotic places.

      • douglas says:

obviously you haven’t walk around Hamilton there’s a lot of places broadcast wifi that you can log into

        • Sandy Bottom says:

Aren’t you arguing against yourself, if wifi is already free all over Hamilton?

  12. Always Watching says:

you guys suck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fee wifi please !!!

  13. Charter says:

“this is just another way for TBi to earn more money”
Umm yes. What’s wrong with that? Fact is, TBI are the only telecom really pressing to lower prices these days, so they get my stamp of approval.

  14. Stop Complaining for 1 Second says:

For ALL you ppl stating that it should be FREE, please name a City that when you are walking around has FREE WiFi.

What i do remember is that Businesses offer free WiFi for any customer within their premises, especially Fast Food Restaurants.

I just spent 3 months in Boston, and to USE the City Wifi called BlueStrek for anyone who wishes to look it up, comes with a price.

So STOP blowing steam, you bunch of cheap ARSE ppl

  15. Stop Complaining for 1 Second says:

I forgot, why not ask the OWNERS of the shops you browsing whilst walking through the city, to remove the security from their WiFi so that you can piggyback off their PAID WiFi service.
I am sure ASCoopers, Colonial, Gapital G ( All The Gibbons Stores )Brown N Co even Washington Mall can afford to offer free WiFi for ppl that so desperately need WiFi.

  16. Malachi says:

I use TBI as my internet service provider. As a customer of TBI, I get free internet service via wifi wherever it is available, i.e., the City of Hamilton, Dockyard, Country Squire, and various other locations.

The price is competitive and the free wifi benefit unrivalled!

To those complaing about cost,, why should it be free? Isn’t TBI a business?

Next you’ll want free phone service and free cable!

    Get real.

  17. Rick Olson says:

Most restaurants have free wifi or they are losing customers and great lunch specials too !

  18. Come On Man says:

More rip-off BS I’ve been to many city’s where WiFi is free only in Bermuda you pay and out of your a$$

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Name a few cities where in public places you get wifi provided by the city free of charge. Give us the names of a few, since you’ve been to many cities where it’s free.

        • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Er, yeah. You prove my point actually. Most of these are lists of privately provided free wifi spots. Look, for example, at Lakeland FL. It lists availability of free wifi at: Bob Evan’s Restaurant, Starbucks, McDonald’s, and other places.

Middletown CT: Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald’s.

I am not sure whether or not you see the difference. People here are complaining that free wifi is not being given by the City of Hamilton. The point is that it is rare for a city to provide free wifi. There are lots of example of free wifi being provided by private businesses (hotels, restaurants, coffee shops). But it is not common for cities to provide free wifi.

You pointed out Santa Clara, which as far as I can tell is the one exception.

  20. BermudaGirl says:

Last year you provided free wifi and it was a big hit. What makes you think paid wifi will have the same impact? Hello? Anybody home?
